Today, ABC airs the final episode of their daytime series, The Chew. Last month, the network announced that the cooking-themed talk show had been cancelled after more than 1,400 episodes. Will you miss it? Was this the right decision?
Launching in September 2011, The Chew replaced the All My Children soap opera after its 41 years on the network. A talk show that incorporates cooking and lifestyle-related segments, the series was initially hosted by Mario Batali, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly, Daphne Oz, and Michael Symon. Oz departed the show after six seasons and Batali left following sexual misconduct allegations in December 2017.
ABC decided to cancel The Chew in order to expand their Good Morning America series to three hours. NBC’s Today show has had a third hour (with various titles) since October 2000. The current incarnation is Megyn Kelly Today.
While the third hour of Today typically followed the regular program’s two-hour broadcast, hour three of Good Morning America will air separately, in the afternoon. The new hour of GMA is expected to be taped and not presented live, as the regular program is. ABC is making this move as Today has been taking the lead in various demographics in the morning ratings race.
If ABC had wanted to expand GMA to three hours, couldn’t they have replaced either The View or Live with Kelley and Ryan? That was unlikely to happen since both perform better in the ratings than The Chew. In particular, The View has been growing its audience and has been seeing its best ratings since the 2014-15 season (a rarity in today’s landscape). Meanwhile, The Chew has been in last place, ranking 13th out of 13 daytime series.
While ABC may have high hopes for a third hour of GMA, they no doubt have an uphill battle ahead. Daytime audiences often don’t like change and some viewers still hold a grudge against The Chew for replacing All My Children. Time will tell if the new hour of GMA will fare any better than The Chew did.

I loved, loved, loved The Chew. Do not need more GMA. I like GMA. bit its long enough.

ABC made a huge mistake in cancelling the Chew! We don’t need another talk show (GMC)
There is no comparison to the Chew. You had a truly different and entertaining show. Not to be rude but the hosts on GMC cannot hold a candle to the hosts of the Chew! Please put them back on!
I and my friends loved “The Chew”. Even often watched the evening reruns. If it comes back, so will I. Until then, PBS it is. Strahan needs to go to sports. He’s terrible at regular TV.
I agree, in part. Though I was not a huge fan of “The Chew” Strahan drives me away from anything he is in. He IS TERRIBLE! and I have given it a chance since I am now home bound and watch TV all day. but at least Kelly was able to save the show they shared,so I’d stay watching, unfortunately Sarah is not as talented. We miss The Chew, we recorded and watched every day. Miss Michael, Clinton & Carla. Please bring THE CHEW back!!

I still can’t believe they’re gone. Another GMA seriously! I stopped watching the original when they moved everyone around to bring in Strahan. When is his contract up anyway? Why do you keep moving everything around to fit him in? I miss my lunch buddies! Really wish they would come back with another Daphne type healthy eating style. Really putting me off this network.
I woll Not be watching GM…it is pretty bad and anoth Kelly and Ryan show….I will watch cable….not a smart move.
I can’t believe The Chew was replaced with yet another talk show! The Chew was great and such a fun diversion from all the cookie cutter daytime formats. Yeah, pun intended.

Bring back the chew…too many talk shows. GMA day isn’t doing it.
The Chew has been my absolutely favorite show on tv. I will NOT watch another show on ABC even though I have loved the Good Doctor. Pfft. After ABC/Disney canceled Last Man Standing, the Chew was the reason I continued to watch that channel at all. Now I don’t care. I hope ABC loses viewers like crazy. Stupid decisions.
The Chew is an amazing show. It is funny, intelligent and informative. The Chew is like having friends visit your house daily. Please bring back The Chew.

How or why cancel the Chew, and leave a terrible show like the View on? I did what the View when i t was in its early stage, but now it’s trash.
