It looks like the doctor is out — for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after three seasons on the air. However, the cable channel may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn’t perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven’t kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series. Dianne Wiest won a supporting actress Emmy and Glynn Turman won in the guest actor category. In 2009, In Treatment won the WGA Award for best new series.
Though In Treatment may be done as a regular series, HBO is interested in a new incarnation. A statement from HBO states, “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season of In Treatment? Would you like to see it continue in another form?

My friends and I would love to see this wonderful program return. It is so well acted, so convincing and so intelligent. There are so many programs on cable which are super violent and unwatchable(except perhaps for a small segment of the population) and it would be great to have In Treatment back. It was a real oasis in the sea of awful programming. I have a wide circle of friends and nobody is watching the other cable shows. Please don’t give up on it because so many people will be disappointed. Not having In Treatment to look forward to… Read more »
My husband and I would love to see In Treatment come back. It was one of the only shows on TV we thought was interesting and worth watching. We have over 100 channels and only PBS and the series In Treatment on HBO were worth watching along with TCM.
Gabriel Byrne is a wonderful actor as were all the actors in the series and we are very dissappointed to have it cancelled. What were they thinking? You get some intelligent entertainment and they cancell it.
I loved the show and hate to see it canceled. Written very well. I enjoyed watching something without killing, blood and guts!
This was my favorite!! So sorry to hear there won’t be another season. The actors were so incredible and the writing riveting. Is was incomparable to all the reality crap that people watch. Who wants to see how idiotic our general population can be.
It would be sad to see such a great show just end. Yes I would want to see it come back even with a different formate. It seems that there are very few realistic shows on these days with great writting and acting. All of the shows on the networks ,dramas and comedys, are not believable.I dont believe that eny of their characters are real. The writing is all the same. Its a certain formate they all seem to follow. In treatment has all believable characters and storylines. The writers are excellent. Its not a cookie cutter production like the networks. Its also good… Read more »
I agree with PAttie above, three of my shows were cancelled this season, three of my shows that are thoughtful and for people with a brain, whereas Jersey Shore and Housewives from all corners of the country still haul in a lot of money for their created drama. The first season of In Treatment was amazing, The married couple, Amy and Josh, they were soooo dysfunctional, and so realistic, there is nothing on television comparable. Gabriel Byrne is an AMAZING actor… and I miss him being on my TV regularly. Guess I watch Little Women over and over!
I am very sad that this show has been cancelled. I am not opposed to another version of it, but I REALLY loved the in depth character exploration. Since I go to treatment myself, I found this show as a boost to my regular treatment. It has amazing insight and wonderful dialogue. The interpersonal relationships rival NO OTHER SHOW. Please bring it back in some form.
What does this say about the viewing public. There
is just bread and circuses” on TV. It is so disappointing
that In Treatment is cancelled. Why can’t someone
cater to the thinking public who enjoy good drama?
I was really hoping the show would return this Fall.
PBS does so well. I thought HBO could do it also. What about
building a network on aesthetic value, good writing,
good acting? Make the investment and please
some of the people.
It is very disappointing that a show of this calibre is not being continued – no matter what format – it would be welcome.
Im disgusted with HBO for once again canceling a favorite series of mine. Granted, the writing always deteriorates with each season in all of HBO’s series. Look at Big Love. It was painful to watch the final season, it stunk so bad. The writers change or just get lazy, but I hate seeing a once loved show get canned when it has such appeal. I will definately miss Gabriel Byrne. I do hope that some format will return, but if it’s going to be crap..please don’t bother.
Yes really disappointed that there isn’t going to be anither season>
I loved that show very sad
i reallllllllly am going to miss this show. i so enjoyed watching each and every episode and the interaction of the people and the development of the caracters. the relationship development. it was was great. it was truely one of my favorite series. cynthia fuller
Come on, HBO! I cancelled my subscription when you cancelled ‘In Treatment.’ Pathetic decision on your part.
I am very disappointed to see it has been cancelled. This show was fantastic and Byrne was masterful. It figures that all of the mindless “reality”programs go on forever, yet something like this is done after 3 seasons. I would be more than willing to accept this type of drama any way I could get it.
Very sad to see this great show end before Byrne got the Emmy he so richly deserved!!!
