As Merlin wraps up its second season on the air in the UK, the cast and crew have received some good news. They’ll be going back to work for a third round of episodes.
Merlin tells the story of the legendary wizard’s early adulthood, living in the court of King Uther, Arthur’s father. The series features Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James as Prince Arthur, Anthony Head as King Uther, Katie McGrath as Morgana, Angel Coulby as Gwen, Richard Wilson as Gaius, and John Hurt as the voice of the Great Dragon.
In the UK, the ratings were strong enough for BBC One to renew Merlin for a second season back in December 2008. Season two began airing in September 2009 and will finish on December 19th. While viewership has dropped a bit, the ratings are high enough for BBC One to greenlight a third season.
In a statement, Controller Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson said, “With its mix of magic, adventure and humour, Merlin is perfect Saturday-evening family television, and we are thrilled that Shine Television will be creating a new series for BBC One. I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures our popular young wizard, and his friends in Camelot, will go on in series three.”

Johnny Capps, Executive Producer of Shine Television (which produces the show), added, “Merlin is ready to burst back onto BBC One with more action, romance and, of course, magic to delight fans of all ages. After the thrilling finale of the current series audiences will be left wondering what happens next — and with so many of Merlin and Arthur’s adventures yet to unfold, we can’t wait to continue the story.”
Unfortunately, it’s still up in the air as to when or if the second or third season of Merlin will be shown in the US. An NBC network spokesperson tells us that the network has yet to make a decision on whether they will air another season. The ratings for season one weren’t very strong so, realistically, the chances don’t look all that good.
If NBC decides to air season two of Merlin, the series probably won’t come back until next summer, at the earliest.
If NBC doesn’t want it, the series could be picked up by another outlet. Or, at the very least, fans will eventually be able to purchase season DVDs. The first season has already been released in the UK and will no doubt be released in the US.
What do you think? Would you like to see NBC air the second and third seasons of Merlin? Would you buy them on DVD?

Fabulous show and I have already ordered the DVD of season one. Cannot wait for season two to play in the US.
Hells yes! I love this show! I’m into to all those shows(or was) like Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, Mentalist, Supernatural, etc. . . the strange, magical world of somewhere else or some era else in this case. PLEASE! My friends are not going to watch the show otherwise and it’s an amazing show. Angel, Colin, Bradley, and the rest of the cast are great actors. Their talents showed be shared! Hundred times yes to bringing to NBC!
NBC please air the third season of Merlin! My husband and numerous friends love this show!!!!
Thanks!!!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE…. someone network out there, pick this up! I too get tired of having to find it on youtube. Though I am very thankful to the people that upload it on there, so that those of us here in the States can enjoy the AMAZING show that is MERLIN!!!
NBC – PLEASE bring back Merlin for season 2!!!! It is great quality storytelling for people with more brains than gonads. It reminds me of watching “The Wonderful World of Disney” on Sunday nights with my family, except now I’m a mom of a curious 8 yr old daughter who LOVES good stories and is tired of the Disney laugh tracks and tired scripts and teenage back-talk. NBC, do yourselves a favor and return this jewel to your lineup!!!!!!!
Well, i cant wait for season 3 of Merlin will retun back.
hello,
l’m a fan, l do enjoy ur film l just wanna know if merlin season 3 is out in the stores.
i do believe that arthur and gwen will be together.
This is a great family show. Something there aren’t enough of. Definitely, bring it back.
KEEP IT!! Bring it back. Now that NBC has fixed the Jay Leno mistake it has some room for a diverse line of programing. This is a super show that was on in an odd time slot. If 92% of the voters say they enjoyed it so much they would buy the DVD, doesnt that tell the netwoks somthing? Or do they not listen to us. I am really beginning to wonder who advises NBC. They have cancelled most of thier good shows. There is very little reason to watch them nay more. . The BBC has a much better… Read more »
I loved the show, I have been trying to find out information on it since it stopped airing. Please air quality family programming like Merlin…
YES!! AIR IT IN AMERICA! I’m so freaking sick of finding it on megavideo every. single. week.
I can’t believe that they haven’t aired Merlin season 2, because we really need another dose of 90210 (it so acuraely reflects what goes on in this country today ha ha!) Or better yet another reality TV show or more supernatural cops ;-? Give me a break, it was nice to have a show that took place in a time when people actually acted like human beings. That’s probably why they won’t air it (too human)
I look forward to third season. Please..
Glad they are making a season 3.
I hope they will air it here. I’ve been hoping it would be out on DVD in the states. No such luck….yet. Glad they are making a season 3. Too many good shows get canceled too soon. So I’m glad to hear good news in this case : )
If you are an Stargate Atlantis fan there is still a campaign to get a movie — which while several were promised, none have even started production. Despite it’s 5 seasons, it was canceled far before it’s time. : (
