After struggling for years in the ratings, it seems that NBC is really starting to turn things around. Of course, they still have their challenges. Which NBC TV shows will be cancelled and which will be renewed? Stay tuned!
NBC shows this season (so far): A to Z, About a Boy, AD: The Bible Continues: Allegiance, America’s Got Talent, American Ninja Warrior, American Odyssey, Aquarius, Bad Judge, The Biggest Loser, The Blacklist, The Celebrity Apprentice, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Constantine, Dateline, Dateline Saturday Night Mystery, Grimm, Hannibal, Hollywood Game Night, I Can Do That, The Island, Last Comic Standing, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Marry Me, Mr. Robinson, The Mysteries of Laura, The Night Shift, One Big Happy, Parenthood, Parks and Recreation, Running Wild with Bear Grylls, The Sing-Off, The Slap, State of Affairs, Undateable, The Voice, and Welcome to Sweden.
There’s lots of data that NBC looks at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but the ratings are typically the biggest piece. Here’s how the network’s shows are doing.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also see them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Which shows are you rooting for? Which one isn’t as big a hit as you thought? Are you hoping any series will get cancelled to make way for something else?
Would be a huge mistake to cancel state of affairs. Relevant and current story line and good cast. Chemistry between Charlie and nick a real draw…don’t kill him!
I love NBC’s Grimm and Constantine – two shows I look forward to every week. (I also love the Blacklist and SVU), but Grimm and Constantine are my 2 favorite on the network! I certainly hope they do not cancel Constantine! I would be so sad.
Hopefully you are also tracking when these shows are being watched on line as many young people and older adults watch via the internet; otherwise you are not getting a true rating. Many advertisers also put their ads on first before the episode starts online and during breaks throughout the show just like on TV.
blacklist great show….
so in the fall will NBC dramas be SVU, Blacklist ( which will move from DC to Chicago) Chicago Fire, PD, Med, Law, City Hall. All of which will have several crossover episodes with each other and SVU. Their comedies will be Chicago Superstore, Chicago Family, It’s Always Windy in Chicago. About a Chicago Kid, Two Guys a Girl and Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, CBS is CSI and NCIS clones and NBC is Chicago this and that clones. No wonder ratings are low and going lower. Whether shows are good or not doesn’t matter, they appeal to the exact same… Read more »
Nemo, I agree on overkill. However, I like Chicago Fire but NOT Chicago PD so I don’t watch that. I didn’t watch ALL the L&O series either, preferring Criminal Intent over the others. Some are better than others with better characters and storylines. Not everyone that watches ONE will watch ALL. However, network execs tend to think fans will.
I understand not every version of a “clone” appeals to everyone. but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was over 70 percent. so it is mostly the same demo, maybe. If it’s not, then it is a turn off because people are sick of chicgo or ncis everything and they get nothing. I don;t see how chicago or ncis everything is a draw. You get the same demo or less. Then something different comes along like Murder and Empire, and they get great ratings.
Loved A to Z. It never had a chance. Imagine if they cancelled Cheers or Seinfeld after their initial ratings. What a waste to create an entertaining show and not promoting it. It wasn’t racy or sexy enough for viewers and it’s difficult to success after 10 episodes.
‘State of Affairs’ is a winner in my, and my family’s, book! We hope that more people discover its captivating plots, that leave you wanting more! True, the story line has moved pretty fast in the past shows, so that you have to watch it several times to get all of what is going on, but it doesn’t taint the actors and stories goals to give the audience a Real show.
LOVE Grimm!!!
I love Grimm’s! Not a fan of Constantine nor dateline. Grimm’s is fun fantasy to watch and forget the worries of the day. Dateline is disturbing and it feels like back to back hours of horrible real life stories. Why can’t there be some positive stories on dateline, about hope? Never happens!
Grimm is awesome!! Beat show on cable tv.
I think State of Affairs is now showing some potential and if the new plots are true to the ads, could pick up viewers. The problem it could face is losing viewers early as it tried to launch itself, but now that “Charlie’s” recall has returned, seems we’ve got some snakes in the pit! Hard to recapture viewers once they’re gone, but I’ll keep watching, hoping we have something other than a fantasyland series thrust upon us.
please bring crisis that show was so goo I do not understand how people did not like it
We are all enjoying bad judge so much so that we signed up for an online movie streaming service to watch re-runs and share the show with friends. The entire cast is sharp witted! Find the judge a new home!!
Whoa state of affairs didn’t do well, half the audience left.
“A to Z” is a very funny and sweet show. The problem is the lead in show is “Bad Judge” which is horrible. If they moved A to Z to a better spot it would do much better and gain more of a following. I don’t know how NBC makes such poor scheduling decisions. Check this show out while you can because NBC isn’t smart enough to move it and save it.
