HBO has cancelled their Looking TV series after two low-rated seasons. While there won’t be a third season of the gay dramedy, the series will have a resolution.
Looking revolves around three gay friends (Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez, and Murray Bartlett) in San Francisco as they make their way in the world, looking for personal and professional fulfillment. Also starring are Lauren Weedman, Russell Tovey, and Raul Castillo.
The half-hour show debuted in January 2014 to just 338,000 viewers. It was a poor start but viewership grew as the weeks progressed, hitting a season high of 519,000 in week six. Despite the low ratings, HBO renewed Looking for a second season, keeping it as a companion to their low-rated Girls series.
The ratings have gotten even worse in season two. Just 150,000 viewers watched the February 15th installment. Season two averaged 240,000 viewers with a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demo. The finale aired on Sunday.
Now, HBO has decided to cancel the show but plans to wrap up the series with a special. There’s no word on when it will be released as yet.
A statement from the cable channel says, “After two years of following Patrick and his tight-knit group of friends as they explored San Francisco in search of love and lasting relationships, HBO will present the final chapter of their journey as a special… We look forward to sharing this adventure with the shows loyal fans.”
What do you think? Did you like the Looking TV show? Do you think that it should have been cancelled or renewed for a third season? Will you be watching the special?
Sorry to see the series end. Not much on tv for this audience. Took two years for Mash to become a hit, before that dismal ratings. Also Star Trek same thing. At least there will be some kind of closure to the series. “looking” forward to seeing it!
Please bring back Looking on HBO.
This was one of my favourite shows. Great characters. You don’t have to be gay to enjoy it.
I am beyond sad to see it be cancelled in light of the great number of horrible shows on TV that do so well.
Can’t wait for the final special that will hopefully wrap up with grace a series that ended far before its time.
I’m behind the schedule a bit. Just finished streaming the antipenultimate episode. I love watching Jonathan Groff and Russell Tovey together. My heart soars watching them fall in love. My husband looks over at me to tell me that I’m watching with a big smile on my face. I love my husband that way. The actors are wonderful and their commitment to their parts is very strong.
I think it should be renewed because there are not that many gay series out there and i think that LOOKING can relate to some people in life so please renew it please i beg of you!
I agree with Joe and all the others that are sad that LOOKING has come to a end , I really enjoyed the series , I was hooked from the very first episode and found it just by chance as it was advertised on Sky Atlantic , so I recorded the series and was so exited to find there was to be a second series and I just could’nt wait for it to come back , imagine my disapointment when it was anounced there would not be a third series……I just could not believe it , it was so good… Read more »
I just finished the second season and I am really sad that “Looking” is a wrap…I had never heard of it until less then a month ago when I joined the HBO family and subscribed…I watched one episode and by the 3rd I was hooked…all in the same night…The Writting, Acting and Character building was top drawer…I feel like I just lost a handful of friends and good ones at that…sad as hell.
Are u kidding me? this is the best gay reality , i have seen in my entirely life. the script is so good, the actors are really awesome. If in the US there is no audience, in Europe we die for it. Come on, this is real life. you gays do not like it? because it is so complicated. I m glad that i had the privilege in my life, someone to make a script of my gay life. The music is just the cherry on the top of the cake. Gays get welll and support the nice series. Do… Read more »
I feel the same way, Steve. It’s sad LOOKING was cancelled.
We here in South Africa – Johannesburg think this is our daily lives , it is a very good story and think u need to go on with the next season. I had straight people not even going to work for day to watch season 1. This is really what is happening here in South Africa. Nice show people even stop watching day of our lives for this series.
We all here in Switzerland was following the show…We loved that because it was true..gay people live like that.
Please do a 3rd season…pleeeeeeaaaaassssssse
Ive been a loyal fan from season 1! gutted to hear no season 3, we need more dramas like this to portray everyday living in different countries, some parts of the show have been inspirational as well as heart felt and emotional. I will definitely be watching the finale special as so much left untold!!!!
I’m from Australia! A massive fan following down under! We are all shattered!!!! 🙁
I am heartbroken, i loved the show and i have canceled my HBO subscription.
I have been despondent since i heard the news of the cancellation. I am heartbroken i loved the characters and had been a loyal fan since the beginning. I have canceled my subscription to HBO.
Decent first season but second season writing was poor. Cliche city just did not go anywhere and that was bad, because we Loved these guys. The ” analysis ” , they should just drop these for Looking and Girls; the writer and creator clearly thought more of the show than we did. Don”t try to tell us”what we just saw.” Girls this season was just plain dumb!
I am so sad loved the show
