ABC certainly needs new shows that are a hit in the ratings. They didn’t have much luck last season. Will this year be different or will much of their new crop of TV shows be cancelled as well?
There’s lots of data that network execs looks at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are the major ingredient. These charts will be updated daily, as new ratings data becomes available.
ABC shows (so far): 20/20, 500 Questions, America’s Funniest Home Videos, American Crime, The Astronaut Wives Club, The Bachelor, Bachelor in Paradise, The Bachelorette, BattleBots, Black-ish, Boston EMS, Castle, Celebrity Family Feud, Celebrity Wife Swap, Cristela, Dancing with the Stars, Extreme Weight Loss, Forever, Fresh Off The Boat, Galavant, The Goldbergs, The Great Christmas Light Fight, Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, In An Instant, Last Man Standing, Manhattan Love Story, Marvel’s Agent Carter, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, The Middle, Mistresses, Modern Family, Nashville, Once Upon a Time, Primetime: What Would You Do?, Repeat After Me, Resurrection, Revenge, Rookie Blue, Save My Life: Boston Trauma, Scandal, Secrets and Lies, Selfie, Shark Tank, The Taste, and The Whispers.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also view them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking.
The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
Note: Due to Nielsen reportings glitch, some ratings for Modern Family, SHIELD, Once Upon a Time, Nashville, and Revenge have been adjusted downward. Nielsen has only released restated numbers for the first week of the season (9/22-9/28/14) so far.
What do you think? Are you surprised by any of the ratings? Which shows should be doing better? Which one do you think will be cancelled next?
My whole family loves the show Forever and if cancelled we would be very upset with ABC for not giving it more time to grow a bigger fan base as we are sure it would! An immortal Sherlock Holmes with charm, who would not love a show like that? At least a different time slot should be considered.
I totally agree. My wife and I love this show and its overall tenor. The scripts and the actors are first rate. The time-slot, however, is awful…ABC…please re-think and renew!
Galavant is by far the best show I have seen!! It was so refreshing and lovable. It is a timeless piece of art. 🙂 Please oh please keep it!!
Please keep forever going. Great show!!
I totally agree am addicted to the show
I can see the direction of the wind pointing to “Resurrection” cancellation, but I think there’s on sure way to save it, ABC is in love with all of Shonda Rhimes shows, so they should turn over script management to the Shonda Rhimes crew to give the scripts/storyline a needed boost to attract more viewers, then they should have ABC change the time-slot so it’s not up against “The Walking Dead”, in many parts of the country.
Please do not cancel NASHVILLE! I love this show! We have viewing parties every week, it’s a fun show, great music and story lines. Yes, to some degree there is the scent of Velveeta, but it’s a pleasing scent, and a little cheese is not a bad thing. Keeps the story line light! Can’t we all use a little light humor mixed with small doses of escapism?
With much thanks…CL
Please, please do NOT cancel RESURRECTION. We do not get to watch much TV as we are in the barn doing chores . We really enjoy watching RESURRECTION for its dramatic story line.
Please don’t cancel Revenge (on of only a handful of shows my husband and I watch together – Castle being another ) Please save Forever as well. It is such a great show, wonderful writing, cast, storylines. There is so much left to showcase there. We also enjoy Cristela. It is so funny.
Castle is a great TV show, and it would be fun for those faithful viewers to see Richard & Kate ‘S life go in a wonderful direction, ( maybe a baby Castlethat would be nice)
keep forever going a good family show
I need some help. I’ve seen comments of folks mentioning rating the shows, but I can’t find where to include my ratings of them.
From what I can see, all ABC show are candidates to cancellation.
I’m a fan of Resurrection — I can see the signs don’t point in the right direction, but I do hope you’ll give the show one more shot! It’s a fascinating study of fear and how people learn to master it (or not).
Please don’t cancel resurrection, I love this show, excellent writing great cast!!!!
I love Resurrection! I’d hate to see it canceled!
I have to agree I loved Resurrection as well and I really do not think that the show ratings are the least bit fair and do not see how they can possibly come up with them! Others that are decent are The Bachelor, Grey’s Anatomy, Mistresses, Castle, to name a few!
I dont care what show ressurection is up against it (WINS) hands down. I hope that abc doesnt cancel it. We look foward to Sunday nights.
I love Resurrection. I’m extremely surprised at the ratings. Most people I know really enjoy it. I so hope it’s not canceled. One of my very favorite shows. I look forward to seeing it every Sunday.
