Netflix’s Gilmore Girls revival is still a while away. But fans of the series can see an easter egg in the streaming service’s new series, Degrassi: Next Class, according to Vulture.
Degrassi: Next Class debuted on Netflix on January 15th.
Apparently, episode six of the Canadian teen series features an entire Gilmore Girls subplot. As Vulture details, one of the series’ characters, Zoe, begins to suspect that David Sutcliffe (the actor) is her father. In the series’ plot, Zoe’s mother was an extra on Gilmore Girls, in which Sutcliffe played Christopher (Rory Gilmore’s father). Zoe then stalks Sutcliffe to find out the truth.
Matt Huether, a writer for Degrassi: Next Class, told Vulture the crossover was a total coincidence and not a cross-promotional effort from Netflix:
It was not at all a Netflix-suggested tie-in. We just love Gilmore Girls. We’re all huge Gilmore Girls fans in the writers’ room and we were delighted to figure out that the timeline worked for Zoe’s mom to be an extra on the show when she might have gotten pregnant. And we also thought it was great that Zoe’s comfort show was about a mother-daughter relationship.”
No word on whether Sutcliffe will appear in the Gilmore Girls revival series.
