Despite being on Lifetime for less than a year, supernatural drama Blood Ties has developed an intensely devout following. Still, the last two episodes of the season were aired online only. Has the series been cancelled or will the vampire return for more adventures?
Blood Ties is a Canadian series that’s based on the books of fantasy author Tanya Huff. Set in Toronto, the series follows private investigator Vicki Nelson (Christina Cox) who left the police force when she began to lose her eyesight. She ends up partnering with mysterious Henry Fitzroy (Kyle Schmid) who turns out to be a 480-year-old vampire and the illegitimate son of Henry the VIII. The two slowly become attracted to one another, a situation complicated by Vicki’s relationship with her former partner, Mike Celluci (Dylan Neal).
The show premiered on March 11, 2007 on Lifetime Television in the U.S. and began airing several months later in Canada. While the first season of 13 episodes was still airing, Lifetime ordered a second season of nine more (the 22 episodes were actually originally produced as a single season). Lifetime had other programming scheduled for the summer months so the “second season” didn’t begin airing until October 12, 2007.
The show aired as part of Lifetime’s “Psy-Fridays” line-up, alongside Lisa Williams: Life Among the Dead and America’s Psychic Challenge. According to TV Guide, because the other two shows ran out of episodes, Lifetime opted to rework the night’s schedule and relegated the two remaining Blood Ties episodes to an online release.
Lifetime hasn’t officially cancelled the show but the “online exclusive” treatment is usually reserved for a series that’s finished. So, if Lifetime cancels the series, is that the end? Maybe, or maybe not.
There is already interest in continuing the series among Canadian broadcasters but a U.S. partner is likely needed to help with the financing. Without that backing, we could have a rerun of what happened to the Falcon Beach teen drama last year. When ABC Family decided against a third season, it wasn’t financially possible for Canada’s Global TV to pay for Beach on its own and the show was cancelled.
If a new U.S. channel is found, Blood Ties executive producer Randy Zalken says the series will certainly be back. He told Eonline, “The sets are still available — they’ve not been destroyed — our talent is very eager to come back, and our show runner, Peter Mohan, is standing by.”
Zalken doesn’t believe the ongoing writers strike would be standing in the way if Blood Ties were to get a season three greenlight. He said, “I don’t think the strike is going to hurt us, because Canadian writers are not hindered by the U.S. guild rules. So, we can be delivering new shows for the fall — I guess that’s more than a lot of [U.S.] producers are saying now.”
Nice as that sounds, Zalken may be underestimating the WGA support of Canadian writers. Blood Ties author Tanya Huff had been writing episode commentary for the Lifetime website but stopped in support of the writers strike. Blood Ties screenwriter Denis McGrath is a solid supporter of the WGA strike as well.
For now, we may have to wait until Lifetime makes a final choice to either cancel or to renew the series. Part of their decision may hinge on how well the Blood Ties reruns perform next month. The entire series will be rerun on weekend nights beginning Saturday, February 9th. Will the vampire series rise again? Stay tuned!
I love this movie. If there have a third season I want to watch it!
I am getting tired of not knowing the fate of the show that I have so long fighted for. I have know idea what lifetime is thinking. They obviously dont know what they are doing. What is the hold up. Either there is another season or not. Why do they keep leaving us hanging. It is a bunch of crap if you ask me. I feel that they are stupid if they dont renew the show. It is amazing , and so are the characters. RENEW BLOOD TIES. WE ARENT GOING ANYWHERE. THE FIGHT IS ON AND WE WILL NOT… Read more »
Found Blood ties after viewing a clip on you tube and have since bought the series on dvd. I didn’t see it on tv because i don’t have that channel but I just love it. I have always loved Vampires and Henry is just too gorgeous. I hope they make another series because it sort of left you hanging at the end of series 1/2
I love Blood Ties and have since the first season. It is way better than Buffy (even though, I’ve seen all of those) or Angel. I hope they bring it back on the air soon because I’m curious to see what happens to the characters. It’s a shame that Henry and Vicki didn’t hook up and they probably never will since Henry is moving to Vancouver and that Vicki chose Mike over Henry. But oh well, I’ll take Henry anytime….
I absolutley adore the show Blood Ties. It has the right amount of suspense and drama and also the sexual tension between all the characters. I think it would be a shame if it didn’t come back for a 3rd season. I have been watching all the old episodes over again and still find them enjoyable. The chemistry between all the characters is great and who wouldn’t want to watch Kyle Schmid every week on TV. He is amazing and I would also let him sink his teeth into me. I would consider boycotting Lifetime if they cancelled the show.… Read more »
I love the show and hope it comes back for another season. I am also hoping they show the final two episodes on tv soon. I can’t wait to see if Henry and Vicki finally hook up.

I hate this, there hasn’t been a good vampire show is sooo long and I finally find one that i love and then they cancel it. I hate this!!! I love this show and it’s soo good. Please don’t cancel it!!! What do we the fans have to do to keep a good vampire show on TV. They should atleast give the show three seasons it takes that long just to get a really good devoted fan base, but they keep canceling all the new vampire shows after one season, I gave up after the cancelled Blade I was never… Read more »
It has been a very long time since something on tv has caught my aptly caught my attention. I don’t watch tv much at all but someone told me about this show and I love it. I am very faithful about making sure that I am in front of the tv to watch it. I don’t think that it should be left the way it is. If only to make another season to end it. One reason I have stopped watching tv so much is because the shows that I watch end up getting cancelled and you are left wondering.… Read more »
Blood Ties is a great show with so many more stories to be told. The fact that the fan base is growing even though the show is not currently on U.S. TV says a lot about its potential. New fans are finding the show via word-of-mouth (or online message boards) and getting hooked by watching the online episodes or downloading to their ipods. A smart network would pick this show up fast before the cast, crew, and sets are unavailable.
This show is what made my week. I couldn’t wait until Fridays came and then I was glued to the TV till the very end. I was a fan of the book series long ago and when the show came out it did so well in keeping the spirit of the books it was the best show ever! Why would Lifetime even think of cancelling the one show that actually gets them viewers. If they base the show being canceled off of the ratings of the re-runs that is ridiculous especially when it wasn’t even on its main channel. I… Read more »
Thats the way it always goes…the good shows are always cancelled and the trash shows are always left on tv. They always want a show to do good and then when it does, builds a following they take it off and put crap up in its place. I wouldn’t have television now if someone paid me to have it after all the great things that were cancelled before they even had a chance to remain leaving us in limbo with the way they end it. If lifetime takes it off, that was the only thing they had going for them… Read more »
I simply love EVERYTHING about Blood Ties. The writing, the acting, the casting, the production, the storyline, the passion this show has and the passionate BT fans it has created. Blood Ties has become far more than just a TV show. It is a cult classic in the making, it has spawned friendships, created enemies and allies, transcended the TV screen and become integrated into the lives of it’s viewers. This series is consumes you, yet you simply can not get enough. If Lifetime does not renew this original series it will be a poor business decision that will alienate… Read more »
Bring Bloodties back on TV it’s one of the best shows. Will they put the first season on DVD available in the United States?
