Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
I loved this show, it showed the history of the music and Nashville! Please bring it back!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BRING IT BACK! It was THE BEST…and one of only 3 shows I actually watch on tv and the only time I ever tune in to CMT…it was soooo good!
Show was terrible. I couldn’t make it through the first episode. Rockabilly twilight.
I am very disappointed to hear that their will be no second season of Sun Records. This show was absolutely amazing. Getting to see in a show how Elvis and Johnny Cash became who they are today was just awesome. Please please do more seasons!!!
Very disappointing. Was looking forward to a second season. Good music, acting and story line. We were learning about how it started and it was non- violent. CMT had worse on.
Really?? Was one of the best shows on! Bring it back
This is a good series for my grandchildren loved it. They said it was teaching them the tough way early music industry was. They were sad to hear it was cancelled. Me too just another loss in the arts today
Loved it! Was looking forward to a second season!
Renew it you screwed up! This was going to be huge you didn’t give it enough time!
Maybe you should’ve advertised it a little more. Loved that show! Acting and story line excellent. Take this to prime time and get rid of some of the stupid reality shows!
The only show that I ever watched on CMT. You Network Nitwits need to bring this show back. We can look up the history of the Characters portrayed in the show, but as a show you guys really left us hanging. SHAME ON YOU.
Cancelled too soon. I believe the 500K+ viewing audience would have significantly increased in the second season. I am sure many of my age group 55-75, like my friends, did not know of the show until late in the season and would have been dedicated watchers in season 2 while spreading the word.
I love love love this show what no more???????
Bring back sun records I loved watching it, please bring it back!
Loved the show wanted to see more!!
