When The Event was being promoted last summer, the producers made a point of saying that the series would be different from ABC’s failed FlashForward series. It turns out there were more unintentional similarities than they would have liked. Like FlashForward, NBC’s The Event has been cancelled after one season on the air.
The Event follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) who’s investigating the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend. He slowly begins to uncover a huge cover-up that’s beyond belief. Others in the cast include Sarah Roemer, Laura Innes, Ian Anthony Dale, Scott Patterson, Clifton Collins Jr., Taylor Cole, Lisa Vidal, Bill Smitrovich, Zeljko Ivanek, and Blair Underwood.
The serial drama started out with healthy numbers on September 20th, registering a 3.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.88 million viewers. Unfortunately those digits started to fall immediately. The series lost 19% of its demo viewers in week two and another 17% in week three. From there, things basically just got worse and worse.

NBC announced that they were putting the TV series on hiatus over the holidays and indicated they would give it a relaunch in early 2011. That’s never a good sign and it certainly didn’t help the ratings. The Event lost more than 26% in the demo between its last episode in November 2010 and its first in March 2011. The ratings stabilized but not at an acceptable level.
The Event currently averages a 1.8 in the 18-49 demographic and 5.72 million viewers. As poor as that is, the average is only that high because of the early season numbers.
It’s no surprise that NBC has decided to pull the plug. There are two episodes remaining in the series and thankfully they’ll provide some sense of closure for the devoted fans that hung in there.
What do you think? Why didn’t The Event survive? Why did so many people bail on the series, even before the long hiatus?

Unbelievable! I couldn’t wait until season 2 & then I find out the show was cancelled. I loved “The Event”. An original story line, great acting and suspenseful. This show perhaps should have been on the SyFy channel where a lot of other great shows are on. I love cerebral sci-fi shows & movies. Maybe there were too many idots at that time slot or channel. Look how many non-intellects are watching crap like Jersey Shore. Your IQ drops 30 points when keep watching those types of shows. I just don’t get it. Cancelled other great shows as well like:… Read more »
My husband and I were hooked on this show,The Event. Jason Ritter I love him,A legacy of his father.
You have so much crap on the airwaves,Like two in a half men. Hate it! Housewives,The real ones,Jersey shore just to name a few. Hate them.
Can’t we have something that has a story line and something to get excited about?
Hey NBC, you own the SyFy channel. Instead of killing off The Event just switch it from NBC to SyFy and use the funds there to continue the story with the actors you used on NBC. You will have the demographics needed to make your money from advertisers on SyFy, especially if you use one of the shows on Monday as a lead in.
Hi there! Im from the Netherlands and the last episode of the Event was on tv tonight. I really love this show! Cant believe there isnt going to be a season 2… But I have to say I can understand the bad views in the USA. You really have to watch it from the beginning, from episode 1.. if you try to watch it somewhere in the middle you will not get it. You missed too much. Thats why ratings didnt go up in the end I think.. Really sucks though! This was one of the best shows Ive seen… Read more »
Aaargh! That serie was sooo good! There are just too much series running at the same time! Instead of starting a dozen series and ending it after 1 season, just have a few series and stick with it!
It’s really crap to absorb people in the story after a year quit the show and leave the viewers in the cold!
You guys are freaking nuts…i’m so pissed. Now that it was getting juicy, you guys decided to cancel? what kind of ratings you are lookng for, the whole continent to watch it? Come on…
¿Cómo podéis cancelar esta serie?
Es de lo mejor que he visto este año….

I really like The Event. it boost up your critical and analytical thinking. Hope there’ll be a season 2. But if the ratings is really bad, maybe you can open or create a website for those tv show doesn’t have a well credits when air on TV like the Cape too. Online networks really have a spot in this generations. We’ll love to watch it online. then just make an teaser or advertisement on the TV. or definitely change the time slot and the season of the year it should be air. Like don’t air it when NCIS, Hawaii Five-O,… Read more »

I really enjoyed the show. Why didn’t you try another time slot? Why didn’t you show re-runs to pick up more viewers? It had so many possibilities, story lines and could have gone far. I was so disappointed when you cancelled it. It was great.
THE EVENT WAS ONE OF THE MOST WELL WRITTEN TV SHOWS I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. THIS IS A BIG MISTAKE CANCELLING IT. NBC MAY WANT TO RETHINK THIS ONE. THE WRITERS WERE EXCELLENT. I HOPE WHEREVER THEY LAND THEY ARE WELL PAID.
Networks have a way with canceling shows that have a fanbase, have different and often apocalyptic plots, and character development. Sometimes the fans win. In 2007 – 2008 CBS had a show Jericho (I won’t detail the plot–you can find it on the internet). In any case it was cancelled without a satisfactory conclusion. In the last episode, one of the characters in an embattled situation responded to a surrender demand with the remark “Nuts”. That was reminiscent of a general’s response to the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge (I think). In any case, the fans flooded the… Read more »
