On Tuesday, ABC pre-empted Detroit 1-8-7 with a special edition of 20/20 in which Diane Sawyer interviewed Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s husband about the Tucson shooting. Based on the preliminary ratings for the program, ABC made a good choice. It attracted a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.18 million total viewers. While those aren’t great numbers, they’re a 30% improvement over last week’s episode of Detroit 1-8-7 (1.0 in the demo with 5.05 million).
Next week, the cop drama will be replaced by the annual State of the Union address. Right now, Detroit 1-8-7 is scheduled to return on February 1st but one has to wonder if that will actually happen. ABC has a track record of pre-empting low-rated shows with the intention of bringing them back but it just never happens.
The network has ordered 18 installments of Detroit 1-8-7 and 12 of those have aired so far. It would seem like a waste not to air the remaining six but the same could be said for the leftover seven episodes of The Whole Truth. If ABC can keep coming up with specials that will perform better, we may likely have seen the last of low-rated Detroit 1-8-7.
What do you think? Will Detroit 1-8-7 return to the regular schedule or lost in hiatus and cancelled?

I AM GETTTING SO TIRED OF THE NETWORKS CANCELLING SHOWS BEFORE THEY ARE GIVEN A FAIR CHANCE!!! THEY NEED TO GIVE THE SHOWS A CHANCE TO CATCH ON INSTEAD OF BEING SO GREEDY.
We just love this show. Finally one that has some substance and ‘grit’.
Don’t cancel this show! At least give it a little time to catch on more.
I like this show also and would like to continue watching it.
Too good to lose!
So I am in Valencia, Spain and I thought I would catch up with the show I thought I had missed. Cancelled. Perhaps ABC and Disney could come up with a new way for us to watch people lose weight, or quit smoking or dive into mud pits. Very intelligent programing. In 1971 I put a down payment on my first house with Disney stock. At the time it was worth $125.00 per share. That is in 1971 dollars. Now what is it? 30 bucks? Eisner “buried” that company and walked away with 90mil. I am sure old Walt “spun”… Read more »
don’t cancel show.
It’s a GREAT show….LOVE the diversity of actors and storylines. Please give the opportunnity to find their audience like so many shows have been given in the past years. Those show exceeded everyone’s expextations.
I cannot believe this show was cancelled. I thought that it was one of the best ” COP” shows to air in some time. Great cast and well filmed it was and is what Detroit is like today. Sorry to see it go. I hope others will speak up and try to get it back on the air.I hate when a show gets cancelled due to the time slot it is placed in.
Yes, people whine about not being able to find anything good on TV, any “quality” programming, and then when something amazing like Detroit 187 comes along, they don’t watch it anyway. If ABC wants to cut, consider slicing Desperate Housewives. That show’s so long in the tooth saber tooth tigers are jealous. And the salary of one of the star’s of that show could probably pay the production costs for Detroit 187 for an entire season. By all accts., everyone involved w/D187 is committed and supports the show. It’s been amazingly positive for the Detroit region economically. How many other… Read more »
Great show, perfect casting, good writing. Leave the show!!!
This is a great show – I wish they wouldn’t cancel it!
ABC finally has a great show in Detroit 187 and what dom they do? They put Diane Sawyer on with Charlie Sheen and before that they bore us with congress woman gifford’s unfortunate situation. What’s the deal? Derroit 187 is a great show and deserves a spot on the network. Hope to see it again soon.
For heaven sake, leave it on the air. Leave it where a viewer can find it. Don’t move and pre empt all the time.
Great show.
Of course Detroit 1-8-7 is going to be cancelled. All the good ones seem to be. It’s been pre-empted for Gabrielle Giffords’ husband, for Obama and just last night for Charlie Sheen. Really??? Why must you people mess with a good thing???? You take this off the air, the only decent show you’re left with Castle. Planning on taking that one off, too???? CBS has already done quite a lot of damage to their programming. Following in their footsteps? Guess it’s a good thing I really enjoy sports and there are a lot of them on for me to watch… Read more »
I think it is a great show and do not take it off the air.
It is a VERY excellent show. The characters are interesting and human. The stories are true to life. I have grown up watching television since the 1950’s and I know a good cop show when I see one!! It is as good as Hill Street Blues. Give it time to catch on. Advertise it a little more ABC, for crying out loud!! This is why I hesitate to watch any dramas on ABC.
