ABC certainly needs new shows that are a hit in the ratings. They didn’t have much luck last season. Will this year be different or will much of their new crop of TV shows be cancelled as well?
There’s lots of data that network execs looks at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are the major ingredient. These charts will be updated daily, as new ratings data becomes available.
ABC shows (so far): 20/20, 500 Questions, America’s Funniest Home Videos, American Crime, The Astronaut Wives Club, The Bachelor, Bachelor in Paradise, The Bachelorette, BattleBots, Black-ish, Boston EMS, Castle, Celebrity Family Feud, Celebrity Wife Swap, Cristela, Dancing with the Stars, Extreme Weight Loss, Forever, Fresh Off The Boat, Galavant, The Goldbergs, The Great Christmas Light Fight, Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, In An Instant, Last Man Standing, Manhattan Love Story, Marvel’s Agent Carter, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, The Middle, Mistresses, Modern Family, Nashville, Once Upon a Time, Primetime: What Would You Do?, Repeat After Me, Resurrection, Revenge, Rookie Blue, Save My Life: Boston Trauma, Scandal, Secrets and Lies, Selfie, Shark Tank, The Taste, and The Whispers.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also view them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking.
The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
Note: Due to Nielsen reportings glitch, some ratings for Modern Family, SHIELD, Once Upon a Time, Nashville, and Revenge have been adjusted downward. Nielsen has only released restated numbers for the first week of the season (9/22-9/28/14) so far.
What do you think? Are you surprised by any of the ratings? Which shows should be doing better? Which one do you think will be cancelled next?
Nashville is a great show. The cast, the music and the stories keep everyone loving or hating the characters. Last season was a little frustrating. It seemed like nothing good happened and you left feeling frustrated. I thing the changes with Reyna and Juliette have inspired the story again. Everyone I know loves and cheers on Deacon. The chemistry with Reyna and Deacon has been going on for so long I hate to see the show end now!!!! The girls are adorable and talented to watch. I may not fit the “thru 49 age demographic” but the show is decent.… Read more »
Are these #’s only counting viewers who watch the show at the time it’s showing? I mean so many ppl watch these shows but they just can’t watch it in the specific time it’s showing. I DVR everything to watch them when it’s most convenient for me. If this has nothing to do with the ratings .. then .. please don’t cancel Once Upon A time .. it’s just starting to get good again. lol
I have a friend that retired from CBS two years ago I asked him about if they knew shows that being watched or copied on DVR he told me that is the same as you’re watching it on a different as when you play back it does not count that but if you’re copying it will count.
I blame ABC for Forever’s low ratings.. They never gave it a starting chance.. First they put it in a dead time slot that’s also in direct competition with Person of Interest, which for a new show, was damning it. They’ve also given it very little to NO marketing.. Forever is a great show, and unfortunately i’ll have only one season of it, because ABC didn’t have the balls to give it a fair chance..
I don’t know I think forever had just as much marketing as any of the others I will say it is in a bad timeslot but so is couple of their rating is pretty low and is going be a tossup if they renew forever ABC has a lot of shows that got ratings. For one agent of the shield I thought was dead last season so I think we’ll just have to wait and see if they renew forever.
I HOPE YOU RENEW FOREVER FOR IT IS A GENUINE GEM OF A SERIES. THE CAST ARE AMAZING, &THE WHOLE IDEA OF SRIES IS GREAT.PLEASE LET HENERY MORGAN LIVE ON!!!!
The ratings are pretty bad doubtful they renew forever ABC should wipe their board clean and start over all of their shows are dropping out of sight on the rating department but probably won’t know until May
Forever has potential for a 10 year run. Awesome cast. Awesome story, not even scratched surface.
I stayed away from abc for over 5 years and gave it a chance with resurrection, forever and last man standing. Com’on, make the right choices.
Forever has the potential
I see no potential the storyline changes too many times.
In an instant. What a name for a 1/2-hour show that is 2 hours long! Unbelievable!!!
I will N-E-V-E-R watch this show again. My first and last time. Way too many commercials, followed by a long re-cap after each ad. It was like watching grass grow!
I definitely agree with you.
OUAT numbers are seriously artificially inflated by Frozen. It’s a train wreck dying a slow, agonizing death.
Forever needs to be renewed. It’s the best new show this season. Funny, intriguing, full of heart, and sexy too. House wasn’t an instant hit. Give Forever a second season.
House wasn’t an instant hit but it did do well for FOX. Forever is a straight up fail
ABC will most likely cancel Forever, there’s no ratings, Forever has no reasons to be renewed with such bad ratings, they count demo numbers, not viewers, they can’t renew a show just because 10 people or so beg, they have to have demo numbers to make $, if they don’t make $, they won’t keep a show with a low demographic, what did you expect Forever to last Forever?
Forever is also produced by Warner Brothers, not by ABC Studios, so there’s also no incentive in keeping it alive for future profits from syndication.
SECRETS AND LIES: Just watched for the last time. Script is awful. Juliette Lewis could not act her way out of a paper bag. Ryan Phillippe day is just as bad. Terrible show! Total waste of my time. Thanks.
I agree on that secret and lies it is a terrible show.
You hit that right on the nose it is a bad script bad script and there’s a couple more I think the same way that is American crimes and Marvel agent of shield I don’t know what you’re supposed to protect but taking protect themselves bad script.
Forever is the best show on tv and it hasn’t even begun to tell its story. If they cancel it now they will be missing a fantastic opportunity to build a show that could last for several years. The fans for this show span the globe and to cancel a show that is watched in many different countries would be ridiculous. Renew Forever. You won’t be sorry!
I used to agree with you forever was one of the best shows but now they’re just doing like a lot of others did the writers just cannot leave things alone.
Do NOT cancel FOREVER,RESURRECTION or Once Upon A Timd, havebeen followimg Forever, Also Revenge, alssome show!! ABC can cancels alot of sbows we neverve get good conclusionz for, STOP IT!
Totally agree. Thank you!!
“Forever” is one of the most amazing and fun watching shows, if they cancel it they are blind. Another great show that unfortunately and unbelievably got cancelled was “almost human”
Dear ABC Television Network. Please Cancel The Middle Because All Of The Episodes Are The Same Either The Creator Is Starting To Run Out Of Writing Ideas Or The Cast Is Getting Tired Of Working Successfully I See Too Many Programs Falling Downhill After A Long Time Those Are The Bad Ones Later Such As Last Man Standing Etc! & So Forth
Just becasue you do not like The Middle doesn’t mean it should be cancelled.
Nashville is a great show, I look forward to it when ABC decides to put it on. It seems to get booted all the time. Why don’t you pick on another show. There are plenty of them. If Nashville gets canceled it will be a huge mistake.
You are right about one thing it is a pretty good show I don’t watch very much, but it still pretty good show it is a clean show, but they go by what the 18 through 49 and the problem with Nashville is it does not have sex in it for that age group
Forever is one of the best shows on TV. Definitely needs a second season. Hollywood needs to stop canceling the great shows while leaving the crappy ones on.
