Remember the defective detective? Recently, Monk star Tony Shalhoub spoke with the AV Club about his experience on the USA Network series.
Created by Andy Breckman, the comic-drama starred Shalhoub as Adrian Monk, a private detective with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. The cast also included Bitty Schram, Jason Gray-Stanford, and Ted Levine. The series ran for eight seasons before ending in 2009.
In the interview, Shalhoub said Monk was originally set at ABC:
That was at a time, when we first started that, when there were some big changes going on at USA. Kind of a changing of the guard, if you will, but they were in the process of rebranding their network, and the show happened to be a part of that rebranding. The script and the pilot had originally been at ABC. I think that’s kind of common knowledge. But it started at ABC, and they couldn’t quite get the right people involved there, so it kind of languished there for a number of years. And then one executive leaving ABC and going over to USA asked to take it over there and see if they could make it work. And then it came to me, and—well, again, it was a life-changing opportunity, and I feel so grateful that I had it, because it was an enormous amount of fun.”
He added that he didn’t know about the series finale twist until a few weeks before:
I honestly didn’t know ’til a few weeks before I got that final two-parter. I didn’t honestly know if they were going to maybe kill me off. That idea was always floating there in the ether. Again, it was one of those situations where I didn’t press them to tell me. I was willing to go with whatever they felt was best. But I’m glad it came out the way it did.”
Shalhoub also said he wouldn’t turn down a Monk movie in the future:
That does get bandied about now and then. It’s not really up to me, but, yeah, I never say never. It was a fun character to work on.”
What do you think? Did you watch Monk? Would you watch a Monk movie?
I just discovered “Monk” reruns about 6 months ago, and I’m totally addicted. I LOVE THIS SHOW!! Make a movie, have a reunion on TV, Start the series again!!!! Definitely include Sharona and Natalie botb!
With all his problems other characters show him respect and kindness. This is a wonder example for people to remember.Rediscovered the show this summer. Wonderful acting by all, especially by Tony (former teacher).
Would love, love, love a monk movie!!!
I love every rerun of Monk and would go to see a movie in a heartbeat
I would love love love, them to bring back the original series will all the original characters including Natalie and Sharona, who now would be married to Disher! I was MONK every day on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, then on the weekend via on Demand
Need to change that to Monk: Made for TV Movie.
I love the show I’m watching it on Hallmark every day I would love to see a reunion movie or a reboot of the show they seem to be doing that these days they can’t find the quality of shows they have had in the past.
Please make a new series with all of the original characters. Sharona and natalie. Also, i would love to see a movie. We watched all the shows and now we watch all of the reruns on hallmark. You cant pass up on a great series.
I watched and re watched every Monk episode. Now suffering serious Monk withdrawal. It was humor and serious drama, which Tony Shalhoub did both perfectly. He made you feel so for this man so injured by his wife’s death, by a horrible childhood, with a horrible father who then abandoned the family. But the characters also grew during the series. Oh, how I miss this series and hope for a special or two and a movie.
I would watch a Monk movie if Bitty Schram played Sharona. She was light years better than Traylor Howard.
I would love to see a movie about Monk. I loved the series and as a matter of fact I have been watching the reruns.
You bet I would watch a Monk movie! Go for it!
I would love love love to see a Monk movie. I love watching the series and wish it could return to TV! A positive, quirky, intelligent and well-written (and acted) show that all could watch!
I absolutely love this show. Yes, yes yes to a movie!!!
Please make Monk movies…..with Tony of course..the Perry Mason movies were welcomed ….so will Monk…….just like Raymond Burr was Perry Mason ..Tony Shalhoub will always be Monk..
I would absolutely go to a “Monk” movie. I loved the show! Now watching the reruns.
