On Tuesday, ABC pre-empted Detroit 1-8-7 with a special edition of 20/20 in which Diane Sawyer interviewed Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s husband about the Tucson shooting. Based on the preliminary ratings for the program, ABC made a good choice. It attracted a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.18 million total viewers. While those aren’t great numbers, they’re a 30% improvement over last week’s episode of Detroit 1-8-7 (1.0 in the demo with 5.05 million).
Next week, the cop drama will be replaced by the annual State of the Union address. Right now, Detroit 1-8-7 is scheduled to return on February 1st but one has to wonder if that will actually happen. ABC has a track record of pre-empting low-rated shows with the intention of bringing them back but it just never happens.
The network has ordered 18 installments of Detroit 1-8-7 and 12 of those have aired so far. It would seem like a waste not to air the remaining six but the same could be said for the leftover seven episodes of The Whole Truth. If ABC can keep coming up with specials that will perform better, we may likely have seen the last of low-rated Detroit 1-8-7.
What do you think? Will Detroit 1-8-7 return to the regular schedule or lost in hiatus and cancelled?

Please do not cancel this show. And, please, no more pre-empting Detroit 1-8-7, especially with the overexposed and ranting Charlie Sheen. I’m sick to death of hearing about him already. Please give Detroit 1-8-7 a fair chance at making a go of it.
this is an excellent show. ABC – I am getting tired of you guys. We connect with a show and its characters and then its gond. No wonder the cable networks give you guys a run for your money. Please keep this show on. I loved Hill Street Blues and this show has the possibility of being that kind of show with its unsumble of stars. PLEASE GIVE IT A CHANCE.
Detroit 1-8-7 is without a doubt the best new crime drama in the past three years, with an outstanding ensemble cast! If it not succeeding, it is largely due to the poor performance of ABS’s marketing department in bringing the show to the attention of its target demographic. It’s aterrific effort and I hope ABS will put a little more into making it succeed in the way it can!
Please do not cancel this series. It is a tremendous product – cast is excellent, especially Mr. Imperioli….the episodes are pretty true to life for the present-day Detroit. The city has changed tremendously since my days living there (1950s).
Also, I was really disgusted, disappointed, etc. that you chose not to show this evenings episode in favor of 20/20. Do we really need to see another minute of Charlie Sheen – not a very good role model for our younger generation. Shame on ABC.
The Good Wife on CBS was interesting……..
I look forward to Detroit 187 each week and miss it. How about using slots like Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice for these lame specials.
To say I’m appalled at the ongoing pre-emptions of “Detroit 187” is an understatement. I hadn’t known that ABC is at the bottom of the barrel as far as network ratings; however, it’s no surprised when they do a bait and switch like including Detroit 187 in our TV schedule as recently as 8PM PST, then betraying us by offering up mental pablum on the already-overexposed Charlie Sheen. Why doesn’t ABC just cancel the show and let another of the networks pick it up? It would be far more courageous than breaking up-till-the-last minute promises to show the program! Enough… Read more »
We finally get a good show and they cancel it. Please bring it back. I truly enjoy watching something filmed in my city. I watch it on line all the time alone with watching it on Tuesday’s. The actors in the show have been so positive about Detroit and I would hate to see all their praise go out the window. Please don’t cancel it.
This is the only broadcast network TV show that I watch, and it has been a while since I have watched any network shows other than the Sunday morning talkfests. Maybe it’s just that I’m from Michigan, but I love a cop show that’s not in NY or LA (sorry, Southland) and actually shows snow on the ground! Network folks, there are a lot of us that identify with snow and are tired of New York! Michael Imperioli is wonderful actor. I remember his guest stars on various L&A platforms, particularly the episode in which he portrayed a troubled radio… Read more »
To pre-empt Detroit 187 to show an interview with this idiot shows what’s wrong with this country. Some times stuoidity runs rampant.
I hope they bring Detroit 187 back. I really liked to show.
ABC You are the most ridiculous Network I have ever seen constantly pre-empting Detroit 1-8-7. Excellent show but what you pre-empt for is utter garbage
This is a well-written show with good character development. It’s had very little chance to find its audience, especially given the fact that it’s a mediocre timeslot and ABC does NOT make it (or any of its other shows) available through ON DEMAND. The ensemble cast works well together, and I hope to see it back on prime time.
Keep it keep it keep it…let’s us have Detroit 1-8-7!
This is one of the VERY FEW times I even watch ABC. You guys really have a excellent show here, too bad you can’t see that! Most good dramas take time to catch on. Shows like Detroit 1-8-7 could bring viewers back to ABC in a big way.
BRING BACK DETROIT 1-8-7 !!!!!!!!
ABC – You have one of the best crime dramas on tv for once in a long while. Please give it life…promote it…water it…let it grow. The show has a gritty undertone, good character development and interesting plot lines. So far, it hasn’t fallen into the trap of having to pair up every character in the script, nor to have every third episode related to some coincidental crime in one of the character’s lives. It is edgy, fun, and has depth and wit. Don’t just keep it – keep it regular and viewable. We’re out here, trying to watch the… Read more »
