It looks like the doctor is out — for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after three seasons on the air. However, the cable channel may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn’t perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven’t kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series. Dianne Wiest won a supporting actress Emmy and Glynn Turman won in the guest actor category. In 2009, In Treatment won the WGA Award for best new series.
Though In Treatment may be done as a regular series, HBO is interested in a new incarnation. A statement from HBO states, “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season of In Treatment? Would you like to see it continue in another form?

Sure hope to see it continue in some form. It has been a great series. I have viewing parties so we can all watch together.

Please keep In Treatment!!!!
PLEASE BRING IN TRMT BACK!!!
Definitely bring back intelligent television like,” In treatment!! I am glued and can’t leave the set when this program comes on!! I love the patient from India he was very good and the way he quit therapy! Geeshhh I don’t get it..why would they CANCEL something this intriguing and intelligent!! I guess they only want us watching dumb stuff like the series, “LOST”!! Which mind you looks totally stupid and I have never thought about watching not even for one moment! Why can’t these networks wake up and let us watch something more intellectual with actual dialogue that is well… Read more »
I thought the first season of In treatment was one of the best. After that, the story lines seem to drag on. The first season had compelling stories which had the troubled married couple and the Navy fighter Pilot which really took the show to the next level and adding the love chemistry as well as the reality of his broken marriage, it had it all. After that, it really jumped the shark in my opinion. My thing is, stick with what works, directors mistakes are they don’t remain consistent they switch up what got them there and that is… Read more »
Please bring back the show. My husband and I thought it was the most well written drama on television, up there with The Wire! Mr. Byrne is an amazingly honest actor and we’ve always admired his work. We do not care which format it comes back in as long as it comes back! I’ve never written an email asking that a show not be cancelled but I felt the need to do so for In Treatment. Thank you.
Please bring back the show, in whatever format that keeps the artistic integrity (but also might attract a larger number of viewers).
And try to bring back the great Amy Ryan.
In Treatment is one of the few outstanding, adult TV shows. It is so well written and acted by an outstanding cast. It has no vampires, detectives, dancing or comedy. It is a superb drama with a superb actor in the lead. Everything about it is perfect. Please renew the show in any incarnation you choose!
This show made me feel like a voyeur into other people’s most intimate secrets, but that didn’t stop me from looking. The dialogue was amazing, and the actors top notch. It is my favorite show, and I am so disappointed it will not return. Gabriel Byrne is such a good-looking tortured soul, and he alone was enough to keep me coming back. I loved the way everyone played off each other. I cannot imagine that this show in another format will stand up to the original.
Well done and casting is phenomenal. It is heavy subject matter which might not be for everyone. I appreciate this type of content and for me it has been a reason to keep my HBO subscription. I hope you’ll reconsider.
Please continue. Enery episode has been a pleasure and a life lesson to me
Please don’t discontinue entirely. It is such a quality adult series I have always enjoyed it as have my friends. Even twice a month would be better than not at hall.
Continue pleeeeeeeease!
O love the series and would be very sad it would not go on.
Pleeeeeaaaaase HBO!!!
There only a few TV shows worth turning the set on, In Treatment is one of the few that remain and I am disappointed that the networks use the means that they do to determine what their audience wants. Each year choices are becoming fewer.
