CBS has become known as the network for procedural TV shows. There’s no shortage of cops, lawyers, detectives, government agents, and doctors on the schedule — and they typically attract an older audience. So, it turned a few heads when the network picked up a show about a young female superhero — Supergirl. How’s the show doing? Will it be cancelled or survive to see a second season?
Supergirl revolves around Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist). As a girl, she survived Krypton’s destruction by being sent to Earth where she was raised as a human. She kept her powers a secret and now, as an adult, works as an assistant at a big city media conglomerate. Kara’s existence becomes known to the world and she is enlisted by a super-secret agency to help protect the citizens from evil forces as Supergirl. The rest of the cast includes Calista Flockhart, Chyler Leigh, Mehcad Brooks, David Harewood, and Jeremy Jordan.
The series started out strong on October 26th and attracted a 3.15 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 12.96 million viewers. It no doubt benefitted greatly from having The Big Bang Theory as a lead-in.
The following week, Supergirl’s ratings dropped more than 30% — falling to a 2.19 in the demo with 8.87 million. In week three, the numbers fell again. Though the ratings have seen some minor bumps upward, they’ve been slipping lower overall. The eighth and final installment of 2015 hit a new series low with a 1.52 in the demo and 7.28 million.
While the recent ratings aren’t terrible, it’s very concerning that Supergirl’s numbers keep dropping. Will they fall low enough to see the series cancelled? That’s hard to tell right now but the current downward trend doesn’t bode well.
If the show does end up being cancelled by CBS, there’s a chance that Supergirl could move to The CW for season two. After all, the show is produced by Warner Bros. Television (Warner Bros. co-owns The CW) and the series’ creator is Greg Berlanti — the man who created three other DC Comics shows for The CW — Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
Some would say that Supergirl should have ended up on The CW from the start. Perhaps a second season on the smaller network has been a back-up plan from the very start. It’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out.
But, what do you think? Do you like the Supergirl series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Should it move to The CW? Would you watch it there?
The show as improved a lot since the first episodes. In fact, the last few episodes have been on par with some of the best episodes from The Flash or Arrow. They’re really building some interesting subplots and overall storyline. And yes, Melissa really does own this role. She’s fantastic.
Supergirl started out slow and I think the bombings and the episode rearrangement hurt it… The episode they filled in was a filler episode and it just felt like the shoe wasn’t growing… But it has!!! These last few episodes have made me a fan, hitting me in the feels, providing a human connection for viewers, and a unique optimistic take. KEEP IT!
To clarify, by bombings I mean the Paris incident and the bombongs episode being rearranged.
I think Super girl is a great show, when it first started it appeared a bit teen bopper. But it has had its moments of darkness and I think as long as it moves in this direction it will continue to be appealing.
I am 55 and my wife is 53. We watch the show and enjoy it very much. Good blend of action, drama & comedy. I am a fan of Melissa Benoist’s singing and have been very impressed with her acting here (what was Glee thinking…but that’s another story). The episodes keep getting better and I hope they can effectively manage all these story lines going forward. Keep it going!
Keep Supergirl. It’s one of the best new shows I’ve ever seen and I was amazed by the brilliant performance of Melissa Benoist.
Supergirl is a very nice comic book TV show. CBS did the right thing by creating a comic book show with a female superhero as the lead. There hasn’t been one since Wonder Woman nearly 50 years ago. However, they knew that this is a comic book TV show which they are not known for. CBS needs to be patient with the producers and the show and let it tell its story and build it’s audience. Thank goodness they did renew it for 20 episodes. It is a good show that is finally settling down in the ratings and the… Read more »
Their are three female lead superhero shows right now
No. Supergirl is the only one that is a traditional superhero. Agent Carter is not a superhero but a badass secret agent. Jessica Jones is a not really a hero but more of an antihero. And she is hardly as well known. The females on the Agents of Shield are part of an ensemble. Supergirl is the star of her own show Supergirl just like the Flash and Arrow helm their own shows. That is a BIG deal.
This show hit it’s stride from the pilot on. In the spirit of “Once Upon A Time”, it’s taking established characters and putting a new spin to them. The acting is great!! Keep this show, CBS!!!!!!!!
Supergirl is the reason I paid for CBS All-Access. They cancel it and there is an excellent chance I won’t keep their subscription. The only other show they have that really catches my interest is CSI:New Orleans, mostly because of Scott Bakula and it’s local flavor to me (I live in Louisiana). Supergirl is not as strong and experienced as her cousin and sometimes makes “super-errors” which are pretty funny. As long as nobody is killed, there is an element of humor to it. But there is also an air of humanity to her that Superman has never matched. She… Read more »
that’s go for me too
Not sure if I enjoy the show or if Melissa Benoist’s smile has hypnotized me… We need more positive shows like this. Calista Flockhart does a great job with her role and am growing to like Jeremy Jordan after he broke Anna Kendrick’s heart in “The Last Five Years”.
I think the show is getting better and better each week. They just opened up a lot of potentially very interesting plotlines by letting Cat in on the big secret. It would be a huge shame if it got cancelled so early.
We love watching Supergirl as a family! I would continue to watch it on either channel however I do believe it’s worth keeping! Great fresh show, different from the usual suspenseful shows on CBS.
Keep This fantastic superhero show. And now it even has Martian Manhunter as well what more could a comic book fan ask for
Exactly! The show’s in its infancy & is doing pretty well in my opinion, Give it a chance to find its footing before you pull the plug!
My husband and I haven’t missed an episode, and we’re not young folks: I’m 47 & he’s almost 53. We love the show! Definitely keep it!
Keep it! It’s a great show. I must agree the first 3 episodes of the show was a bit of a bore. But give it some time! The show gradually got more intriguing and I love it. Keep!
It’s a good show … KEEP IT !!!
