To no surprise, The CW has cancelled their remake of Melrose Place after just one season and 18 episodes.
The new Melrose Place revolves around the same apartment complex as the 1990s original but largely focuses on a new group of characters. The cast includes Katie Cassidy, Stephanie Jacobsen, Jessica Lucas, Michael Rady, Shaun Sipos, Colin Egglesfield, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, Nicholas Gonzalez, Victor Webster, and Brooke Burns. Appearances by actors Thomas Calabro, Laura Leighton, Heather Locklear, Josie Bissett, and Daphne Zuniga help kept ties to the original alive.
In September, despite a lot of promotion, the first episode attracted a small 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.31 million viewers. The numbers fell after that and never came close to even matching the premiere’s. The April 4th episode hit a season low, with a horrific 0.4 rating in the demographic and only .86 million viewers.
Even for The CW, the new Melrose Place’s ratings were absolutely terrible. Though the last episode of the season left many storylines up in the air, there was no way that it was going to be coming back.
Well, the network made it official this week. Melrose Place has been cancelled and won’t be returning for season two.
What do you think? Why didn’t this version catch on? Was it a bad idea from the start? Would it have survived if Heather Locklear signed on at the beginning or was including original characters part of why it failed?

Please bring back Melrose Place. I loved the show and never watched it live. I Tivo’ed it purely because I can’t stand waiting for commercials when I am excited to see what happens next. I’ve been wondering what happened to the show and now I am very disappointed to learn that it has been cancelled. The characters were awesome, storylines were addicting, and all us fans need to know what happens next!!!! Please reconsider and take into account everyone records TV shows and hardly anyone watches live tv anymore.

This really sucks! I can’t believe there’s no season 2 =( I love the mysteries, the suspense, the characters and their hookups and fashion. I got hooked on watching the first season and was eager to watch the 2nd season only to find out that it ends on episode 18.
Melrose Place sucked. There was bad acing, especially from Ashlee Simpson! She should never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever act! She must talk with her real voice! Not this trying to be sexy, but not voice. I hated it the only good actress as Ella, that all!
Tanisha hit the nail on the head. People are DVR-ing and TIVO-ing almost all their regular shows now. The biggest reason is because commercials have gotten even more obnoxious than in years past (who though that would ever be possible?!) and the breaks can be 5-6 minutes long! Forget that, no one cares. Besides, I’ve NEVER been influenced by commercials. They’re a complete waste of airspace (just like Rachael Maddow). Bring back Melrose….i have been searching for the show on my tivo…well now I know why it wansn’t in my list….bring back the show…I NEVER watch a show live…..I only tivo it and watching it when it suits me……..BRING BACK MELSROSE!!!!

I loved the new Melrose Place, and I was one of the people that had to DVR the shows because I worked so late. I really wish they’d give it another shot!! 🙁

It was horrible, dreadful and boring. Unbelievably bad story lines and characters coming from the dead or who had escaped justice by faking their deaths, not one sympathetic character that the audience liked or could identify with. Good riddance. Stick to the first Melrose. It was the best and available on DVD, This one was just a poor imitation of the first.
They also need to keep in mind that many people have a DVR or Tivo now days and those recordings don’t count toward ratings.
Bring back the new Melrose Place! I loved the original Melrose and 90210 and was so excited when they came out with the re-makes. It took me a little bit to get into it but by season 2 I was hooked.
