Fans of The Magicians were surprised by the cancellation of this SyFy series recently. It was announced last week that the series will wrap on April 1 with the end of the current season, and those behind the series knew the end was near when the season began.
In an interview with TV Insider, Sera Gamble said the following about how she felt about the future of the season at the start of season five of the Syfy series:
“We had the sense going into this season that Syfy, in particular as our first platform, was kind of hitting the point of ‘The cup is full and there’s no more room.’”
Those involved did try to find a new network for the series, but that search failed. John McNamara spoke about that search:
“None of them seemed in the end like a perfect financial or creative fit. And so we reluctantly just decided, ‘Well at least we have this season finale that was crafted to also be a series finale.’ It was kind of always going to pull double duty.”
The cast has also spoken about the decision to end The Magicians. Sera Gamble revealed that the cast was emotional about the series coming to a close:
“Everyone is pretty savvy about how the business works. All the writers, the actors, our whole team. And so coming into this season, everyone was pretty level headed and aware that we had hit a certain point in the lifespan of this kind of show. And people were really emotional about it, but in many ways, that was because we’ve created a family over the last several years that really wanted to do right by the show. So aside from the musical that came out of John’s moment of denial, we tried not to indulge in any denial about it. We wanted to make sure it was a really satisfying conclusion. And so when Henry and I wrote the finale, there really wasn’t a difference in approach to writing it because I honestly never counted on there being another season.”
Several members of the cast went to social media to talk about the series ending. Check out their posts below.

So honored to have been part of this show. @serathegamble and @johnthemcnamara are brilliant creators and the cast is so wonderful. Can’t wait to see more of all their work in future projects <3 https://t.co/0dgpOxXT74

What do you think? Are you sad to see The Magicians end next month?
Well, for me they ruined it when the killed off the main character so… meh.
I think they should have probably wrapped it up and had a clear and concise ending in sight from the beginning. Not every show is going to run 15 seasons like supernatural, not every show is going to take off and spawn an entire genre like star trek or stargate. I think that the writers had such amazing potential with the show and at some point they lost their direction all at once. Joss whedon did worse when he murdered firefly in my opinion.
I loved the show. Syfy. You always do this to me. Warehouse 13 and now Magicians. ~sob~ cry~ now where am I to go to get my Elliot and Margo fix?
Let’s be honest. The show was over after last season. This season was a pale imitation of previous seasons. As to all shows that put gender politics before story telling and character development.
I agree 100 %
Wtf?! Seriously! You cancel a top show with a great following and a story that is just getting started because of financial reasons? How does that even make sense? What are yoy gonna replace it with? Some crap show no one will watch….just to save a couple bucks? That makes so much sense! Who cares about the bottom line! Bring our show back or we send in the hedges! Dont mess with our show!
Who do we have to call to get this decision reversed?
It figures. No surprise that a show that is worth keeping on the air won’t be.
Syfy does this with every show.
Yup. Killjoys, The Expanse, The Magicians… And then the Syfy exec’s wonder why their ratings are so low. Well, it’s because they keep cancelling all their best shows.
I hope there’s still a chance that another channel or network can pick up this incredible original show/cast/writer/producer/directors/crew!
Yes very sad to see the show end. I looked forward to watching the single most magical story line series on tv. Never knowing how the gifted cast was going to get out of this one or that one. To lose one’s self for the duration of the show, forget life’s problems, to sit back and chow down snacks was the highlight of my day. So to be sad is an understatement. My selfishness wants the show to never end. But with all great escapes, this to must stop and be reminded to be grateful for the writers and producers… Read more »
So sad, such an original and unique show you don’t find these days . I will miss you all !
I do feel this season is all a bit everywhere, I will still miss watching. Hale and Summer, I will miss you most! Long live The Magicians!
I’m really surprised they’re not saying what is probably true: Quentin was the centerpiece of the show. Ending with S4 would have made far more sense.
If you read the books it says that the magician program lasted 5 years so I’m not surprised.
Absolutely heartbroken that we’re losing The Magicians, I’ve been a fan since the 1st show 5 years ago, This is by far my favorite show that has ever been on television, Quintan cold water gave a voice To all of us that have Depression and anxiety and suicidal feelings that just hope for the best in the world. As I’m writing this I’m tearing up at his sacrifice all over again. No other show on TV has ever pulled out such raw emotions from me. I feel like I’m losing my best friend.
Nooooo….my favorite show. Please go to the CW…..
I’m just heartbroken, I absolutely love this show.
Me too!! I absolutely loved the hell out of this show!! It was one of my favorites for years!! I’m definitely buying the full series when it comes out on dvd!! I hope that it does anyway!!
