As Merlin wraps up its second season on the air in the UK, the cast and crew have received some good news. They’ll be going back to work for a third round of episodes.
Merlin tells the story of the legendary wizard’s early adulthood, living in the court of King Uther, Arthur’s father. The series features Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James as Prince Arthur, Anthony Head as King Uther, Katie McGrath as Morgana, Angel Coulby as Gwen, Richard Wilson as Gaius, and John Hurt as the voice of the Great Dragon.
In the UK, the ratings were strong enough for BBC One to renew Merlin for a second season back in December 2008. Season two began airing in September 2009 and will finish on December 19th. While viewership has dropped a bit, the ratings are high enough for BBC One to greenlight a third season.
In a statement, Controller Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson said, “With its mix of magic, adventure and humour, Merlin is perfect Saturday-evening family television, and we are thrilled that Shine Television will be creating a new series for BBC One. I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures our popular young wizard, and his friends in Camelot, will go on in series three.”

Johnny Capps, Executive Producer of Shine Television (which produces the show), added, “Merlin is ready to burst back onto BBC One with more action, romance and, of course, magic to delight fans of all ages. After the thrilling finale of the current series audiences will be left wondering what happens next — and with so many of Merlin and Arthur’s adventures yet to unfold, we can’t wait to continue the story.”
Unfortunately, it’s still up in the air as to when or if the second or third season of Merlin will be shown in the US. An NBC network spokesperson tells us that the network has yet to make a decision on whether they will air another season. The ratings for season one weren’t very strong so, realistically, the chances don’t look all that good.
If NBC decides to air season two of Merlin, the series probably won’t come back until next summer, at the earliest.
If NBC doesn’t want it, the series could be picked up by another outlet. Or, at the very least, fans will eventually be able to purchase season DVDs. The first season has already been released in the UK and will no doubt be released in the US.
What do you think? Would you like to see NBC air the second and third seasons of Merlin? Would you buy them on DVD?

Hello,
WE love Merlin! We can’t waite to see season 3 on tv. However, if it doesn’t air, we would buy the DVD but I would rather see it on tv. Season 2 still has us sitting on the edge of our seats waiting to see what is going to happen next. It is sad to see only one more episode of season 2 left. What is going to happen to the Dragon?
Bring 3rd season to full circle !
I seemed to be automatically wired for each episode of Merlib even if they are re-runs. I love it. I do hope they follow through with season 3.
I hope NBC airs Merlin. It is a fun show and a family friendly one at that!
PLEASE BRING BACK MERLIN AND SOON!!! WE LOVE THIS SHOW!!!
Sometimes a good show pops up and I enjoy it, well this is one of them and I highly recommend it. I’ve enjoyed the first two episodes so much that I can see big things happening in the near future.
There is great acting all around, solid story lines and it moves fast.
I have viewed seasons 1 and 2, and I am intent upon seeing season 3 .. even if I must search and buy the DVD, if our USA networks do not deem it worthy. In my opinion it is a great series, portraying a multitude of characteristics and values which seem to be hard to find in todays society: these include honor and honesty, integrity, humility, loyalty, duty, perseverance and much more. All of this has been successfully rolled into an attractive and fun family series to watch .. If our providers were more interested in encouraging our people into… Read more »

Season two of Merlin is being aired now of the ScyFi Channel. I hope they will also air season three that has already aired in Britain. I am so looking forward to season three. It looks to be a wonder and exciting season; don’t want to reveal any spoilers here but the Great Dragon appears to have a huge part in the new season. I am impressed by the cg for a TV series and love the Great Dragon voiced by John Hurt a long time favorite actor. For you younger folks who may not be familiar with Hurt, he… Read more »
I would LOVE to see Merlin aired on NBC!! It was one of my favorite shows. I’ve been searching and searching trying to find out when it’ll be back on. If NBC does not bring it back and it doesn’t air on anyother networks, I will definately purchase it.
seriously! please bring it back! i just found it on air about a month ago. watched every episode that has come on yet! i cant believe i have not seen more advertising for this show! add some money to the special effects department and Lancelot would have had a very realistic fight. advertise this show and it will be a HUGE hit! spend money to make money!!! please bring it back!!
Been waiting and waiting to find out when the next episode of Merline will begin. Now I find out it may not air at all. It’s a great show and my family enjoyed it immensely, please bring it back!
