Is there still a future for The Kids Are Alright? Recently, star Mary McCormack spoke with The Los Angeles Times about her efforts to save the cancelled ABC TV show.
Set in the 1970s, the sitcom centers on the Clearys, an Irish-Catholic family living on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The cast includes Michael Cudlitz, Mary McCormack, Sam Straley, Caleb Foote, Sawyer Barth, Christopher Paul Richards, Jack Gore, Andy Walken, and Santino Barnard.
In the interview, McCormack says she thinks ABC cancelled The Kids Are Alright before its time:
It feels too short. It’s hard to get something really funny and nuanced and moving, and I thought our show was all those things. There’s a lot of stuff I don’t understand about how shows find new homes, but you do hear about it. And I guess because you hear about it, your fans think there’s hope. There are just so many networks now — networks I’ve never heard of. So I’m still holding out a little hope that someone will look at us and see we’re like the already housebroken cute shelter pet that needs someone to adopt them.”

This was the best new sitcom in a long time. The writing was smart and funny and the cast executed it perfectly. Each actor in this large ensemble did a great job on their characters. I’m sooo disappointed that it hasn’t been renewed when other shows that were not so great were ( I’m looking at you, Bless This Mess!). I seriously hope that it gets a second chance either on ABC or another network.
I love this tv show and was very disappointed that ABC cancelled the show so quickly. ABC doesn’t give good shows a chance to get viewers.
I would have absolutely watched another season and another season and another season! This was one of the BEST shows ever written. The dialogue was so funny… LOL funny! No other sitcom on television does that for me and my family. The show was never given a chance… hardly anyone I know, even knew it existed… so something was wrong there! Bring it back!!!
I loved The Kids!! I told my family all about it and everyone started watching. I am so tired of the network’s canceling good shows and putting on garbage. Enough of reality type shows. With all of the different streaming services and networks out there I would think someone would pick up this fantastic very funny show. Why is it that the networks only pay attention to the 18 to 49 age group? I’m sorry but I don’t think I’m dead at the age of 55. I loved Mary and Michael as the parents. Their performances as Irish Catholic were spot on. Unfortunately, smart programming is not appropriated. I would watch a 2nd and 3rd season.
This show should be saved! Very clever writing and funny! ABC should have dumped Bless this Mess instead.

This was our favorite show!! Still watch reruns on our DVR almost every night as we go to sleep. So, so clever. And so accurate (I say that as a former child of a large Catholic family) PLEASE bring it back.
This is a fantastic show. I don’t understand why it was canceled. It was very entertaining, funny, and had great actors.
I LOVED ‘The Kids Are Alright!’ All the the characters were just coming into their own and it got canceled.
I looked forward to it all week. The kids and parents all had unique roles and all worked together as a complete unit.
It’s a shame it was canceled just as it was coming into its own.

I looked forward to Kids Are Alright every week. It was hilarious and brought back me of the 70’s which I remember. I can’t believe they canc it and yet kept the lake and similarly rated Single Parents. Or Bless this Mess which is just a less funny ripoff of Green Acres!
