Though ABC didn’t have much luck with their Eastwick drama, the network is trying another kind of supernatural series, The Gates, for the summer months. Will this one make it to season two?
The Gates revolves around a big city cop who moves his family to a quiet gated community where many of the residents aren’t exactly what they appear to be. The ensemble cast includes Rhona Mitra, Colton Haynes, Frank Grillo, Janina Gavankar, Chandra West, Luke Mably, James Preston, Marisol Nichols, Skyler Samuels, Travis Caldwell, Victoria Platt, and Justin Miles.
The series debuted on Sunday, June 20th, to an unimpressive 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.78 million viewers. Considering all of the network’s promotion, this was a disappointing start. The premiere ranked first in the demo and second in total viewers for the timeslot.

In week two, viewership for The Gates dropped by about 30%. The demo fell to a 1.1 rating and total viewership came down to only 3.24 million. That put the show in second place in the demo and in third place for viewers.
Though ABC has lower expectations for this summer show, the ratings do not bode well for the show’s future on the network. Unless more people start watching, it’s hard to imagine that we’ll be seeing season two.
For now, let’s hope they show all 13 episodes of season one. The Gates is expected to run until September 19th but, with ratings like these, it’s not hard to imagine the network replacing them with something else.
What do you think? Is The Gates worth watching or would you just cancel it already? (Want to know how Scoundrels is doing? Go here.)

I think “The Gates” is suffering because of the poor lead-in show “Scoundrels.” It should be on a different night in an earlier time slot. Don’t write it off because of low ratings. Many shows which turned out to be hits started that way – “The X-Files” and the original “Star Trek” come to mind. The writing is excellent and each week there is a different, interesting twist to the plot. There’s nothing else like it on TV, despite the endless comparisons to “True Blood” and the “Vampire Diaries.” ABC should keep that in mind and continue to promote it.
I have really tired to like The Gates. I have watched it every week, but (to be honest) only because there was nothing else on after True Blood goes off after 10pm.
Keep The Gates! Great show!
let’s start a “Don’t close The Gates” campaign right now before they even have a chance to think about cancelling it to show support. Most times by the time we get around to trying to save a show, it is alreay too late and the cast has moved on…
I say keep it but change some of the cast. The blond is pretty pointless and Rhona Mitra is too quivery. Love Nick’s wife and Nick is growing on me too. Love Dylan – he’s really come in to his own and love the teens too. And Teresa was great – she was killed off too soon! And why does Christian have a terrible fake american accent when he too is English?
i wonder if some viewers are like me? i hate to invest myself into a show that may be cancelled by the network. i know this is what is called the “firefly” effect but how true it is. moonlight is a good example, this is a series that i watched to the end only to find out it ,was cancelled before it almost began. i think this is one of the biggest reason these shows may lack in ratings or they need to get a different rating system. i hope they keep this series but if it is cancelled the… Read more »
The Gates is awesome. People need to give it more of a chance. It’s just going to get even better from now on. KEEP it.
I love The Gates! Definitely KEEP it!
They need to change the day it’s on. It’s a good show that no one knows about.
I would watch it even if only to see what the world’s most lazy teacher does each week !
That school teacher has become a cult phenom and I suspect they are cleverly working him in and saving him for something BIG!
I’m already hooked on this show, I don’t know what I will do with my life if it gets cancelled… Haha, sounded more emo than I intended too :p But I really do love it, too bad that I live in Norway, so I have to watch it online..
If you look at TV these days its all the same NCIS in every major city, Greys Anatomy, Bones, Then a show like this comes along and no one wants to give it a chance. I say vote for a show that brings new elements to television. The Gates definately does this. I think you could have a huge following if you just let it soak in to the general public. Why is it everything I like gets canceled. Peanut Reeses for example or Lemon Aide Gatorade. Now the Gates. vote yes for The Gates and vote yes for me.
This is coming from a 18 year old girl, and I am speaking for all of my friends (and I really do mean all) when I say PLEASE KEEP THE GATES! It’s great, I’ve totally been enjoying the entire series, all 4 episodes that have aired. ABC never really gives anything a chance, and I really, really think that this show deserves it.
Its a hell of a lot better than the Vampire Diaries and Twilight… I’m not sure about True Blood because I’ve never really watched it but this show is fantastic so far!
Please keep The Gates on the air.
Has totally grabbed my attention, didn’t even know about it till I came across it by chance in iTunes, I hope they run with it cause it seems like it will be a good show with lots of good twists to it.
