It turns out that The First won’t have a second season on Hulu. The TV show has been cancelled after one year of eight episodes. Deadline confirmed the cancellation.
A British-American Hulu drama, The First stars Sean Penn, Natascha McElhone, LisaGay Hamilton, Hannah Ware, Keiko Agena, Rey Lucas, James Ransone, Anna Jacoby-Heron, Melissa George, Brian Lee Franklin, and Oded Fehr. The story centers on an astronaut crew attempting to be the first humans on Mars, as well as the families they’ll leave behind.
Written by Beau Willimon and executive produced by Willimon and his producing partner Jordan Tappis, the show is owned and produced by Westward Productions (founded by Willimon and Tappis) and co-financed by Hulu, Channel 4, and IMG.
The First was given a direct-to-series order in May 2017 and the only season of eight episodes was released last September.

I’m in disbelief that The First was cancelled. Quality acting , script and directing. Showed so much promise for future seasons. With an abundance of brain numbing shows on TV or streaming it was great to have something that actually challenged and intrigued. Shame on you Hulu.
Can’t believe they canceled! I mean it was, in my opinion, one of the best shows in Hulu. Guess I’m sticking with Prime to watch “The Expanse”. Hopefully Prime or Netflix pick up The First.
The performances were good but the pacing of it was so sloooow. So much so that there were a few times when I nodded off. It really is glacial type pacing.
Would definitely have tuned in for a second season. Penn is excellent in the role and other cast members worked well with his dynamic. Disappointed.

I want more of The First! Awesome story. Why would it get cancelled?? I love space travel and seeing the mission from all viewpoints, including families left on the ground.
I thought the first was a very interesting TV show.
Though Sean Penn does well in the lead, the show might have done better without him. He is an expensive asset, and a political liability, esp in the UK after his ridiculous commentary on the Falklands. Hard to view him in character as a hard-assed military type when you know his pink-panty politics.
Cancelled? What are you people thinking? Was it too deep for the millennials to grasp? This was one of the best intellectual drama I have seen in years and now some pencil pusher has cancelled it. MYbe someone with a brain will pick it up.
Well that sucks! Every time an intelligent show comes along they have to cancel it. The planet needs smarter people, not dumbed down shows. I hope it gets picked up by Netflix or Prime.
Can not believe the show’s been cancelled. One of the best TV dramas I’ve seen in years. Fantastic acting, script, story line with potential to be a classic TV series. So short sited of the TV networks and financiers. Guess the money will now be spent on another historically innacurate period drama, teenage super hero nonsense, Fantasy Dungeons & Dragons Dross or mind numbingly thrilling spy drama. Very disappointed. The first season’s story was long and slow (yet enjoyable), and after a couple of episodes, I guessed what the writers were going to do with the season. However, watching was justified with the promise of what was to come in season 2, and what all the intense back stories would mean when they got to Mars (were we in for a Tarkovsky’s “Solaris” sort of experience?). I loved The First and will miss the superb acting and script! Sean Penn has been one of my favorite actors for years. I was looking forward to seeing their time on Mars and where the show would have taking us in season 2. Such disappointing news!
So disappointed The First has been cancelled. I was really enjoying it. Very well acted and compelling viewing. I understand there was perhaps too much family drama for some, but it was done so well, I really bought into it. I hope another network picks it up; though doubtful after only one short season.
