On Tuesday, ABC pre-empted Detroit 1-8-7 with a special edition of 20/20 in which Diane Sawyer interviewed Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s husband about the Tucson shooting. Based on the preliminary ratings for the program, ABC made a good choice. It attracted a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.18 million total viewers. While those aren’t great numbers, they’re a 30% improvement over last week’s episode of Detroit 1-8-7 (1.0 in the demo with 5.05 million).
Next week, the cop drama will be replaced by the annual State of the Union address. Right now, Detroit 1-8-7 is scheduled to return on February 1st but one has to wonder if that will actually happen. ABC has a track record of pre-empting low-rated shows with the intention of bringing them back but it just never happens.
The network has ordered 18 installments of Detroit 1-8-7 and 12 of those have aired so far. It would seem like a waste not to air the remaining six but the same could be said for the leftover seven episodes of The Whole Truth. If ABC can keep coming up with specials that will perform better, we may likely have seen the last of low-rated Detroit 1-8-7.
What do you think? Will Detroit 1-8-7 return to the regular schedule or lost in hiatus and cancelled?

My husband and I watch this every time it’s on. Great characters, great stories, it’s much better than most other shows on TV. It the only ABC show we watch.
I have looked forward to every show & have been disappointed to miss it the past several weeks. ABC…you stink!
I really enjoy this show. How can you cancel a show with out giving the viewers and ending. Really leaves us hanging as to what happens in the character’s lives. The crime stories are good as well. I agree….maybe advertise it a bit more and people would know about it. I ask my friends and they have not heard of it.
One of the few cop shows I really like. I hope they don’t cancel. Maybe try a different time slot.
You don’t know a good show when you have one!
Finally a great TV show and it’s already cancelled? Why was this show cancelled? I can’t believe it! I looked forward to the Tuesday night Detroit 1-8-7 show! I think the cast is super! This stinks!
I looked forward to this show each week. What I liked the most was that the characters felt like real people. Please, please, please don’t cancel this show.
To the Network,
This is a great show , well written, well acted, Interesting stories all wrapped up in Detriot 1-8-7-. You folks at the Network would do well to learn a little from cable television. They run old shows regularly and get good viewership. The reason you folks are struggle is because you look at 6 or 12 shows and then dump them regardless of what you viewers think. Leave this show on and it will be successful.

My husband and I LOVE this show!! How can it gain a loyal following if it is always being pre empted. Love the setting of Detroit; great characters and story lines! It hasn’t been on for two weeks now. Of course people are going to lose interest. Please leave it on …. how about Thursdays at 10 pm?
Please keep 187 alive, put it on saturday night since there is nothing on at all. If we are out we will DVR it. My whole family loves this show.
Great idea!!!
I love this show. Good actors, great cop drama. I hope they keep it on. I agree with DRS alot of the best shows were cancelled like Without a trace, Cold case, etc. I guess some people don’t know a good show when they see it.
Great show hope it stay!
This is one of our families favorite shows. We love the actors and the story lines. But ABC is good for not letting a show finish it’s season. They always cancel the shows we like!
I enjoy the show it is true to life. The problem is not alot of people know about the show there is no advertising or push for the show. They have excellent story lines. I hope they give it another chance and send the word out this program.
BEST SHOW ON TV. Please don’t cancel.
I absolutely love this show. It is on a par with NYPD Blue. It is one of the few shows I eagerly await every week. Great character development, interesting story lines. I did not appreciate it being replaced by the 20/20 interviews, especially teh one about Charlie Scheen.
