Is Second Chance getting a second chance? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producers Howard Gordon and Rand Ravich discussed the status of their sci-fi cop drama.
The series premiered on January 13th.
Second Chance stars Rob Kazinsky as Jimmy Pritchard, an irritable sheriff who is killed at age 75. He gets another chance at life, however, when he’s resurrected as his younger self.
The series went through several changes before its current incarnation. Based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, it was previously titled The Frankenstein Code before being changed to Lookinglass before being changed to Second Chance. Then, in October, FOX cut the episode order from 13 to 11.
In the interview, both Gordon and Ravich addressed the episode cut, saying it has nothing to do with FOX canceling the series early:
First of all they’re spending money on reshoots, which is great. You don’t do that for [a show you don’t believe in], but it’s also put right after American Idol. We got the Empire slot. There is not a better slot on Fox, so if that’s not a show of faith. … It really is a scheduling issue. They offered us 13 [episodes]. They said, “Do 13, but we only have 11 continuously.” For storytelling purposes we said, “So, then let’s not do it.”
Ravich added that it was them who “begged” the network to reduced the episode order so they could better tell the story:
It was our choice to tell the story in the way it should be told and not have these two little episodes hanging out there that had no meaning.”
The premiere of Second Chance did okay in the ratings, receiving about 4.7 million viewers.
What do you think? Did you watch the premiere of Second Chance? Would you continue watching the series?
Please keep second chance and sleepy hollow. I always look forward to these shows every week and want to see them stay. Find them better than wayward pines and Gotham.. Don’t cancel!!!
We weren’t sure during the first episode if we were going to like it or not. But by the end of the episode WE LIKED IT! And we would keep watching it. We really hope they haven’t cancelled it.
Don’t understand Fox. Good series, good character development. Should have given it a real shot. They are making a mistake.
Absolute stupidity on FOX’s part if they cancel this series. Give it a “Second Chance”!, No pun intended. I’m sick and tired of getting hooked on great shows, only to see it non-renewed.
Every time there is a great show it seems to get canceled. Please give Second Chance a second and third chance. Remember there are a lot of us baby boomers not just the 18 to 35 market however our kids and their spouses do enjoy this show also.
Please do not cancel this show, it is one of my favorites.
Good show. Sorry about otto. Bet he cloned himself and show will do well with a Second Chance!
I love second chance please don’t take it away
SO aggravating to trust a network, get into a story and have it pulled. That our art and storytellers are dependent on commercial returns in a couple month turn around doesn’t bode well for storytelling and just no wonder people are leaving network programming. You can’t be trusted.
My Wife and I love this series. So of course you will cancel it. Every Series I like gets cancelled and another stupid reality show pops up.
Thank you!!! I hate them reality shows!!
Please keep second chance. My wife and I love it
My wife and I love this show. Please have a second season. My wife is so into it that she actually hates Otto and all the bad guys and loves Jimmy and his family.
I think it’s a good clean show. I haven’t missed an episode and would like it renewed, my wife also feels the same…..
Please don’t cancel my show please ,you say your audience is between 18-49 but me and my husband are in our 50s where’s our vote I know we aren’t the only older people in the world ,who do you think watches TV? You took off Forever which we never missed and we never miss this one now you are taking it too and probably for some reality bull crap let us older people have one show please .
