As Merlin wraps up its second season on the air in the UK, the cast and crew have received some good news. They’ll be going back to work for a third round of episodes.
Merlin tells the story of the legendary wizard’s early adulthood, living in the court of King Uther, Arthur’s father. The series features Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James as Prince Arthur, Anthony Head as King Uther, Katie McGrath as Morgana, Angel Coulby as Gwen, Richard Wilson as Gaius, and John Hurt as the voice of the Great Dragon.
In the UK, the ratings were strong enough for BBC One to renew Merlin for a second season back in December 2008. Season two began airing in September 2009 and will finish on December 19th. While viewership has dropped a bit, the ratings are high enough for BBC One to greenlight a third season.
In a statement, Controller Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson said, “With its mix of magic, adventure and humour, Merlin is perfect Saturday-evening family television, and we are thrilled that Shine Television will be creating a new series for BBC One. I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures our popular young wizard, and his friends in Camelot, will go on in series three.”

Johnny Capps, Executive Producer of Shine Television (which produces the show), added, “Merlin is ready to burst back onto BBC One with more action, romance and, of course, magic to delight fans of all ages. After the thrilling finale of the current series audiences will be left wondering what happens next — and with so many of Merlin and Arthur’s adventures yet to unfold, we can’t wait to continue the story.”
Unfortunately, it’s still up in the air as to when or if the second or third season of Merlin will be shown in the US. An NBC network spokesperson tells us that the network has yet to make a decision on whether they will air another season. The ratings for season one weren’t very strong so, realistically, the chances don’t look all that good.
If NBC decides to air season two of Merlin, the series probably won’t come back until next summer, at the earliest.
If NBC doesn’t want it, the series could be picked up by another outlet. Or, at the very least, fans will eventually be able to purchase season DVDs. The first season has already been released in the UK and will no doubt be released in the US.
What do you think? Would you like to see NBC air the second and third seasons of Merlin? Would you buy them on DVD?

Yes, Merlin was a very well done series… it figures, as I just discovered it was BBC and not an American production. We looked forward to each episode. I sincerely hope that NBC will present season 2 this year.
im just glad that bbc still airs it stupid america wy dont we all move to britan where there are good shows on and not all this crap on all the time.
I am from Canada and I wish they would bring back Merlin here as well…I watched all of Season 2 on-line…but I would prefer to see it on TV or buy the DVD or Blue ray…I can’t wait to see Season 3. This is in fact the most interesting show in all of North America…I agree…I am sick and tired of reality show…you see one, you see them all…its all the same crappy story….what a waste of airtime.
rue dat
YES BEEN WAITING !!!! Please bring it back to the US and fast!!!!!
They better bring it to the U.S.! First decent show that is different from all the rest. Lets spice it up a bit shall we?! Its a good show and who cares if it isn’t completely accurate. I mean, it is a TV show after all and not a documentary! It’s sole purpose is to entertain.
Very good show with an excellent cast. Hope to see it back here soon!
Please bring Merlin back for another season! I do not like reality shows so this is a nice change. It is also something that I can watch and not be afraid of my 4 year old son walking in the room and seeing it. Many shows in primetime are not family oriented.
NBS used to be the network to watch with it’s Thursday night “Must See TV” now there isn’t a show I can tolerate. Merlin however is a joy to watch. I love the show. If NBC cancels Merlin then it is obvious that it almost got the pulse of the television viewing audience then lost it. I will be buying the DVD’s if I have to and never give NBC another chance to become involved with a series only to have them cancel it!
No me lo puedo creer!!! I want other season!!!! Soy de Espa
I love this show so much that I’ve watched it on internet. I couldn’t wait for US TV start showing it. The second season was awesome. loved it even more that the first one. can’t wait to see the third season. 🙂
Merlin will not start filming season 3 until March, from what I have read on the internet. Then Merlin Season 3 will not be shown until Sept. 2010 The last show, Season 2, 13 was shown in Dec… so we have to wait 9 months for the next season to start. :0( It is like waiting on a sweet baby to be born… I have to agree, I am sick and tired of all these ‘reality’ shows that are on. My family hardly watch TV since there is so much garbage that it is not worth watching anymore. We are… Read more »

sure i’ll buy and plz continue with a new season of Merlin. I love the show very much.Plz send out the DVD to Malaysia too.Me sure will buy it.
I’ve watched the entire season 2 online. If NBC shows it I will again watch an NBC program. At this point they have NOTHING that I’m interested in watching. They seem to be replaying the same tired old formulas and don’t or won’t think of showing anything different. It’s no wonder they are in the bottom of the network ratings. I watch TV to be entertained and Merlin does that with 5 stars. I have never before been so captivated by a TV program. Never before have I been involved with “fan stuff”. Now I’m online at fan sites and… Read more »
Please continue with a new season of Merlin. I like this show very much. I do like fantasy type programs and movies. I am very tired of seeing a lot of the new programs reality type shows, I am NOT interested in these type of programs at all.
