Though Harry’s Law was the most-watched scripted TV show on NBC this season, the network cancelled it. As I’ve suggested in the past, advertisers favor shows that attract those in the 18-49 demographic. Though Harry’s Law had a lot of viewers, the legal series had some of the lowest demographic numbers on the network.
When asked why Kathy Bates and company had been let go, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said, “It was a difficult decision. Everyone here respects Harry’s Law a lot but we were finding it hard to grow the audience for it. Its audience skewed very old. It’s hard to monetize that.”
Bates broke the news of the show’s cancellation over the weekend. She wrote to fans, “Sad news today. Harry’s Law will not be renewed for a 3rd season. We are all terribly sad. Many thanks for all your support.”

The actress later noted, “Waiting for this verdict was tough. We wrapped a month ago so it was a very long wait!”
Bates reconciled, “Tough day getting used to the idea of no more Harry. Think I’ll keep her with me 4ever.”
When asked if there was a possibility that Harry’s Law might move to cable, Bates responded, “No hope.” But, responding to an inquiry last night on the subject, Bates wrote, “Not sure, but don’t think so.”
Justine Lupe, who played Phoebe Blake, wrote, “Sad day. Little bit of heartbreak. What a gift to had had this time.”
Actress Karen Olivo, who joined the cast in season two as Cassie Reynolds, responded with a message to her castmates, “It was an honor, my friends!”
Nathan Corddry, who’d been playing Adam Branch since the show began, noted, “I’d thank everyone individually, but the list is too long.Never was happier professionally. Thank you for a wondrful 2 years. #tough2swallow”
What do you think? Are you going to miss Harry’s Law as much as the cast will? If the show did move to another channel, would you follow it?
Harry’s Law is the best show on Channel 4. I was shocked to hear it was cancelled. Wonderful K. Bates and the rest of the staff including great writers. Please, bring, the show back to TV. Would be nice to have class instead of trash on TV.
Shame on NBC for dropping Harry’s Law. I looked forward to seeing it each week. Put it on another network?……………….go for it. Bring it back?………….yes, yes, yes. I hope other fans take time to voice their opinion. Kathy Bates was fantastic as well as the entire cast.
BRING BACK HARRY’S LAW!!!!!
Sad to see this series go. Intelligent writing and likable characters. Tommy Jefferson was my favorite. Someone I would love to have as a friend in real life. No other show on TV made me think about my positions on different issues and really look at why I believe that way. When TV can do that, it’s really good. Hopefully a cable channel will pick this up, but it’s doubtful.
I was very saddened to hear that Harry’s Law has been cancelled. It was one of my favorite shows. It is just another example of why NBC is the biggest disaster of all of the TV networks. I understand their point when they say that the demographics show that the audience is “older” for this show – well, duh – get advertisers who have products for older customers! I’d love to see “Harrys Law” move to another channel – either cable or network would be fine with me. I’ll also bet that NBC replaces the show with a real loser… Read more »
How disappointing to learn that one of television’s best shows has been cancelled. Kathy Bates is such a great actress and she was perfect to play Harry. Sure hope cable will pick up the show. Wish NBC would reconsider.
Truly sad that Harry was cancelled, loved the quirky cast and story lines. It’s was really the only program on NBC that my husband and I would watch each week. Please reconsider and bring Harry’s Law back for the fans.
We are so disappointed that Harry’s Law has been cancelled. It’s ridiculous that half hour sitcoms and senseless reality shows have taken over the ‘demographics’ ratings. Where has a little quality in tv disappeared to? This has been an excellent series – we’re catering to the lowest common demonator as usual.
Shame on NBC!
Can’t beleive you are canceling this show. It has real life cases on here and to listen to the closing remarks on the show, gives you things to think about. Maybe change someones mind about certain things or people. It’s on of the few good shows on TV anymore. Always have loved Kathy Bates, she has just enough sarcasim and humor to make the show. This show is a very good show. You are taking off all the good shows and putting on crap you threw together. Not like you can’t tell the difference. You don’t seem to have any… Read more »
P.S. To Kathy Bates….you rock….the “suits” have it wrong…..we love you!
I’m angry… Harry has good numbers…just bad demographics. I say baloney to NBC….they are not hiring the right marketing people to find the right advertisers. At 55, I don’t want to see “Depends” ads….nor Ciaslis….but what’s wrong with Revlon, L’Oreal, cruise lines. Figure it out!!!
This would be a perfect show to go and play to the cable cutter and streaming box crowd by moving to the internet and selling the show/season passes at a decent price with product placements and adds. This would kill without a network and possibly get a larger international following than it already has.
I was just starting to get into it.
I like the one where she shot down the police drone.
Absolute Insanity. One of the truly fine shows on TV, and NBC, in it’s infinite wisdom decides to cancel Harry’s Law. What the hell is wrong with this country and the networks. Is everything about the almighty #$%%%$$ dollar? Please, cable TV networks, listen to me….pick up Harry’s Law, reap the profits and tell NBC to go ….##$%&$# themselves. I stopped watching the Today Show after more than 40 years when they had Sarah Palin co-host, I promise you, I will never watch NBC again if you pick up Harry’s Law. It is a great show and so different from… Read more »
I agree totally.
Please bring back Harry,s Law. I promise I will buy everything that is advertised on the show. My husband and I love this show and love Kathy Bates.
Excellent show, smartly written. Kathy Bates and the entire cast had great chemistry. The cases they took on were relevant to today and many of the individuals they represented were “underdogs” of sorts. They also demonstrated how many laws are antiquated and out of date-very eye opening! Hey NBC and Mr/Ms. Advertising Execs the 57 yr old female demographic is strong too! We watch TV and buy alot of things! So sad that you cancelled such a great show!
