Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.

Fox cancels all its great shows bi matter how good the ratings are remember it canceled 24 multiple times and so many people complained they had to bring it back that’s why I never watch fox shows I gave them another chance with this and it was great but I’m done with all fox programming again
Fox really need to make a second season of wayward pines. Just do it already will ya.
Since i started watching this series I fell in love day 1. It has filled in a hole in the sci-fi series department which have been lacking since all the stargate series died of years ago these days they just don’t make sci-fi type stuff till recently with this and a couple others but then after just a single year they cancel it AND it’s their 2nd best series that was going so i don’t see how they can justify it when series with less then 1mil viewers have gone on for 2-3 seasons or even longer at times.
To everyone complaining about this, let’s look at this fairly and objectively:
The 10 episodes of Wayward Pines were adapted from a trilogy of novels. The entire plot of the trilogy has been covered by the 10-episode series. A second season was ALWAYS a longshot. Just be happy with an above-average summer miniseries that kept us all riveted for the last three months, yeah? It’s like complaining about there being no more Harry Potter movies.
Fox is NOT ******** us by “cancelling” Wayward Pines. There simply isn’t anything to cancel. This was a one-and-out from the beginning.
I thoroughly enjoyed this season of wayward pines an am in complete disbelief that there may not be a season 2. Why cancel great shows!. Common fox really..
I’ve been binge watching this show and I love it! Please, If fox doesn’t renew, someone pick it up!!!! Netflix????
Well, this was really a great series, well thought, well acted, it had all the ingredients of success… Why is it cancelled?! Because TV execs prefer getting audiences dumb and dumber by means of reality TV that is cheap on all levels. Well, I am really sorry for this show. It is a masterpiec, but unfortunatelly these days there is no consideration for real values.
WP is the cream of the crop of scripted programs this summer…..bring on a second season.
Wayward pines, the Sarah Connor chronicles, firefly. ..YOU SUCK FOX!!!
Feminist groups complained and got it cancelled. They wanted the female lead to blow herself up.
I hate that these channel bosses get us public into these programmes and cancel them due to ratings, what about enjoyment factor, instead they keep crappy Reality TV or Dance Shows, OMG I remember when TV was all about ‘US” not ratings !!!!!!!!;
come on, its a great show, there must be a season 2 3 4 5 6 too!! Can’t just cancel the thing in the middle of a plot!! South Africa loves this!!
Not that it is the same quality, but this is the same company that cancelled Arrested Development after only 3 seasons! From news coverage to corporate decisions, can always count on Fox to make bad choices. Next they will publicly endorse Donald Trump! Bunch of ass hats
Well, I guess I know the ending now. Thanks.
This was my favorite show up until the last episode. The bad guys win….thanks for watching! ?????? FOX cancels quality shows, but can’t get enough of sharks, tornadoes or both together!
here here Greg, it seems that quality shows don’t last very long and thinking back there have been far too many to mention over the years. The utter garbage always gets a 2nd and in some sad cases a 3rd chance though, surely people don’t actually watch this rubbish ? It seems that America is obsessed with ratings, perhaps to the extent that they don’t give a show a chance before pulling the plug ?
