The peacock network is announcing today that the eight-year-old soap Passions has been cancelled. This comes as a shock to some but the writing has been on the wall for awhile. Still, things may not be as grim as they may seem.
Passions debuted on July 5, 1999 and was created by Jim Reilly, a writer from Days of Our Lives. Reilly is the head writer on the soap and is an executive producer with Lisa de Cazotte. The supernatural sudser takes place in fictional New England town Harmony and replaced the long-running Another World. Now it looks like Passions will be replaced itself.
The soap has been in danger for quite some time. When NBC renewed the series in May 2006, the network renewed it only for one year and required significant budget cuts. As a result, $4-5 million was slashed from the yearly budget and caused several crewmembers and performers to be let go. Now, nearly a year later, NBC has cancelled the soap. Why?
NBC recently announced that they would be expanding the popular Today Show from three to four hours weekdays. The Today Show is a great cash-earner for NBC and has been around for 55 years. The cast, including Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry and Al Roker, is scheduled to hold a news conference today at the Television Critics Association (TCA) winter preview tour to announce the news show expansion.
That “super-sized” version of Today will leave NBC affiliates with one less hour in their mid-morning slot. To compensate, NBC is releasing the Passions timeslot to affiliates. As a result, Passions will be pulled — though not for awhile.
The present Passions contract runs out in June but the new expanded Today won’t debut until Fall 2007. To fill the summer months, NBC is expected to negotiate with the Passions cast and show creatives to extend the soap until August. That could be the end.
But, like Tabitha and any good soap fan knows, there are always possible ways to cheat death. How could Passions survive?
NBC is proud of the soap. As recent as last week, the network issued a press release touting the fact that Passions was fourth in the ratings for all soaps in the very desirable female 18-34 demographic. Passions even tied for first place (with Days of Our Lives) for that demographic for the first week in January. As well, NBC owns Passions completely, allowing the network to keep all profits.
Because of its strong popularity with young women, there are rumblings that NBC may try to keep the series alive elsewhere. Possibilities include producing the soap (perhaps in a shortened version) for Disney’s SoapNet cable station, the struggling MyNetwork TV or even on the Internet.
The soap won’t go off the air for several months so we probably won’t know what the future holds for Passions and the Harmony residents for quite some time.
What do you think? We know there are lots of Passions fans out there. Would you like to see the soap continue? If so, consider signing our petition (leave a comment) so NBC and Passions executive producers Jim Reilly and Lisa de Cazotte will know how you feel. We’ll keep you posted on any new developments. Stay tuned — and in the meantime, let’s save Passions!
Please note, due to the overwhelming response, 4,500 petition comments have been archived (for bandwidth issues).

We, the undersigned have enjoyed much of your programming, particularly the ongoing Passions series. We have enjoyed the stories and the work of the cast each week and are dismayed about the announced cancellation.
We believe that the ratings have not accurately shown the show’s popularity and potential for future revenue.
We respectfully request that you reconsider your decision to cancel Passions and to find a way to keep it on NBC daytime. If that is not possible, we implore you to find another venue to continue telling the engaging stories of the people of Harmony.
Thank you in advance for your attention and consideration.
The Undersigned fans of Passions
Please do not cancel Passions. Have been watching soaps since the early 1950’s & this one is the best ever. Don’t know where they come up with the statistics that no one is watching it. Don’t know what I’ll do when it goes to Direct-TV – can’t get it. Cable only.
you can’t take off passions I have been watching that show since the beggining. I LOVE IT.
Passions is a great show. My family has watched it since the very beginning..and we are really upset to see it leave NBC.

I’ve been watching Passions since the show first aired and I would be so sad to see the show end. I look forward to watching it everyday…it’s so bad that my friends make fun of me because I love it so much 🙂 Seriously, isn’t 3 hours of The Today Show enough? Why does any 1 TV show need to be on for 4 hours??? Please don’t take Passions away!
well first off let me start off by saying that i think taking passions off the air is a travisty. like my mother may she rest in peace, and many just like her i am a die hard soap fan.i have been watching passions since it first aired.when im at work i have my wife record it. it’s crazy because i got my wife into watching it. and a couple of my other friends.passions touch on so many real life issues. like being funny. happy, sad, loved. and so much more.so please for all the loyal passions fans dont cancelle the… Read more »

thanks.
Bibi.
I have watched Passions since the very first episode and I can’t imagine not being able to watch it any longer. Now that I work during the day I DVR it so that I can watch it when I get home. Why would you take it off the air for TODAY….seriously, is there not enough news/talkshows on the air as it is. Passions, as well as other daytime television shows, help us to remove ourselves from our lives and become a part of a totally different world, even if it is just for an hour everyday. SOme of us need… Read more »
please dont cancel passions i love this show i got my husband into it and even my two boys ages 2 and 4 love this show and know all the characters. its the only soap i watch and i look forward to it everyday.
Please don’t let this series go. I bought a $100 color tv no bigger than a wallet so I can watch it at the Doctors Office. I started watching on the Scifi Channel about a year ago (it was the very first episodes) and I got hooked, then they took it off. Now your gonna do it to me again. Please don’t.
I don’t get Directtv, I get Dish network…please leave Passions on NBC…I think the fans should go on strike and not watch anything on NBC ever again until Passions gets put back on for good. 🙂
I love Passions, It is the only soap I watch aside from The Young and The Restless. I record Passions and I always look forward to coming home so I can see my Passions. My world is wrecked when Passions is not recorded due to some fluke accident. I dont know what I will do when this show leaves the air. Adding an hour to the today show is not a good enough reason to take away my favorite soap opera. IM MAD!!!! and sad
PLEASE DO NOT CANCELL PASSIONS!!!! I LOVE THE SHOW!!! IT IS ONE OF THE MORE MODERN SHOWS!! I TURLY LOVE IT. ALL THE GUYS ARE SO FREKIN HOT!!!
You guys are really going to cancel my show………..Nooooooooooo.. I have watched passions from the very first day, remember when Theressa accidently caused the bucket of paint to spill on ethan’s head, then it was the shake in the restaurant an even the fish at the cannery..It was the only show that brought something different from the rest of the shows. I use to rush home from school anxiously. I am not getting direct t.v so I’m a bid the show farewell from now. Don’t cancel the show please, I’ll have nothing to watch now. It was the only show that’s… Read more »
