Why did Designated Survivor have to go? Recently, Variety speculated on the reasons why ABC cancelled the TV show after two seasons.
The political drama centers on Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland), a low-level cabinet member who becomes President of the United States after a massive attacked on the capitol. The cast also includes Natascha McElhone, Adan Canto, LaMonica Garrett, Kal Penn, Maggie Q, Malik Yoba, Paulo Costanzo, Zoe McLellan, Ben Lawson, Tanner Buchanan, and Mckenna Grace.
According to Variety, there are several reasons why ABC decided to cancel Designated Survivor. For one, the drama was sinking in the ratings. So far, season is averaging a .71 in the 18-49 demo and only 3.951 million viewers.
Secondly, the show has gone through four showrunners in only two seasons. And, to cap things off, season three would have required Designated Survivor to move production from Toronto to Los Angeles, a costly move for a low-rated series.
What do you think? Have you seen Designated Survivor? Would you have watched a third season?
It was a great show and showed, reasonably accurately, the ins and outs of political life. The cast was exceptional. Each week, something exciting or dangerous happens, yet there are always “family scenes. It was the ONLY show I watch on ABC and I want it back !
We liked the show and are sorry it’s cancelled. Possibly if something had gone well for the President every once in a while it would have been more popular — the constant catastrophes were a little wearing, but we liked it anyway.
I want Season III, it is a very good show, with action, secrets, family happenings,
netflix Yess i become a member then,….
I would gladly watch for the third season I mad because they say the age group ,what about us that are older then that age group we really enjoyed it allot. Please consider bringing it back
Enjoyed it, great show.
Did Washington have anything to do with it!?
Sounds like Trump got rid of it as it was getting too close to truth
That’s so ridiculous!
We watched every show and thought it was a good, clean, intriguing show. Not much else we liked to watch on TV.
I watched every episode and was looking forward to the new season and the rest of the current season, it was a good show and did not deserve to be cancelled considering how many bad shows are on tv this one was a winner I hope that it will be picked up by another network
I would watch Zoe McLellan read the phone book, especially if she went back to her original hairstyle from NCIS: New Orleans.
This was one of the few shows my husband & I watched together. Designated Survivor was an intelligent, well-acted program that often spoke to the issues we are facing in the real life political arena. The last scene of the 2nd season was extremely disturbing. It showed Emily, President Kirkman’s most loyal supporter who had been with him before he became President, giving an envelope to the Russian enemy. What? We want to know what happened? Please bring it back! We want to know what Emily was doing. Can’t accept that she did anything that would endanger President Kirkman!
Nooo. This is the only show my wife and I watch religiously. Say it ain’t so!
I loved the show. We were left with a cliffhanger. One of the more intelligent shows on TV. A better time slot would help and I think it would eventually pick up support.
Love the show, would definitely watch more. BRING IT BACK !!!
Very unfortunate. Seemed to demonstrate what a real president could achieve. Perhaps the Canadian connection was too much for the American viewer. Regardless it was very enjoyable to watch without all of the violence that tends to be associated with many of the hit shows. NCIS was a good example of a series with a reasonable story line that was family friendly. Yes, I am Canadian and enjoyed a show that depicted an America that hopefully will return in the future. Fingers crossed.
