In the fall, Anna Faris left Mom, and now, the long-running sitcom is leaving CBS. The network has announced that the comedy series is ending and that the series finale will air on Thursday, May 6th.
The Mom TV series stars Allison Janney, Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, William Fichtner, and Kristen Johnston. Recovering addict Bonnie (Janney) must learn to adjust to life without her daughter and former-roommate, Christy (Faris), around. With a chaotic past behind her and a newly empty nest, Bonnie focuses on her marriage to her husband, Adam (Fichtner), and on what she wants to be now that she’s finally grown up. Now more than ever, Bonnie depends on the support of her friends, including wise Marjorie (Kennedy), wealthy and sometimes misguided Jill (Pressly), overly emotional Wendy (Hall), and her foster sister, Tammy (Johnston), who was recently released from prison. Through it all, these women help each other overcome their mistakes and stay sober in the face of whatever life throws their way.
The eighth season of Mom averages a 0.62 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.07 million viewers. Compared to season seven, that’s down by 22% in the demo and down by 19% in viewership. Seven episodes have aired thus far.
Season eight marks the final year in a two-season renewal from CBS and marks the end of star Janney’s current contract. Despite Faris’ departure, the sitcom still does well for CBS and is the network’s fourth-highest rated comedy.
“For the past eight years, we’ve had the great honor to bring these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of viewers every week,” said executive producers Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker, and Nick Bakay in a statement. “From the beginning, we set out to tell stories about recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a network comedy series. Whether it was the emotional reactions of the live audience on tape night inside Stage 20, or discussions at the White House regarding the opioid crisis, or the personal stories we continue to receive on social media, we take great pride in knowing Mom has positively impacted so many lives. We are forever grateful to our brilliant cast and guest stars, wonderful writers, and amazing crew for going on this journey with us.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Mom TV series? Would you have watched a ninth season or, is it time to say goodbye?
Yes I would watch season 9 10 1 & so on. People 18-49 are not those who watch Truly great shows. Like after 49 we stop watching No! This show was about addiction with outstanding actors and great story line. To show how friendships are built to support each other good and bad. This was a great family show as many families deal with addiction. Adam added laughter and cbs simply doesn’t value the watchers. 4Th in their lineup is more than good enough. These women did not want to end it not like they were making $300 K an… Read more »
yes I would have watched a 9th season of mom. I personally think they should have recast christy’s character. I think Kelly Staples would have been a good choice. I don’t know if I got her name right she was on 2 1/2 men playing Alan’s receptionist/girlfriend.
While I am disappointed to hear about the network’s decision to ax MOM–a show I really like–I can’t say I blame them–for the show has strayed far from the reason for its name. And the onus for saving the show for a 9th+ season lies with Chuck Lorre and the writers, not just the letter-writing people. While most of the focus of Mom has been on middle-aged ladies with substance-abuse issues, the reason for its name is because its central characters are a bunch of moms–specifically, a single matri-lineal family tree of single moms and their love-daughters: Bonnie, Christy, Violet,… Read more »
What is wrong with CBS ???? Love this show thought it was just as good this year with an all around great cast so bummed. Just have to quit watching cbs they always seem to be great for cancelling great ones like this.
I am so sad this show is ending.. what is this network thinking??? Since Chrissy left the series I’m still watching. I’m sure this show has impacted many people’s lives, the struggle with addiction this has been one of my favorite shows from the start, I’m so sorry it has been cancelled. The cast is funny, I loved this show.
I’m so sorry to hear this great show is ending. I’ve been a fan from Day One. All I can say is “MOM” gets better and better with each season. I’m a 76 great grandmother who totally enjoys the laughter this show brings as well as the tears of the dark side of addiction. That’s life and the cast has delivered and wonderful show.
What a shame. A great show even without Anna Faris (shame on her for bailing; being the lead on a hit TV show is such a rarity and gift in Hollywood; guess she thought she was above this). Fantastic stories, fascinating characters who truly grew and developed over the years. I suspect that a healthy dose of AGEISM was involved. No young-uns shaking their cleavage around so CBS gave the show the heave-ho. Too bad. So few shows honoring and respecting mature Americans. BRING BACK THE GOLDEN GIRLS!
Just watch repeats of The Golden girls for they can not bring back a show that would not work without these four women.
I love this series! It’s still great without Anna Faris’ character. I love every one of the characters and laugh out loud with each episode! The writing is excellent and it is my favorite show!! Please reconsider canceling this series!
I have still been enjoying “Mom” without Anna Faris. Maybe it’s because I relate more to the older characters who are closer to my generation in age and life experiences. I surely will miss the show when it goes off air.
I love mom…needs to stay on…wish it hadn’t been cancelled!!!!!
Mom was over the day Anna left
Tried it….but don’t like it without Anna Farris….
Mom is a wonderful laugh out loud comedy with heart. I’m so disappointed it’s cancelled !!! I would have watched season 9, 10 … and beyond.

Ever!! This was true comedy, gave me a chuckle which we see rarely on TV now….—I will miss it dearly!! I watched from season #1 to the latest , over & over ! Gosh!! When you have a true hit, why cancel??
Enjoy this series!
yes- would have definitely watched a 9th season. Am sorry to see it go.
