Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Boycot CMT!!!!!
I may not watch Nashville now that they have taken Sun Records off.
Disappointed, I’m from Memphis and was liking it despite some of the obvious fictitious elements. Drake Milligan did a great job as Elvis too with his accent, looks and demeanor. There are plenty of worthless shows on TV so too bad this wasn’t given a better chance so people could learn a bit about some important history of music.
My husband and I are so disappointed to hear that Sun Records is cancelled. We loved the show and told all our friends to watch it. We are 73 years old and we lived during that time period and it was a way to feel young once again. There is so much crap on tv now a days and a good clean show just can’t make it. Very very disappointed. We never watch Nashville and it survives. Go figure.
You didn’t even give Sun Records a chance, this is why I dislike watching new series, this was a great show. Please renew it.
Well enjoyed the series, got a little tired of the Marion love Interest part. Marion discovered Elvis and deserves full credit. Showing her like a fluzzy made me quit mad. Wished we would have made it to the young singers and their first concerts and their reactions. It should have focus on them and less on the physiological idiot Sam Phillips was. Loved them showing Parker for what he was a con man crook. To bad
So disappointed that this is cancelled! I thoroughly enjoyed it and looked forward to watching each week. I even recommended it to friends and family to watch it.
Love the show…please bring it back
What a disappointment. We were looking so forward to Season 2. It was very entertaining and great music. You should advertise it more so people can enjoy it. Hopefully another network will pick it up.
We were looking forward to season 2. The Show was awesome and my daughter and I were able to relate because we saw the Cortet Show in Vegas which is what the Show was about! We are very saddened that the Show will not continue. I’m so glad I have the show pre-recorded.
I was hoping for season 2. this show was pretty good was behind on the season but caught up. Getting interesting they need to look at some of the other shows that have been around a while and take them give this show a chance
THEY SHOULD HAVE RENEWED.. IT WAS JUST GETTING TO THE GOOD PARTS.. THE “BIRTH OF ROCK-N-ROLL” I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEEN MORE ABOUT ALL FOUR OF THE ROADS TO MUSIC,
I am confused , was there only 5 episodes in season 1 ? and now its cancelled ?
It is so sad 🙁
I really hoped for season two
So much for cmt. I’ve not watched Nashville nor will I. Not interested in made up stories of Nashville. Memphis was where music happened.
Easily the best show on the air. I never missed it and really looked forward to seeing it every week. Please reconsider!!!
