Jason Ritter, star of The Event, tweeted today that, “I finished my last day of shooting on The Event. These last four episodes have been amazing! Catch up on old ones so you’re ready Monday!”
Talking about the show’s future, Ritter also wrote, “I would say if the ratings keep doing what they did on Monday, Season 2 is very likely! But we need all of your help to spread the word!!”
While we don’t know exactly what NBC has in mind for their 2011-12 schedule, it seems that Ritter is being overly optimistic about The Event’s chances for a second season. The show started off with very healthy ratings back in September but they quickly declined to very unhealthy levels.
The Event premiered with a 3.6 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 10.88 million viewers, and then quickly slid downward. By November, the numbers fell to a 1.7 rating and 5.54 million viewers. They stayed at that level for the remainder of 2010 and then NBC put the series on hiatus, promising a relaunch in early 2011.
When The Event returned in early March, it seemed like a lot of people had lost interest and/or figured that the series had already been cancelled. Since the return, it’s been averaging a 1.2 demo rating and 4.39 million viewers. Those are horrible numbers, even by NBC’s present standards. Remember, the network cancelled Undercovers when it was averaging a 1.4 rating and 5.97 million viewers.
This week’s episode of The Event was up by 18% in the demo. That’s very encouraging until you realize that the percentage increase is based on the numbers from a week earlier, a 1.1 rating and under four million. Those are CW-size ratings and it’s not hard to improve on those.
If fans of The Event can rally and the numbers keep increasing for the last four episodes of the season, NBC could very well consider renewing it. That’s going to be tough at this point.
If that doesn’t happen, let’s just hope that the writers wrap up the season in a fulfilling way for the fans who have stuck with it. The finale airs May 23rd.
What do you think? Does The Event still have a chance for season two? Will you watch the final episodes of the season? Do you think they’ll give enough closure in case it’s cancelled?

Also, least we forgot to mention that my wife and I will re-watch episodes on our mobile devices and phones while out and about…. I’m certain that NBC doesn’t consider this in their ratings.
My wife and I love the show. I agree that the ratings are not telling the whole story. We watch the show via the Web at Hulu or at the NBC website. Given the networks ‘behind the eight ball’ approach to the Internet over the past several years, they likely don’t understand the true number of viewers of the show. Perhaps they should consider offering the show via Zune or iTunes for .99 an episode or sell it to Netflix rather than canceling such a great show. We’ve purchased great content like this show in the past and would certainly… Read more »
Hi all, the event is an incredible and fantastic show, it certainly keeps me on the edge of my chair with all it’s twist and turns. Please, please, please produce a second season.
LOL from Penny.
I miss Heros!! This has gotten better with time; I simply do not know where we go in season 2. I say end with dignity on May 23rd and thatnk you for the great effort.
I agree the first few episodes were confusing but now it is really getting good. I hope they keep on the air!
My wife and I have been watching The Event from the beginning. I must admit that it was very confusing in the beginning episodes. But i must admit that it was fun trying to figure out who were the bad guys and who were the good guys. Demsey was a tough one to figure out. Now that all the pieces have been put together, I enjoy the show a lot more. I hope NBC will do another season. I’ve watched every episode since the start and would love to watch more in the Fall.
I can’t believe the low ratings. This show is one of the best I have ever seen. Go season 2!
The best show ever , Beter than LOST that last 6 season , this show need to be next LOST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE EVENT IS THE BEST SHOW ON TELEVISION!!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE MAKE SEASON 2
This is an excellent show! Please do not take the show off of the air. I enjoy this show way too much!
This is a great show! It reminds me of 24. The whole entire cast is superb and the story lines of deceit and chaos are magnificent. It is roller coaster ride from beginning to end. Last night episode was so intense. I think if more people were aware of this show the ratings would be out the roof. Please don’t cancel, instead advertise more. COME ON PEOPLE WATCH THE SHOW, YOU WILL BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!
I love this show! If anything can save this show its NBC, i cant understand why its getting low ratings, i look so forward to this show every week. When the show ends everyweek i want more. I think the producers picked a very good cast and alot of these young actors and actresses have very promising futures. I think Jason Ritter is incredible , i loved his dad and looks like the acorn dont fall far from the tree. Taylor Cole is absolutly beautiful, i mean where did she come from?! Move over Megan Fox!! I cant wait for… Read more »
I think that there isn’t or wasn’t enough advertisement for the second season of THE EVENT. My wife and I have been watching since the beginning and love it! after season 1 I stayed on the net trying to get some info on season 2 and finally I found what I wanted to see. I think if more people knew about it they would check it out, other than that maybe its to DEEP and viewers are starting to figure it out. I really hope an another network picks it up such as SCY FY channel and then maybe THE… Read more »
Ratings have always proven to be a flawed system. Look what the suits did to Star Trek way back when. How many of you out there have been asked to be part of the ratings system? How many of you out there even know anyone who participates in the ratings? No one has ever asked me for my opinion. If they did I would tell them that The Event is a thrilling nail biter that my wife and I look forward to every Monday night and it is the only reason we watch NBC at all. It has what 24… Read more »
