ABC certainly needs new shows that are a hit in the ratings. They didn’t have much luck last season. Will this year be different or will much of their new crop of TV shows be cancelled as well?
There’s lots of data that network execs looks at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are the major ingredient. These charts will be updated daily, as new ratings data becomes available.
ABC shows (so far): 20/20, 500 Questions, America’s Funniest Home Videos, American Crime, The Astronaut Wives Club, The Bachelor, Bachelor in Paradise, The Bachelorette, BattleBots, Black-ish, Boston EMS, Castle, Celebrity Family Feud, Celebrity Wife Swap, Cristela, Dancing with the Stars, Extreme Weight Loss, Forever, Fresh Off The Boat, Galavant, The Goldbergs, The Great Christmas Light Fight, Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, In An Instant, Last Man Standing, Manhattan Love Story, Marvel’s Agent Carter, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, The Middle, Mistresses, Modern Family, Nashville, Once Upon a Time, Primetime: What Would You Do?, Repeat After Me, Resurrection, Revenge, Rookie Blue, Save My Life: Boston Trauma, Scandal, Secrets and Lies, Selfie, Shark Tank, The Taste, and The Whispers.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also view them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking.
The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
Note: Due to Nielsen reportings glitch, some ratings for Modern Family, SHIELD, Once Upon a Time, Nashville, and Revenge have been adjusted downward. Nielsen has only released restated numbers for the first week of the season (9/22-9/28/14) so far.
What do you think? Are you surprised by any of the ratings? Which shows should be doing better? Which one do you think will be cancelled next?
BRING BACK FOREVER! I do not know how you can take off a show that inventive. Please reconsider
I love Forever and I can’t believe it got cancelled when stupid reality shows are still getting renewed! I hope Forever gets picked up by another network. It deserves a second chance!!! It’s got followers here in Europe too you know!
the network is basically based on ratings you figure people take time to watch these programs. Well I think you need to look how many people have taken the time to sit down to write a note here to support keeping Forever on the network. That it is a wonderful show that is worth a 2nd chance. I actually think if you as a network had promoted it, it would done better with the ratings. I agree with what the others have said this is a feel good and clever show makes you think. It is not a nasty show… Read more »
I borrowed this from someone who was trying to save another show in previous season. I sent my letter yesterday – have no idea if it will be read, etc. but it is certainly as much as I can do to save a good show. 1. Mail (the most effective method) Mr. Paul Lee ABC Entertainment Group 500 S. Buena Vista Street Burbank, CA 91521-4588 Please send a hand-written (or typed and hand-signed) letter expressing your desire for more seasons of Forever. One letter sent through the mail to the network is worth thousands of emails. A polite, brief, well-written… Read more »
It really shows how far our society has fallen when they renew shows like The Bachelor and Shark Tank and get rid of quality shows like Forever. Do we really care more about watching people be miserable than a show that makes you think? It’s just like The Learning Channel is now all reality TV…really people?!
As usual . Anything that takes the least bit of thought gets cancelled while we pander to the usual reality shows and no brainier series. Stop pandering to the lowest common denominator please and renew Forever!
I do wish that “Forever” tv series will be renewed. If you need to cancel some shows to make room for the new ones, then I suggest you cancel the Bachelor and Bachelorette reality shows but not Forever!
Big pity about Forever. I loved watching that show. Now it’s gone and The Blacklist is between seasons there seems to be nothing to watch.
So disappointed that Forever was cancelled.. me and my wife love the show.. great chemistry between the actors and just about when the story is becoming more interesting.. i hope other network will pick up this show..
Absurd that Forever was cancelled before a few that were renewed. How many Marvel shields and scripted rrality ahows do we need? Of course it had to be my favorite show. Hopefully someone else will pick it up.
Let me add to the numbers of disappointed fans of Forever. My husband & I really enjoyed the show a lot. Its really disappointing that ABC puts all these STUPID SHOWS on & the decent ones are cancelled!!! Wake up ABC. Your public is telling you what they want. Start listening.
I loved Forever as well. It is my favorite of all shows cancelled. However ABC’s public clearly told them they did NOT want Forever and they did listen. That’s why it was cancelled. It was the second lowest rated drama they had. You cannot blame them for cancelling it. I am just grateful that they didn’t pull it midseason and let it run out to a satisfying conclusion. It could have been a lot worse.
Please renew Forever!!!!!
Disappointed that Forever was cancelled. My 20 something son and his friends watch this regularly as do I. Sick and tired of all the reality shows. If the stations don’t start renewing shows like Forever, they’re going to lose more viewers to Netflix, Hulu, and Apple TV. Change your mind, a bring back Forever!
I LOVED In Ann Instant. It was rivetting & kept me on the edge of my seat. I sure hope it continues. Not many times I recommend a show but I did for this show.
I can’t believe yall cancelled Forever! It was an Awesome show and was never dull. The chemistry was great with the actors. Yall need to reevaluate the system and promote great shows like this. so disappointed & I’m gunna re-evaluate my loyalty to this channel.
I hate that Forever has been cancelled. The story lines were great and the chemistry between the actors was fantastic. It seems like every time there is a show on that I really like they cancel it. They need to rethink their rating system….. my son and all the 18-20 somethings that he knows never even watch TV, if they want to watch something they all watch Netflix. The networks need to start paying more attention to the huge amount of baby boomers out there, they are the ones that watch TV and have a lot of purchase power, or… Read more »
Agreed they need to rethink of “cancell”in Forever. From all of these comments that keep coming in everyday in support it has to give the networks something to think about. Let’s keep Forever! !!!!
My wife and I agree with the comments concerning Forever. It’s a great show with great actors. It shouldn’t have been cancelled. We are also a part of the baby boomers generation and think ABC needs to reevaluate its cancellation policy before we decide to change stations.
To the writers of General Hospital who have dragged the story lines so bad & long. You should wake up because GH is now last and losing rapidly!!! It was REALLY STUPID to take out Duke, yet you still don’t get it. When are you finally going to let Sam know that her husband is alive & well?
My husband & I were so disappointed that Forever was cancelled. It’s one of the TV shows that we watched regularly!!!
I’m so disappointed that Forever was cancelled. It’s one of the tv shows that I watched.
