It looks like the doctor is out — for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after three seasons on the air. However, the cable channel may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn’t perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven’t kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series. Dianne Wiest won a supporting actress Emmy and Glynn Turman won in the guest actor category. In 2009, In Treatment won the WGA Award for best new series.
Though In Treatment may be done as a regular series, HBO is interested in a new incarnation. A statement from HBO states, “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season of In Treatment? Would you like to see it continue in another form?

I think it’s a shame a show that I imagine is not expensive to produce (maybe I’m just imagining that) and has a dedicated following (more sure of this) is cancelled. You need to market this properly to all the hundreds of thousands of health professionals who have not discovered it and would find it relevant and probably addictive (in a good way).
best PROGRAM , I wish they would make season 4!
LOVE this series and I hope HBO will find a way to continue.
I really wish they would make season 4. I just caught up with all 3 seasons on Hbo to go. I love this show probably cause I’m a counselor & can relate to the stories.
………………..BRING IT BACK………………..
very disappointed, one of the better programs to watch. please bring it back at any form
I’m sorry they cancelled In Treatment. It’s a very good show versus so much low level stupid sitcoms available on tv.
I feel that a part of me is gone- such a great loss to hear that there will be no In Treatment 4. I feel that this tv show has changed me and my life since I have been watching it. It’s so rare to find so remarkable and condensed series related strictly to the subject of psychoanalysis. I must admit that I have learnt so much and that I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to watch it but I already miss it and dr Paul Weston, too.
I am so disappointed to hear there will not be a season 4. This is an amazing series and all of the characters were so rich and Gabriel Byrne was wonderful. I can imagine it was exhausting but am in hopes that he and a cast will be back in some form. HBO and Showtime have made some wonderful contributions in the past few years but this series is very special. I am a better person for the experience. Thank you and looking forward to a reincarnation!
Very disappointed there will not be a season four.
This show was healing for me, and kept me connected to Life! I loved it, esp Seasons 1 and 3. Irrfan Kahn and Amy Ryan, and of course Byrne, were my favs–thawt they were amazing!.
Really disappointed that InTreatment has come to an end. How sad that unique shows with such rich and intelligent writing as well as great acting are not popular while millions of people watch complete rubbish night after night and continue to be catered for. Please consider continuing this sublime show in some format.
We have recently discovered In Treatment and enjoyed watching all three series. As psychotherapists, we think it is a very well produced and informative series, stimulating many questions and much discussion about the psychotherapeutic process from different perspectives, including Freudian and Jungian models and the “wounded healer” paradigm. We would welcome a continuation of this quality production.
It is a shame that HBO is not bringing in a 4th season of such excellent acting and directing. I really love this show. I will keep up hopes that someone will see the light and reconsider to give it another opportunity.
I am really disappointed to learn that there will not be a season 4 of the this great series. I do hope that the powers at be reconsider and bring back this wonderful programme.
