In July, production on NBC’s Parenthood was delayed due to Maura Tierney becoming ill. She eventually had to drop out of the project and Lauren Graham stepped in.
Because of the backstage issues, NBC delayed Parenthood’s Fall premiere and replaced it with a series that was scheduled for midseason, Mercy. Some wondered if having two new medical series might cause one to suffer. It turns out, Mercy and Trauma are both in critical condition.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The series got off to a mediocre start on September 23, 2009. The premiere attracted a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. That put the debut in fourth place for the demo and in second place for total viewers.
The second episode fell to a 2.1 rating and 7.35 million. The third installment dropped again to a 1.8 rating in the demo and 7.29 million viewers. Not good.
Though the show’s ratings could hardly be called strong, NBC gave Mercy a full season order in October. The rest of the network’s schedule was performing poorly and the order likely had most to do with the fact that NBC just needed original programming. It didn’t hurt that the series is a co-production of NBC’s corporate sister, Universal Media Studios.

Meanwhile, Trauma struggled from the very beginning and NBC pulled the plug after 13 episodes. But then, based on the need for more programming, the network ordered seven more installments. That show returns on March 8th but is a big longshot for renewal.
While Mercy was initially the better performer, the show’s ratings have now reached Trauma-like levels. The most recent episode of Mercy hit a series low with a dismal 1.4 rating in the demo and just 5.86 million viewers.
NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad recently said that she still loves the drama creatively, but she also noted that the show’s ratings need to rise for it to survive. She made that statement before Mercy fell to its most recent low.
The network has commissioned 18 pilots for the 2010-11 season and Bromstad has acknowledged that they’ll have to essentially rebuild their schedule from scratch.
With the ratings as poor as they are, it’s highly likely that Mercy will be cancelled and won’t survive to see a second year.
What do you think? Would you be sorry to see Mercy cancelled? Is it worth watching? Is there a reason that more viewers aren’t tuning in?

i LOVE mercy! it’s just the right amount of medical and drama mixed in one. i tried getting into grey’s anatomy but here was too much blah going on. mercy is currently one of my “have to watch” shows, however i’m a nursing student as well and i have a job, therefore i can’t tune in. honestly, i don’t watch tv on television anymore. i watch them on hulu. i really hope nbc decides to cancel. or at least another stations picks it up.
My husband is in the military and has served in Iraq, and he is also currently a nursing student. We LOVE watching Mercy. He can relate to the episodes and that helps me get into it as well. We weren’t impressed with the first couple of episodes, but we stuck with it and the last few have been much better. There isn’t much on tv these days except for reality shows, and we have grown very fond of Mercy. The show needs to be given a second season to continue to work the kinks out and make it the tv… Read more »
its one of the best shows ever i will cry if it gets cancelled i wanna see if the new ass doctor dates chloe or if sonya find someone or if roni makes it
much better shows than this have been canceled! Is there an unwritten rule that states that there has to be a medical drama on all networks? if so could we at least make it original? this show is nothing more than an E.R. clone mixed with a dash of nurse Jackie. none of the female characters are likable and all sleep around. aren’t they supposed to be three very different character’s? if this show is canceled, you still have reruns of E.R. on T.N.T..
Love this show!!!
I wait for wednesdays because I love this show. Ive never liked a hospital show before this one. Its remarkable and the characters are so believable. The only thing i can think is that people already have there set tv series they follow and if they didnt catch this when it first started then they feel its to late to start now. I would air a special that sums up beginning till now and get people hooked that way. Id do anything because this is the one tv series worth keeping around…. Send a mass text on facebook and twtter… Read more »
I love this show. Please give it a second season!
I LOVE MERCY! I’ve watched it from its pilot premeire in Sept ’09. And Diana is right…with our busy lives now-a-days and the ability to record the shows, and then watch them when WE have time, why aren’t those taken into consideration? I bet NBC that if they could find a way to calculate in all the people that record Mercy that their viewing formula they’d be impressed! PLEASE DONT CANCEL THIS SHOW! I will loose all faith in this network for quality programs if you do. I’ve already boycotted the Tonight Show b/c Leno is back hosting it….please don’t… Read more »
Save it! Honestly I watched the first episode and wasn’t too impressed so I stopped watching it. In February I decided to give it a second chance and now I love it! The last 3 episode have me hooked.

Please don’t cancel Mercy, it is great!
please don’t cancel the show! i love mercy
i love this show! i would be so disappointed if it were to be cancelled!!
I LOVE this show!!! don’t cancel it!!!!! :[
I LOVE MERCY! If NBC cancels this, I will give up on the network altogether. I was very disappointed with them after the O’Brien/Leno incident! Like many others above me, I don’t have time to tune in when the show is on TV, but I watch new episodes on Hulu every weekend! I wish they took THOSE into consideration when they calculate ratings. I mean, come on NBC, this is 2010. The inconvenience of watching shows on YOUR time went out the window when websites like Hulu, CastTv, SideReel, etc. popped up.
I second that one sister!
