It’s farewell to Murphy Brown, for a second time. The revival of the long-running CBS sitcom from the 1990’s has been been cancelled. There won’t be a 12th season — unless there’s another revival some day in the future.
Murphy Brown stars original cast members Candice Bergen, Grant Shaud, Faith Ford, and Joe Regalbuto, alongside Nik Dodani, Jake McDorman, Adan Rocha, and Tyne Daly. Amidst daily attacks on the press, Murphy Brown (Bergen) decides to forsake retirement for a new CNC morning show, Murphy in the Morning. She reunites the old FYI gang, Corky Sherwood (Ford), Frank Fontana (Regalbuto), and Miles Silverberg (Shaud) for her new endeavor, as well as social media director Pat Patel (Dodani). She’s determined to prioritize solid reporting over sensationalism. The team members still decompress at Phil’s bar, which is now run by his sister, Phyllis (Daly), with help from college student, Miguel (Rocha), a “Dreamer” from Mexico. Meanwhile, Murphy’s son, Avery (McDorman), is all grown up and following (perhaps, a bit too closely) in mom’s footsteps.
The 11th season of Murphy Brown averaged a 0.83 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.07 million viewers.
Out of the 26 scripted CBS TV shows of the 2018-19 season, Murphy Brown is in 14th place in the demo and 14th place in total viewership.
What do you think? Did you enjoy the Murphy Brown TV show on CBS? Are you sorry that it’s been cancelled? Would you have watched a 12th season?
Last season didn’t live up to the earlier seasons. I watched diligently the first run, but I stopped watching partway through last season.
We watched and loved the original Murphy Brown and loved and watched the new one! Sorry to hear it’s been cancelled….not surprised, but still saddened!
I like Murphy Brown and would enjoy more seasons! Another revival needs to happen.
I would have liked it to continue for more seasons
That show was awful… so I’m glad it’s canceled…. If they got rid of Roseanne for her comments then yes this one should have been axed as well!
Roseanne wasn’t axed because of the content of her show, which just got renamed as The Connors. She was axed because of offensive comments made in her personal life. I don’t recall ever reading about Candace Bergen firing off any racist tweets.
I wish they brought it back. I loved their honest look at today’s politics.
I loved Murphy Brown from episode one and have always been a big fan of Candice Bergen, but her father and his little friend Charlie scared the crap out of me as a small child. It’s too bad it got cancelled, it is sad that being in 14th place out of 26 wasn’t enough to save the show. It was good to see all my old friends one last time. 🙁
I’m a little surprised that Murphy was canceled but it didn’t really have the same punch or pizzazz as the original. I’m sorry to see it go.
Wow! People aren’t excited about watching hate filled “progressive” rants against people who get up everyday & make this country work. Who’d of thought it!
I would have watched another season.
I’m really disappointed that this is not coming back. It was a splash of clean water on the TV waves. We always looked forward to it. There are so few intelligent, articulate examples of good writing these days. Candice is a jewel at delivering the witty lines. It also was a favorite of my friends over 60 years old; I guess that demographic doesn’t count, as usual.
Who knew that making every other joke about Trump would alienate half the potential audience? Great decision making CBS!!! Now if Will and Grace can get cancelled…
Ok, but in that case don’t ever call anyone else a “snowflake” as your side is prone to do. If you support Trump, who insults all day, every day, but find television shows making jokes at the expense of the President (which has happening as long as television has been a thing), you should be asking yourself a few questions. I’m obviously not a Trump supporter, but I don’t lose my mind about Tim Allen’s show constantly mocking the left. It’s not that hard to not take it so seriously. And if you do, there’s a real easy solution: change… Read more »
Really Tom? Who made fun all the time about the last golfing vacationer?
Telling jokes about a guy that lies all day long and everyday plus insults and is famous of name calling is funny. I’m glad to see that Will & Grace is coming back for another season. p. s. you notice that I didn’t call him president because I will NEVER call him president
And I didn’t call the last jerk president either… At least this PRESIDENT is doing something for THIS country!
I totally agree. They should just put those shows on CNN!
The revival was an superb coda to the original series, and certainly they did a better job than WILL AND GRACE to justify the series’ revival. It was probably not a good match with MOM as a lead-in, which is probably why viewership was only average. Considering that most of CBS’ comedy slate next season will be new series, it doesn’t make sense to me to not retain something that would at least maintain ratings and which would certainly deliver another season’s worth of excellent episodes. This is easily the hardest cancellation of the season for me.
I didn’t think it was that bad. The original cast did a great job. It was fun seeing them together again. CBS should have given it one more season.
I could see this stinker coming back in 2020, just in time for the election.
I would absolutely love watching Murphy Brown’s coverage of the 2020 election. It would be comedy gold.
