Well, there’s one singing competition that won’t be back next season. The Sing-Off has been cancelled after three seasons on the NBC.
Hosted by Nick Lachey, this TV series seeks to find the most-talented a capella singing group in America. Judges have included Ben Folds, Shawn Stockman, Nicole Scherzinger, and Sara Bareilles. The judges decide who advances to the finale and the final winners are determined by viewer votes. The champs take home a Sony recording contract and $200,000.
The Sing-Off began in December 2009 as a short-run series with just four episodes. It did reasonably well — averaging a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.9 million viewers — so the peacock network brought it back for season two.
It returned in December 2010, expanded to five episodes, and the ratings rose 26% — to an average of a 2.9 in the demo with 8.6 million viewers.

NBC decided to take another chance and give The Sing-Off a two-hour timeslot on the fall schedule with 11 episodes. That gamble didn’t pay off and the ratings were much lower. By the end of the season, The Sing-Off averaged a 1.5 in the demo with 4.56 million.
On our NBC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of TV shows on the network, The Sing-Off has an “C-” grade. The network has now cancelled the show.
NBC could have brought it back for another limited run, perhaps over the summer or in December but were likely hesitant to flood their schedule with yet another singing/talent competition. America’s Got Talent has been very successful for them over the summer months and NBC plans to run two cycles of The Voice next season. There just wasn’t a place on the schedule for The Sing-Off any longer.
What do you think? Do you think NBC should have kept The Sing-Off, perhaps run it in December? Are you sorry to hear that it’s been cancelled and won’;t be back for a fourth season?
Bring it back…only show I truly love
I absolutely loved the sing off! Last years season was really great! It should be brought back for one more season. It was different than any other tv show and entertaining to watch. Why not bring it back???
Bring the sing off backkkkkk!!!
Bring it back. My friends from st louis and denver love the show. It is the best one!!
Throw us a bone NBC !!!! … The only show on television that was not all about the popularity of the judges but was all about the singing… and it’s gone? Come on NBC…. The Sing Off was in a class of its own. I agree with the comment that said it was appropriate for little ones and the whole family. Everyone in my home was looking foward to being able to sit down and here “Real” vocals. We are shattered about it being cut. We’ve been counting down for this show all year. We feel like a good thing… Read more »
So sorry to see this go while lesser quality shows remain. I really enjoyed it and started counting down to the next season as soon as the current one was done.
Bring the Sing-Off back! This show made my year. As an aspiring singer this is by far my favorite show! I get the pleasure off meeting Street Corner Symphony at Butler Jazz fesr, and would like to top my Senior year off with my favorite show, and so would my entire choir…
NBC blew this call!!! Their ratings over the year may not have been up to par but as season 3 progressed it hit it’s stride. The exec’s need to revisit this decision and listen to their public. The people recognize real talent and will stand up and cheer for a group like Pentatonix. I for one watched with my jaw on the floor when they hit the stage!! In a time when America is depressed about the state of the economy this show is just the vehicle to give us an escape and boost our hearts. Wake up NBC!!!
Thank you NBC for ruining my fall, I lived for this show!
I’m completely dissapointed in NBC’s decision….The singoff is the most exciting and is by far the best siging comp on television undoubtedly…I’m a 17 yr old acapella geek in Samoa…The singoff was shown early last year here in the islands, wajn the first season was a delight…It was hope for us here, to continually pursue our interest in the music industry…mahn…even better, our passion for music specifclly acapella…Committed, nota and pentatonix..huh…3 diffrnt champs, all unique…i dnt knw wat 2 say….The shows very ambitious and inspirational for me…ive downloaded all vids on youtube 4 gudness sake!!…Save the sing off…The real showcase… Read more »
This is a terrible decision. The sing-off is the ONLY singing competition that I actually looked forward to. It truly highlighted those with amazing singing talents. With all of the auto-tuning happening now, no one has to display real talent. A capella singers have that real talent. Along with the talent, it’s also one of the few and rare reality shows that a family can watch together. The outfits and song picks were always appropriate. This is a show that my family and I will miss.
OMG! I can’t believe it! The Sing-Off was the best vocal talent show on tv. Just goes to show you substance and talent don’t mean anything anymore. PLEASE NBC-bring it back!
Too bad. One of the best showcases of raw talent.
The sing off was a wonderful way for singers to show how powerful acapella music could be! SOOOO disappointed…so is my 10 year old daughter.
I loved the sing-off!!! Best talent/singing show of all time! It really shows what people can do with vocals…I’m very disappointed to see it go so soon..I thought it was awesome! They definitely should run again.
