Jason Ritter, star of The Event, tweeted today that, “I finished my last day of shooting on The Event. These last four episodes have been amazing! Catch up on old ones so you’re ready Monday!”
Talking about the show’s future, Ritter also wrote, “I would say if the ratings keep doing what they did on Monday, Season 2 is very likely! But we need all of your help to spread the word!!”
While we don’t know exactly what NBC has in mind for their 2011-12 schedule, it seems that Ritter is being overly optimistic about The Event’s chances for a second season. The show started off with very healthy ratings back in September but they quickly declined to very unhealthy levels.
The Event premiered with a 3.6 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 10.88 million viewers, and then quickly slid downward. By November, the numbers fell to a 1.7 rating and 5.54 million viewers. They stayed at that level for the remainder of 2010 and then NBC put the series on hiatus, promising a relaunch in early 2011.
When The Event returned in early March, it seemed like a lot of people had lost interest and/or figured that the series had already been cancelled. Since the return, it’s been averaging a 1.2 demo rating and 4.39 million viewers. Those are horrible numbers, even by NBC’s present standards. Remember, the network cancelled Undercovers when it was averaging a 1.4 rating and 5.97 million viewers.
This week’s episode of The Event was up by 18% in the demo. That’s very encouraging until you realize that the percentage increase is based on the numbers from a week earlier, a 1.1 rating and under four million. Those are CW-size ratings and it’s not hard to improve on those.
If fans of The Event can rally and the numbers keep increasing for the last four episodes of the season, NBC could very well consider renewing it. That’s going to be tough at this point.
If that doesn’t happen, let’s just hope that the writers wrap up the season in a fulfilling way for the fans who have stuck with it. The finale airs May 23rd.
What do you think? Does The Event still have a chance for season two? Will you watch the final episodes of the season? Do you think they’ll give enough closure in case it’s cancelled?

I am not a big TV fan but I really love the event. It is actually the only show I watch. It is different from the other dancing, singing and crime solving BS that’s flooding the channels today. Great show, IT IS WORTH CONTINUING!
Isn’t it always the way: networks (especially NBC) are loathe to keep a low-rated show around long enough to gather a viewership — without hiatuses — and then it cancels it before that has happened. The Event is a really good show and deserves more time (and a decent time slot) to rise in the ratings. So much of television seems ruled by ratings that may or may NOT be indicative of who is watching (DVRs anyone?). It’s just sad that good shows often do NOT have time enough to grow their audiences, what with so much competition from cable… Read more »
THIS SHOW IS GREAT.WE NEED SEASON TWO
Please continue with S2. Sweden loves it!!
This day and age alot of people don’t have the time to watch a show like this cause its one of those shows where if you miss an EP your lost. I fricken love this show so much that I don’t want to think about it stopping. Does NBC use the sites that allow you to watch Ep online for their ratings on the show. I hope they have a season 2 but they need to show it on NBC differently. Having a break in the show like they did is crappy. The season has to flow for the fans… Read more »
The network execs of NBC should be cancelled! They’ve been making some pretty bad decisions the past couple years. The Event is one of the best shows on TV and should be renewed.
even the danish people love this serie
i really hope this show gets picked up for another season. It’s a really great show!!
This is the best show on tv right now. NBC will make a big mistake if it is cancelled, but NBC makes stupid decisions all the time, so I would not be surpirsed if the show doesn’t come back.
I also love the event and can’t wait for it to come on on monday nights. I is well written and I would hate to think it would go off the air. Everytime something good comes on tv they want to take it off.
I know these numbers are wrong. I recently caught up online and now can’t wait for Monday to come around. This show can’t be cancelled, it’s a great show. NBC will lose out if they get rid of this one
I love this show. NBC you are losing a great drama.
I hope it gets renewed! I love the show
It’s gotta stay on for the sake of us all that do watch it. There’s no way the numbers are completely accurate with DVR and online episodes.
Thing is many many people like myself watch the show on Hulu which doesn’t get included into the ratings. Many people, because of the economy for one major factor, are getting rtid of cable and satellite. The Networks get revenue from Hulu, so the networks when looking at show’s ratings, really need to start factoring in Hulu ratings as well.
i completely agree with this!
