This week, ABC unveiled their new daytime makeover TV series, The Revolution. As soap fans know all too well, it replaced One Life to Live (OLTL), the venerable daytime drama that was cancelled in 2011 and went off the air last Friday.
Based on what we’ve seen, it looks like The Revolution is going to be a ratings disappointment right out of the gate. While it’s too late to save OLTL, this show’s failure may be enough to buy General Hospital some more time.
ABC has signed Katie Couric to host her own daytime syndicated talk series beginning in the fall of 2012. Since there are only so many hours of daytime, it’s been widely speculated that Couric’s new show will take over General Hospital’s slot, at least on ABC-owned stations.
If The Revolution and The Chew tank and end up being cancelled however, there will be enough space on the schedule for both General Hospital and Katie Couric. If fans follow the four OLTL characters to General Hospital, that soap’s viewership could increase enough to justify keeping it.
ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee recently said, “I am a fan of General Hospital, but we have not made a decision on its future and don’t really have a time frame for it either.”
The network execs probably haven’t made up their minds yet about the fate of any of the daytime shows. Those decisions will likely be made in the next several months and, as in any business, it’ll all come down to profits versus expenses.
What do you think? Realistically, do you think General Hospital will survive into the 2012-13 season? What about primetime? Do you think The Revolution or The Chew will see a second season?

Haven’t watched and won’t watch the revolt, only ever caught the last few minutes of the chew, what a silly show. Just turn on food network or TLC for more of the same if you like those. A cable network should pick up the soaps, since the networks are copying cable programming. Then ABC will see a revolt….of advertisers.
I refuse to watch the chew or the revolution and if ty take gh off and put katie couric on then im done with abc all together wont watch the channel at all. I agree they should move all the soaps to soapnet not take them off the air.
ABC Soap fans — some news that is a bit encouraging!
Revolution seems to be falling flat and Chew not all that fabulous! So, why does this mean it’s TOO LATE for OLTL? Is there no way it can be resurrected if these 2 shows flop? 2 shows that former ABC President Dennis Frons used to replace strong rated soap shows, OLTL (Jan 2012) and AMC (Sept 2011).
ABC-Disney is wrong about what daytime viewers want … and by now they’re probably realizing it. However, I don’t see them EVER admitting they made a mistake. So I’m betting if The Spew and Revultion fail … they’ll just bring on more drivel like it instead of keeping GH.
The suits at ABC and Disney are idiots who don’t care about what viewers want. They only care about lining their pockets. It just came out that Iger made over 13 mil in 2011. Doesn’t that just say it all?
I hope you will join this group if you have not yet done so if you are as angry about OLTL and AMC being cancelled. The group has over 8300 members. We are working very hard daily to help show demand. A few characters moving to Port Charles is not enough. We need all 3 shows on air. https://www.facebook.com/groups/200709853303867/
It s not to late to save OLTL . Its only been off the air for a week. I would think that they should save OLTL . The ratings were through the roof. Nows the time to save the show before all the actors get jobs.
I couldn’t care less about The Chew but I happen to really like The Revolution. I watched today and plan on watching every Friday from now on. The weight loss transformation aspect of the show is very groundbreaking for daytime TV and has the feel of a primetime show, surprisingly. It’s very similar to Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition (which shares the same producers, I believe) but with mildly overweight women getting a makeover instead of morbidly obese men and women. I hope the ratings improve and more people start watching The Revolution, at least on Fridays. It’s a genuinely… Read more »
I am sorry to say this, but GH needs to go off air. I used to be a faithful viewer of the show, but the storylines are just plain boring and a lot of fan favorite characters are no longer on the show and makes GH impossible to watch. With so many newbies, I do not care anymore for the show. With that said, daytime has been a dying format, and I do not see how many shows can last. Although I would love to see OLTL and AMC come back, they would not last long with declining daytime viewership.
I for one am glad to see “The Soap Opera’s ” GO ,GO,GO…… Life itself can be a soap opera, who needs it to be rubbed into our face when we turn TV on. To many people believe the soaps are real life; and don’t pay enough attention to their own reality. If the soaps come back , my TV will go off during the time frame..
Really??? People are entertained by soaps! Coming home from work or school and being entertained by people that trying to change lives or talk about the REAL works is not a very relaxing escape from the fact that we are all living in the REAL world everyday trying to make an appropriate life for our families! Who needs to be serious all the time? Besides its fun escaping the stressors of the REAL world once in awhile. Those that don’t come back down to earth need HELP, not the exclusion of soaps on TV.
I just find it odd that so many viewers are continuing to voice opinions on their favorite shows being cancelled and ABC is not listening. OLTL carried 2.4 Million viewers steady, The Revolution 1.9 Million, what a joke. Bring back Llanview! I wasn’t a fan of All My Children, so I tried to give The Chew a chance…it was so boring. I can’t watch it. I tried to just DVR shows that sounded fun…but the show is LAME! I won’t even DVR The Revolution because of it replacing OLTL. I know the new reality shows are cheaper than soaps, but… Read more »
We shouldn’t even be having this discussion. All My Children and One Life To Live should still be airing and General Hospital should not have to be walking on egg shells. Terrible terrible decision on the part of Disney/ABC. Their replacement shows are insulting to viewers and if GH is tossed for Katie Couric, ABC will become the lowest rated network for daytime television because soap fans are leaving in droves. These cheaper cookie cutter programs have got to end. Enough is enough!
“The chew” and “The Revolution ” are the worst shows ever! You couldn’t get me to watch either one if you put a gun to my head. Add Katie Kouric to the mix and I’ll put a gun to my own head.
SAVE GENERAL HOSPITAL!!!
im from canada save the soaps i do not watch the chew and revolution not good shows at all
Bring back the soaps!!!! The replacement shows are awful. They are just commercials. I want scripted tv. No ABC Disney anything in my house!!!
I will never watch The Chew or the Revolution. First of all, they don’t have any appeal if your IQ is over 60. Second of all, ABC made an attempt to force them upon viewers by dictating what they wanted us to want. They never really asked people. Brian Frons, should never work again. ABC and Disney execs should spend the rest of their lives in shame and ruin. The hosts of these so called talk shows should be fired and never work again. They took jobs that helped ABC kill the soaps. Don’t forget to boycott Macy’s. They are… Read more »
