Despite low ratings and being omitted from the CBS series renewal order in March, creator and executive producer Robert Doherty is still hopeful his Elementary TV show will not be cancelled. He’s so optimistic, in fact, that he included cliffhangers into the Elementary season five finale episode.
A CBS procedural crime drama, Elementary follows detective Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Dr. Joan Watson (Lucy Liu). Also starring are Aidan Quinn as Captain Thomas Gregson and Jon Michael Hill as Detective Marcus Bell. The cast also includes John Noble and Nelsan Ellis.
TV Line reports Doherty is betting on a sixth season:
“I’m an eternal optimist,” Doherty tells TVLine. “I feel good. I feel like we’ve had a strong season. We’re certainly very pleased with the way it’s wrapping up. And trust me, there’s a lot of Elementary left in this humble writing staff. Many, many stories to come.”
Doherty adds that the Season 5 closer (airing Sunday, May 21 at 10/9c) was “absolutely” intended as “a season finale,” not a series ender. And if it does turn out to be the show’s swan song, viewers might be left without closure, seeing as how the episode features “a cliffhanger in a couple of respects.”
Elementary Season Five: A Look at the Ratings
The fifth season of Elementary is currently averaging a 0.67 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.94 million viewers. Compared to season four, that’s down by 30% and down by 14%, respectively.
Among other scripted CBS TV shows, Elementary ranks above only Doubt, which has already been cancelled, Training Day, which hasn’t been officially cancelled but will be, and Ransom. Although a renewal is not impossible, a sixth season of Elementary does not seem too likely.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Elementary TV show? Should CBS cancel or renew it for season six?
This is a great show with the eternalHolmes franchise. It is intelligent, and realistic more than most show and has the right amount of humor. Lucy Liu is wonderful and Jonny Lee fantastic. Please continue the show
Please renew my favorite show! Why not cancel some of the sporting events that always mess things up on Sunday night?!
This is a very entertaining show, a 1000 times better than o lot of very silly shows that we put up with! Shame on CBS for even considering a cancellation.
We need a lot more shows, especially this one .
The decrease in viewership is correlated with the move from Thursday to Sunday. Big fan, totally not in the referenced demographic. Really smart show, intriguing.
Yes it should b renewed!
Its not its fault that CBS has stupid sports that go over time
Past its scheduling
ALL THE TIME
It messes up schedules
When most shows r a Hr
& then of course
Reg channels have no encores!
I watch Elementary at 9pm
Then i watch encores of cable shows
Rest of night!
But when its not on@ 9pm
That messes it all up!
Greatly enjoy this show. Well written, suspenseful, and engaging to watch. Totally agree that Sunday night is an awful time for it to air.
Please keep Elementary!
So a cliffhanger was written to push CBS toward a renewal, that is how I see it.
Of course networks have still cancelled shows.
Every season is the same with a project character brought in for Joan and Sherlock to fix or help (Moriarty, Sherlock’s Father, Brother, Kitty and Shinwell). More development has been spent on those 5 than on Bell or Gregson.
Expand the ensemble w/younger Americans, women & go international beyond London. I’m a fan especially of Lucy.
We love it! Hope it stays on
Never watch it
I thoroughly enjoy this series.
If it will end , they should not let it end with a cliff hanger. It is disrespectful to its loyal followers.
I love this show. I will be so sad if it is cancelled. They could at least renew enough shows to tie up loose ends as many other shows do now.
They pulled a 0.5 last night in 18-49. If they care about their viewers, they might want to shoot a non-cliffhanger endign
CBS usually prefers to measure their viewers in the 24-55 category, but your point is on the money. The show has made it to the point of syndication. The ratings are awful. In fact, CBS should be embarrassed. Lucy Liu is wonderful, but it is time to end the show.
I LOVE this smart, engaging, well-written show! I never tire of the case-of-the-week, and the ongoing stories are compelling. Miller’s Sherlock is brilliant and unique, and I would miss him greatly. I could point out that 9/10 PM on a Sunday night isn’t the best time slot, and ratings could improve greatly putting the show back on Thursday nights.
