Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Just reduced Verizon package down to custom w/o CMT (it was the only reason I held on to higher package), and Sun Records was the ONLY reason I watched CMT. Oh well – hopefully a better/smarter network grabs it! It had tons of potential.
If stupid cmt won’t continue this series they should offer it to HBO or showtime.
You know like Sun did Elvis don’t stay with this show get some quick money.
I’m very sad that there is not going to be a second season. It was a great show it was history… I don’t understand what people want these days from a TV show. It was a true story of how it all happened. Who wouldn’t want to watch something like that. Well I still have SiriusXM radio George Klein he knows it all from the beginning. I will miss Sun Records
Maybe Netflix or Amazon could take over the series ????
The best show of 2017 cancelled ????? What gives ??? Great Casting, Acting, Writing, and Production Values !! Big Mistake CMT…….
My wife and I LOVED Sun Records! It was the ONLY show we watched on CMT. The network gets another one wrong!!! Wow… BEYOND disappointed!
What a disappointment. Just when we were all getting into Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis’ storylines. The Killer certainly deserves better.
I haven’t watched CMT for years. But, I’ll tell you, after seeing an advertisement for Sun Records, I marked my calendar! I’m very disappointed in the decision CMT has made to cancel this show. I will probably not be watching CMT from now on.
*This is not a move to boycott! This is just an opinion based reaction.*
I feel the same way!!
This show was amazing!!! My husband and I could hardly wait for more episodes!! It was so well done!! PLEASE RECONSIDER!!!
LOVE, LOVE SUN RECORDS!!!
Yes, I liked it too.
While it started slowly it was building to the rising of the artists that recorded at Sun studios. As it got it the end of the season you could feel the excitement of what was to come. The artists portrayed in Sun Records are all almost gone. This was a great way to keep their legend alive and introduce it to a younger generation. CMT you are making a mistake. Keep the show going and further these legends legacy and allow this generation know where their music originated. Keep these legends alive.
Just visited Memphis for first time because of the series Sun Records. Visited Graceland, Sun Records and sights on the show. Sorry to see it go, definitely one of my favorites.
Too bad…the show was excellent and it has not been given a chance to evolve. There was no support of it and no one knew it was even on!!! Friggin’ suits! CMT should be on one hand congratulated for the attempt and shot for not supporting it.
I agree, how can you judge a show that quickly?
Sun records was a great show – can’t believe it won’t be back. My husband and I looked forward to watching the show every week – so disappointed it won’t be back to at least see the stories of the characters to the end. Bring it back as a special so we aren’t left hanging!
It was a great show looked forward to seeing it every week. Please bring season 2….loved Drake Milligan as Elvis and the other actors portraiting Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and all the others….very nice show
Cmon, CMT. Sun Records was the best show you had and the only reason to tune in. Nashville is just a cheap soap by comparison. Bring it back or sell it to someone who will!
I had high hopes for Nashville – it could have been fun like Sun Records – edgy and cool – great scenes – good music. Nashville is too juvenile.
