Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.
How csn we vote to keep it on even if it’s with a different tv channel? I’d love for it to stay on its really stupid to shut this show down and for no reason what so ever! How about this let’s stop watching fox channel what’s so ever if they want to stop every good show! But please wil someone email me or something so we can sign a petition to keep it on!!!
I loved this show. When there is a new series I make myself watch at least 4 shows before I make a decision. With Wayward Pines it was the fourth show that made me a believer, after that I looked forward to Thursday night. I found the story line very creative and can find vast amount of different plots to write. People get to hung up in details. This show is for entertainment, sort along the lines like Grimm. You have to give a show a second season to get a following, besides one of the most stupid shows “Scorpion”… Read more »
I do agree with you I don’t understand why they would just shut it down like that one of the best shows I’ve ever seen!
I am so tired of shows that are really good and do well in ratings being dumped. This has been great sad they are killing it
Oh course FOX cancelled Wayward Pines because this is an intelligent, thinking person’s show and that can not be allowed to exist. The same thing happened to “Gracepoint” which was based on the British show “Broadchurch” and was one of the most beautifully filmed TV shows, I have ever viewed. The locales used in “Gracepoint” were just stunning. Wayward Pines is a show that has been the most fascinating thing on this Summer. I even purchased Crouch’s 3 books upon which WP is based. At least I can enjoy those, now that the show is no more.
What a disappointment! The ratings were decent, the writer was ready, and it’s had a loyal following (me, for instance!). When I see the junk that IS renewed, it’s discouraging.
Fox finically cancelled the right series..never has such a great group of talented actors been collectively in such trash.. This show was a big slap in the face. It never went anywhere and used ridiculous stolen concepts that the writers had no talent in executing . I was hoping that somewhere a reveal or surprise that took the story somewhere, that helped to explain the lunacy. But there wasn’t any explaination, just bad ideas that insulted those of us who wasted out time waiting for something to happen that told a story. And when they have story lines that include teachers pushing… Read more »
Love this show, I would definitely watch another season if they made one.
I agree. I love the show. The ratings were good. WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU FOX???? TAKE OFF MR ROBOT. AN IDIOT THAT TALKS TO HIMSELF AND THINKS ABOUT THINGS THAT ARE NOT IMPORTANT!! This story would go somewhere if given a chance. Did you all see next weeks coming attraction? FOX BRING IT BACK… BRING BACK WAYWARD PINES! DON’T LET ANOTHER GOOD SHOW GO OFF THE AIR!
Too bad FOX does know better when they have a great show on thier hands! They never disappoint to cancel them! THEY CANCEL EVERY GOOD SHOW. BACKSTROM and now WAYWARD PINES!! This series never failed to keep me on the edge of my seat!!! It should continue and get rid of all the reality crap on the air!
Love it and please don’t give up . Matt is a,very good actor.
It’s true that the series has a beginning and end so it really doesn’t need to go any further unless they can find some creative way to explore new territory but I really don’t see it. I truly love the show and I would love to see more but I just don’t know what direction they would go
A waste of acting talent. I gave up at the beginning with poor writing and concept. A key example of why US television fails. Thinking of additional seasons instead of concentrating on just one.
I couldn’t agree more. I keep waiting for a real story to emerge . But instead they focused on the contrived story of self imposed paranoia, completely unnecessary and lacking in the good sense a story like this needs.. Bringing people to thousands of years into the future and having only one real storyline,a massive failure to set up the whole of the experiment ,with this idiotic reason for doing it…they self destructed….people have an innate will to survive. The using that paranoia every week for a story that went nowhere. And the use of the children and that creepy teacher..skin… Read more »
great show, just like Fox to get rid of another great show, just like The Following
This show was great. It is the only show I have watched why I dvr’ed. Going to miss.
How does fox cancel a show like Wayward Pines? It seems like ANY INTELLIGENT show that makes you think arrives it gets cancelled in favor of these dumb “reality” crap or borderline “talent” shows! I’m disapointed that fox chose to pass on this one!
It’s a matter of $$$.
Sorry!but I didn’t find this one intelligent..the storyline was so poorly executed I thought…it felt like it was a mess…the use of a contrived paranoia at the expense of the real story? The meaningless loonies around town..the changes without any reason. In personalities of key members of the cast. They never explained how any of this happened.. It was all about this psychopath’s idea to save humanity from it own evolution. Even the main story which they never got to, made no sense. But that would have been ok,if,they had a reason not to go there?? And there was no… Read more »
The promo last night said “epic series finale”
I believe the show was meant to be a mini-series.
I like the show
