What’s This TV Show About?
An Americana fantasy drama series on the Starz premium cable channel, American Gods stars Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Emily Browning, Pablo Schreiber, Yetide Badaki, Bruce Langley, Crispin Glover, Orlando Jones, Gillian Anderson, Kristin Chenoweth, Jonathan Tucker, Cloris Leachman, Peter Stormare, Chris Obi, Demore Barnes, Corbin Bernsen, and Mousa Kraish.
Finally free after completing his prison sentence, when Shadow Moon (Whittle) first encounters Mr. Wednesday, a storm blows in — one that will completely change his life. Unmoored by the death of his wife, Laura (Browning), Shadow signs on as Mr. Wednesday’s (McShane) bodyguard. Doing so escorts him into a secret world where gods and magic are real. And there, the Old Gods are alarmed by the increasing potency of the New Gods.
Season One Ratings
The first season of American Gods averaged a 0.28 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 714,000 viewers. Find out how American Gods stacks up against other Starz TV shows.
On May 11, 2017, American Gods was renewed for a second season which will debut March 10, 2019. On November 20th, the showrunners exited season two production (see Telly’s Take). Stay tuned for further updates.
Telly’s Take
About a week and a half before the premiere, news broke that two episodes were cut from season one. However, it turns out this was a creative decision (rather than one from Starz) based on both production values and the right place to break the story (i.e. with a cliffhanger).
In addition, this fantasy drama is a TV show adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s popular fantasy novel. That means American Gods kicked off with the benefits of a built-in audience as well as name recognition, when viewers are tabbing through the guide, looking for something to watch. Until we get some idea on how well this show is catching on, I’ll give you my “flying-blind” guess that American Gods will be renewed for a second season. However, if it tanks, I reserve the right to change my mind. In the meantime, I will keep a hungry eye on the ratings. Subscribe for free updates on any American Gods cancellation and renewal news.
