What’s This TV Show About?
Airing on the ABC television network, The Good Doctor stars Freddie Highmore, Antonia Thomas, Nicholas Gonzalez, Chuku Modu, Beau Garrett, Hill Harper, Tamlyn Tomita, and Richard Schiff. The medical drama comes from from House creator David Shore and Lost vet Daniel Dae Kim and is based on a South Korean series of the same name.
The Good Doctor centers on Dr. Shaun Murphy (Highmore), a new surgical resident with autism and savant syndrome. His incredible memory and keen ability to perceive spatial relations inform Shaun’s gifted comprehension of his patients. Meanwhile, his autism can hinder his ability to communicate with others. With only the help of his advocate, Dr. Aaron Glassman (Schiff), Shaun must challenge the skepticism and prejudices of the hospital’s board and medical staff, in order to do his job and save lives.

Telly’s Take
Will The Good Doctor be cancelled or renewed for season two on ABC? It premiered with very healthy ratings, was picked up for a full season, and a thriving drama is just what the doctor ordered for the Alphabet Network. As long as the ratings don’t drop that much, my gut says it will easily score a renewal. For now, I will keep an eye on the Nielsens and will update this page with breaking developments, as well as any change in this show’s prognosis. I LOVE this show!!
This has become one of our favorite shows. We don’t know if it represents real autism but we enjoy the acting and situations Shaun gets into. Please give us more!!
I work with students with autism. The Good Doctor does a pretty good job! One of my favorite shows. Was sad to see it come to an end. I’m hoping for a season 2!
The good doctor is a wonderful tv show and I think it should have more seasons because it shows that you may have an illness but that doesn’t stop you for being whatever you inspire to be
I enjoy watching “The Good Doctor”, and think the show should be renewed. But why only half a season of episodes? I will miss the show this week. I agree that Dr. Shaun’s character needs more oomph each week, like we saw in the first episode. I like his “MacGyver” way of saving people with duct tape and soda machine tubing, and how we get to see him figuring in his head. If the writers could do this every week consistently, then I think “The Good Doctor” has a good chance to be around for many seasons. It’s a good,… Read more »
The first episode was good. Every episode since sucked. The show lacks sufficient character development. I don’t see how it will make it to a second year.
It is my favorite show, each episode gets better and better. I certainly hope it’s renewed for years to come.
There has been a heaping of character development, you just have to pay closer attention to notice it because the show doesn’t say it outright. The development is subtle which is why the show is so good.
Agree on the “subtle” part! It’s brilliant really only if you managed to pick up on it, I loved that it’s not the “in your face” kind of obvious and heck, I cried every single episode. So yeah, good show! Vouching for season 2!
“The Good Doctor” should be Renewed for Season Two, deffinantly!!! I love this show. It gives you an accurate look at what autism is like from a very personal perpestive. It demonstrates that a person with autism CAN and DOES SUCEED in life. It is not easy, but YES it can be done!!! I love the way the actors on the show develop relationships that are forever changing, challenging, and developing. I also love the flash backs to Shawn’s childhood and his relationship with his brother. There was such a love and acceptance there. Shawn is not perfect, and I’m… Read more »
No, it does not give an accurate description of autism. Autism in TV in this case is Aspergers, less than 10% of individuals on the spectrum. Autism in real life, in more cases than you can wrap your mind around, is a non verbal individual with sensory issues that places him/her into self stimulating behaviors including but not limited to; meltdowns, flailing, screaming, biting. This show should be cancelled as once again it puts unrealistic portrayals of a subject that needs far more education and understanding. Your comment included. Father of a special needs teenage.
It is entertainment not factual. If it was all about facts it would be a documentary .
I agree it’s a TV show. This is one show that I can sit and watch with my 11 year old son. I have watched him cry and get upset about how Shawn is treated by others. It does teach our children to be more excepting of others with disabilities. Most shows on TV I’m asking him to turn his head or I have to explain thing that he is still a bit young to know.
just because you don’t like something does not mean the rest of the world has to dislike it along with you. just change the channel! I love this show! it’s way better then all the rest of the non sense on tv. at least this gives values and people are dressed not half naked like what they think is the only way to get desperate ratings from viewers! this can actually be watched as a family. not much of these type of shows left. A show doesn’t always have to be exactly as in reality at least its passing the… Read more »
I love this show too. I just found it. I cry the whole time because people are so unaccepting of others not like them–even if more advanced or capable or doing something like jogging that they won’t do. I am small framed female, never accepted because I live a healthy lifestyle because I am a born again Christian. Re: Jogging or actually just out to start a walking program at least 10 different people acted as though going to hit me. People are so lost; they hate themselves and want to go out hurting others. We all need Jesus.
I work with students with autism every day in a school setting. It is our job to help teach coping skills. I have had many students in the last 8 years and only one has demonstrated the behavior you are talking about. The spectrum is so broad, it’s hard to really judge. Doctor Shaun Murphy does a great job on the show!
excellent show and very true to his condition he plays a really good part and has it down to perfect please keep the show
Needs to be cancelled. I am a therapist who works with autism. The show is overly exaggerated and uncomfortable to watch. To stay on it needs to be toned down.
If it is uncomfortable to watch it, by all means you should watch another show. Let me ones who enjoy it so much enjoy. I wish it was an hour show.
Beverly, it IS an hour show.
As someone diagnosed with ASD, I appreciate this show GREATLY for giving potential to others with my disorder. Please, keep your opinions to yourself.
Sir no offense but this is a good show u may be a dream but they’re people also
My brother has Aspergers, which is a form of autism, and watching this show has made me understand a bit more what my brother goes through with his day to day life, of course, he’s not a surgeon, but seeing some of the actions Shaun does, my brother also does.
If it is uncomfortable to watch then watch something else. Many of us love this as an entertaining drama. If you want more about the autism issue ask someone to file a documentary
I am a retired nurse and maybe you need your senses sensitized.
Need to have a 2nd season, For the matter at hand need to have at less 10 seasons
RENEW!!’ Love it
Love the Tv show Good Doctor! This show should not be cancelled!
Excellent. 2nd season please.
The Good Doctor is posting numbers that I have not seen in an ABC show for a while.
Why would it be acceptable to say ******** on tv but when I wrote that word here it was blanked out?
Umm… Most likely, unlike the show, this forum ain’t restricted for the ‘TV-14’ audience. But still, given you wanna convey full meaning of your comment, what was that? Was it a B-word seen as a “sexist” insult towards women or what? Just give us an easy hint.
It seems it was the term “********” even though it was used by Claire after she was in bed with Jarrod.
You can comment without having to use bad language it’s not necessary Verna Hall
Why did the show start with a sex scene and crude language about ********? Good show except for that.
Love this new show! Teaches good values, science, and medical issues. I had my grandsons watch it and they were mesmerized! I hope they don’t turn it into a sexual escapade since children are watching!
Will, since it ain’t PBS®, you’ll have to check ratings before every single episode-premiere before making your children watch it.
Making your children watch it? No need.
Ansolutely Loved “Good Doctor”!!
Brought tesrs of joy for this wonderful
Show. What great acting and story line!
What great empathy and understanding of handicapped people that are so useful in society yet put down because of their disabilities. Great Show. Keep it coming!
finally a good show comes on and already I can’t find the next episode. As a nurse, I find this show pretty accurate and our family loves it. There is a lot of trash on all major networks…finally a good one and now where is it?
Defin Should get a second season
Best new show I’ve seen in years
