When Stargate SG-1 ended its run in March 2007, fans of the franchise could take solace that they’d still have weekly Stargate adventures courtesy of spin-off Stargate Atlantis. Now, Atlantis is being cancelled as well.
Stargate Atlantis debuted on July 16, 2004 on Sci Fi. The series follows the adventures of a human expedition to the lost city of Atlantis in the Pegasus Galaxy. While Atlantis generally hasn’t been as popular as the SG-1 series, it still has a lot of fans. After five seasons on the air, Sci Fi Channel has announced that the series is ending.
The cancellation didn’t come as a complete surprise to the producers. On his blog, showrunner Joseph Mallozzi cites rising production costs and the decline of the US dollar as contributors. He and showrunner Paul Mullie broke the news to the cast and crew themselves. Thankfully it seems like the adventure isn’t over quite yet.
The second half of season five will air as expected on Sci Fi beginning in January. The 100th episode, titled “Enemy At the Gate,” will be the show’s last. The Atlantis story will then continue in a two-hour movie. The as-yet-untitled movie will run on Sci Fi and soonafter be released on DVD.
Mallozzi and Mullie will write the movie script. It’s not yet known who will direct the project. Mallozzi writes, “Obviously, I can’t say much about it at this point but suffice it to say that it should include the entire cast in addition to a certain gaunt and pallid flowing-locked guest star.” A release date should be forthcoming soon.
Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, the SG-1 and Atlantis co-creators, are upbeat about the news. In a statement, they said, “We’re excited to tell Atlantis stories on a bigger canvas. The successes of the two original Stargate DTV movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both SG-1 and Atlantis to remain vital as we expand the franchise.”

“We share in the producers’ enthusiasm to move forward in this direction and we look forward to a strong and continued relationship on Stargate Atlantis in this new format,” said Thomas Vitale, Sci Fi’s Senior Vice President of Programming & Original Movies.
The network has indicated that “the show will live on as a network franchise.” What the statement actually means is unclear. Sci Fi may be planning additional Atlantis movies, or it could be a general indication that the Stargate franchise will continue, likely as a third series.
In late 2007, Cooper and Wright pitched Stargate Universe to the channel. Earlier this year, Wright told Gateworld, “The idea of Stargate Universe is that it is set on a ship that was part of an Ancient experiment that was set in motion probably millions of years ago — one that they never saw to fruition, but that we can.” He went on to say that the ship’s mission would be to help seed the galaxies with Stargates. Universe hasn’t been given a greenlight yet but, now that Atlantis has been cancelled, Sci Fi may have the funds to do it.
Though the Atlantis cancellation is surely a disappointment to fans, Mallozzi is confident the story isn’t over. He writes, “And, if [the Atlantis movie] proves anywhere as successful as the first two SG-1 direct-to-video features, you can be assured that this will be the first in a long, long line of Stargate Atlantis movies.” Stay tuned!

You have got to be kidding me! I love SGA. I love it and I’m not even a sci fi fan. Really the only good shows Sci Fi has is SGA and Eureka. This is a sham. I just got hooked on this a few months ago too! SCI FI you suck.
im 20 yrs old and have been watching sg-1and sga sice the begining thats a long time. realty show are fine but not for sci-fi. there are ver few shows like this left on tv and what were left with the crumbs of canceled shows what gives. sg-1 and sga have i all humor, acton, love what more can you ask of a show we’ve delved in to deep to these peoples lives and they feel like family you cant just take them away when there is so much left unsaid. i understand sg-1 leavng it was on for ten… Read more »
Hi, dont worry ppl. the new Stargate show is on his way. Stargate Universe.
Come on! Atlantis is a great show. I enjoyed 4400 and SG1 and both of those shows were canceled. I can’t stand the reality TV shows currently on and Ghost Hunters is ridiclous. Give us something decent to watch. Don’t cancel Atlantis.
I feel so sorry for those of us who really love the action and drama of really well written and preformed shows. I love SG-1, Atlantis, Slider, Serinity, Farscape, and all those really cool adventure shows that took us from a plain exsistance to thinking in a whole new way. Star Trek was another well written show. The one with Scott Bakula was great. My 30 year old son thought it was so different and then it was canceled. I’m sick to death of reality t.v. If I really want that, I will tune into the news for all the… Read more »
The shockwaves have even reached us down under in Australia. I can’t believe you are cancelling this show. I still haven’t gotten over losing Stargate SG-1, and now Atlantis will be going after only 5 seasons. The twice-a-year movies don’t even start to fill the gap. Come on guys! Escalating production costs and the dollar downward spiral are pretty piss poor excuses. Sorry, but if you’ve got the money for a new series, you’ve got the money to continue Atlantis. SciFi – you’ve lost credibility with an enormous fan base.
Im so tired of SciFi closing down series, arnt there any other channels that can take over, scifi clearly has become nuts!!!
This is typical… push the reality junk and get rid of the really good SciFi shows. IMHO the SciFi channel should change their name to the Reality channel… oh wait… there’s already one of those! This is extremely dissapointing and frustrating news! The only new show that’s been any good is Sanctuary… all of the other new shows on SciFi, like CHA$E, are stupid… I’m a major Science Fiction fan and have absolutly no desire to watch reality shows! SciFi… you’re driving away your main customer base… pretty soon you’ll just be another worthless cable network that’s struggling to find… Read more »
The Dresden Files, SG1 and now SGA come on Sci-Fi WTF !!!!

I too am shocked! I have never missed an episode! I am tired of having the sci-fi shows I loved cancelled! 4400, Farscape, Sliders. I also love Eureka. Whoever is in charge needs to get a clue. I also tuned in to Sanctuary, it doesn’t even compare to Stargate Atlantis.
AGAIN??? Are you kidding me?? First they take my Trek, then Angel gets canned when it had gotten to its best ever season, without even finishing properly, then The 4400 meets the same fate (anyone have any idea which network fat-cat swine hit the cancel button on that?), and now Atlantis after only 5 seasons?? Jesus, who makes these decisions? At least SG1 got a proper run, and the two movies have been great. It’s nice to hear the SG franchise is not dead completely and there are more stories in the making, but where is the logic in continually… Read more »
SGA is a top show, they keep talking about expanding the franchise. How can this be done when they are hacking down the very back bone of the franchise. SGA should not be cancelled their is so much more it can give please don’t cancel this amazing show.
Wow. To think that Skiffy’s habit of canceling popular scifi shows at the height of their popularity began with Farscape. Those were the days! Good to know they haven’t lost that ability. RIP SG Atlantis.
Now you Stargate fans know how we Scapers feel, eh?
its crap man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the show was good. and here i was thinking they would be around for about 3 more years!!!!!!!!!!!! and the point about sanctuary not being as good is correct. the stargate characters are much more interesting.
anyway, cancel ghoast hunters or somthing else to get the money for production.
whats next sci fi………….eureka. cause thats all you have left. ( got me hooked on awhole day marathon).
Dont cancel STARGATE ATLANTIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
