For years, some people have been asking, “When is Smallville going to end? Isn’t he Superman yet?” Well, the series ending is now in sight. But who’s decision was it?
When Smallville began, it revolved around Clark Kent (Tom Welling), a high school student who was discovering his super powers. As time has gone on, he’s learned how to use his abilities and is now balancing his heroics with his work at the Daily Plant newspaper. The show’s current cast includes Allison Mack, Callum Blue, Cassidy Freeman, Erica Durance, and Justin Hartley.
Last season, The CW network moved Smallville from its usual Thursday night timeslot to Fridays. The ratings understandably dropped quite a bit but the network still renewed the show for a 10th season. The renewal had supposedly been hinging on whether or not Welling wanted to keep doing the series.
The decision has now been made that season 10 will be the show’s last. The network was supposed to make an official announcement at the upfronts but Welling jumped the gun and told HollywoodLife at an event on Tuesday night. The actor also reflected on what he’s learned by playing Clark Kent for so long. He said, “Once you think you have perfected things, you’ve got to keep practicing. There is always something to learn! It works for me and it will work for others.”

It remains to be seen who made the decision to end the show. Did the network decide to cancel it or was the choice made on the production side? Unless Welling (who’s now 33-years-old) decided that he’d had enough, it likely comes down to a mixture of the two and simple economics. The show will have been around for 10 seasons, has gotten more expensive to produce, and doesn’t bring as much ad revenue anymore.
On top of that, there are certainly more than enough episodes to keep the show running in syndication for a long time. By the end of the show’s run, there will be enough installments for a station to play once a day for seven months without repeating.
By announcing the ending a year in advance, the network can promote Smallville’s season 10 as the last and the producers will have ample time to plan how they want to wrap things up.
What do you think? Are you glad that Smallville’s coming to an end or should it keep going? Anything you’d like to see happen? Perhaps Lex Luthor’s return?

Smallville should end. Give the show a small break, then bring it back as superman.
As a fan of the previous seasons of the show, it lost its endearing qualities and originality during S8. I miss the emphasis that was once focused on Clark’s early life before the “Superman” mythos steered the show into an increase of Metropolis scenes, with the redundant backlit street set, and the darker ambiance that now accompanies SV versus the frequent farm scenes associated with the show’s earlier season. I miss the touching scenes with Tom Welling opposite Kristin Kreuk in a town by the same name that was once proudly represented by a series entitled “Smallville”. Since I was… Read more »
NO CLANA PLEASE!!!!! I’m serious it is long dead!
I agree with all of that except for the PETE ROSS part, SV early seasons fan.
He was just a token character and didn’t add a thing to the show that couldn’t have been accomplished without him.
Sure will miss SV when it’s gone. 🙁
Well, I know SV is based on Superman story. Yet, I think SV was great and briliant in choosing its different approach when the original creators dared to explore the life before Clark became Superman. It was indeed very refreshing. Maybe that’s why Tom Welling decided to give it a chance after letting the offer down twice. It was also refreshing to bring Lana into the show. She’s the CANON character. She’s one of the reasons I got hooked and addicted with SV. She never ceased to amaze me until her arcs in S8. But the main reason I loved… Read more »
well if this show wants ppl to watch, let them bring Lex and Lana and the CLANA back… this how it started and this is how it should END! with Clark and Lana as the sweethearts and Lex the villain… I think it is only fair to end the show with the BIG THREE as it started ! no lois lane to taint and no big failure as Tess or comic freaks! SV was unique until it decided to get rid of its originality. and unless they bring the uniqness back, MANY wouldn’t watch, I one of them!
I will watch season 10 if it ends with CLANA, Clark and Lana just as much as it began with them. and Lex as the villain… it started with these big three and I think it is only RIGHT AND FAIR to end with them… Lex being the evil and Lana close to him as his girl.
it started with them and it should end with them,,, that is my only condition to watch it!
@Alykin He hasn’t flown yet??? So disappointed. He flew in Season 5 and 5 years later he hasn’t figured it out. rats. I’m currently on season 6 (episode 12) and I really can’t stand Lois. Lana’s growing away from him and he’s just not into her anymore. They should have cast a better girl for Lois and maybe the transition would have been more interesting to watch. Eww. Anyway, as for season 10 being the last, I’m all for it. Let’s move his butt to Metropolis and have anew show named “Metropolis” where he realizes his duty and like Green… Read more »
If season 10 is the season finale of Smallville, I just hope that it doesn’t end too fast with all the events coming together too abruptly. I want to see what happens with Lois and Clark, and see him fly!
Smallville has been a great show for me and my family. There were caractors we hated and loved. My whole family will be sad when it ends. But the whole show has been for us, Clark growing up to become the man. We are hoping to see him fly, we want to know how he makes everyone forget who he is, We are hoping to see him as the man of steel, and we’ll all be there for opening day if there is a movie.
Smallville is the best show ever, and canceling it would be horrible. The show should go on forever and eventually progress to Superman. Everyone knows he is the best possible Superman in the universe. He is perfect for the role. Don’t be stupid, finish it and make some damn movies.
rates, rates ,after posted the show to friday night what you expect,i bet there is more viewrs watching smalville than other series being presented wrigth now.start something, finish it
all the fans would like to see an end to smalville.it should have a closure, probably the drop in ratingd was because the day choosen was fridays, ther is a lot of stupid shows that people watch, should think a lot more of the fans that pay to have your chanel and would like to see smalville have an end.its like starting a job and quit, give up.in your case is the ratings but nobody wins everytime.please finish the series.i know there is a lot of good people with similar coments
what high ratings are you people talking about??? the show ended this season with 2.0 million,,, is that what you want to see? for Tom Welling to end with shame? no matter what, shows lose ratings naturally as seasons go by, so unless those who do not care about TW to end with grace, the show will reach till one million or 90,000 viewers by the end of the three years that other people are demanding from the show, unless you want it to reach one viewer … lol! I think it is time to move on, this show has… Read more »
well if u plan on ending it at least give us the last part of where u ended it with him falling off the roof with the blue krypton in his stomach I’m sure we all want to know what happens next ?
As much as I hate feeding a stupid question with a reply…
That episode ended season 9. This announcement means that there’s one more season. That’s plenty of time to wrap things up in the story.
