In 2009, both Southland and Medium were cancelled by NBC but were then saved by other networks. Three long-running shows were recently cancelled last month and it looked like each had a good shot of being saved as well.
A couple weeks later, Law & Order and Ghost Whisperer have been denied a second chance and now, The New Adventures of Old Christine has as well.
The New Adventures of Old Christine follows a neurotic single mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) who has a hard time juggling a relationship with responsibilities at home and work. Others in the cast include Hamish Linklater, Wanda Sykes, Trevor Gagnon, Clark Gregg, Emily Rutherfurd, Tricia O’Kelley, and Alex Kapp Horner.
The sitcom has been a moderate performer for CBS from the beginning and has ended up on the bubble each year. For the past two years, ABC has been ready to pick up the show if CBS dropped it. Those were in the days when ABC wasn’t having much luck finding successful sitcoms of their own.
When CBS cancelled Old Christine this year, the alphabet network wasn’t as interested anymore because ABC already has some successful sitcoms with several new ones waiting in the wings.
This season, Old Christine aired opposite ABC sitcoms and didn’t fare very well. As a result, the network has decided not to pick up the Julia Louis-Dreyfus sitcom for season six.
The final episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine aired on May 12th on CBS. After five seasons and 88 episodes, there won’t be a final episode to wrap up the series.
On the positive side, reruns will begin airing on Lifetime and on local stations across the country in the fall.
What do you think? Should ABC have picked up Old Christine for season six? How would you have ended the show?

I am sick and tired of falling in love with a show and having to delete awesome shows to be taped in the future on my DVR because some MORON who sits in an overpriced chair thinks he knows what America wants to watch. GUESS WHAT!!! You obviously have no clue. You’ll keep Charlie Sheen, yes TWO AND A HALF MEN is a great show, but lets face it, Charlie is a SCREW UP and a mess. My husband and I loved watching CHristine together every week and were so glad to see Julia Louise Dreyfuss back and doing what… Read more »
And making men everywhere aroused!
I remember the last time we had to come to the rescue! Again, I have no clue why a show that is consistently enjoyable (not to mention hysterically funny) and has a cast that is amazing would be cancelled. I consider it a big mistake, and I will miss it enormously…always there with a laugh for the viewers to enjoy!
This is one of the best comedies on television and I never thought it wouold be cancelled. Shame on you CBS!!! I hope some other channel picks up this wonderful, well-written show.
I can’t believe this show is being cancelled. It has great writing, great characters, and makes me laugh outloud! I agree with other viewers I am also so tired of reality shows…the reality is people need the option of being able to watch a humorous sitcom with talented, gifted actors. What happened to shows that the humorous comments actually makes a person think. I think some other channel should have the smarts to pick this show up. The sad part is a person likes a show and they keep moving it so much you cannot even find it. Save this… Read more »
I am so upset! I loved this show. I laughed out loud every week. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING!
Are you kidding me? Shame on you CBS! A witty and wonderful show with an incredibly talented cast – I’m giving up on television. COUGAR TOWN? REALLY?
Seriously??? How many reality and medical shows can this world take?? What happened to good old fashioned…..wait for it…. LAUGHING? Funny shows, remember? The people in charge are, obviously uptight and don’t know what funny is. …guess I’ll go back to watching the contestants on “survivor” win an overnight trip with food and a shower. Ugh.
So disappointing that they cancelled New Adventures! We LOVED this show. It was so funny, but also had a point through the humor. It was smart and the entire cast was amazing. I agree that Cougar Town could have easily been replaced by this show!! I don’t see it lasting very long as soon as the “trend” of watching it wears off. It couldn’t even compare to New Adventures! So frustrating to see a great show being cancelled!
I can’t believe CBS would cancel this hilarious show!! What are they thinking?? Who was athe moron who made that decision? I look forward every night to watch the reruns. We actually eat dinner watching them!! Maybe Fox will pick it up. Please!!!!
Are you kidding me, they cancelled New Christine. It was one of the funniest shows on network TV. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss is an exceptional talent and comedienne. I wonder if the network heads who make these decisions ever actually watch the shows. If they did, they would not have cancelled this show. The comedy was smart, sophisticated and just damn funny. It filled the void left when Frasier went off the air. I am sorry to see it go.
I just started watching this show as I bought the Boxsets for season 1 & 2 and it is clearly a very funny show. My wife and I have now banned network TV in the wake of cancellations to The Unit(CBS), FlashForward(ABC), Ghost Whisperer(CBS) and a host of others. I think most people now have no faith in the networks and will not bother watching a show live fearing it’s cancellation. This just gives more chances to the HBO programming, the internet and God forbid spending more time with our families.
New Christine was a great show! I hate that it has been cancelled…what are they thinking? Now I am down to Modern Family …
You took off one of only good programs on network TV. You should correct your error.
I think the people that are in charge of the programming and scheduling are failing the viewing public. Go back to the 80’s when everyone know the timeslots of these very valuable shows. We are all sick of the reality crap and need to get back to laughing. Mostly we need to know when this programming is cast. Like back in the 80’s everyone new that Thursday 8 was Cosby or Friends or Seinfeld. The new Adventures of old Christine is funny comedy and we need more of that and less reality TV or crime related crap that we don’t… Read more »
I am so sad New Adventures of Old Christine wasn’t picked up…it is such a great show. ABC should slide it into Cougartown’s slot, as I can’t belived anyone watches it. What a great night of television with Modern Family and Christine. CBS made the mistake of moving Christine too many times. What a loss!! One of the best comedies on TV. Julia deserves the Emmy.
