Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.

Based on the books and the way the show ended they could have totally ran with it . Can’t believe it ! I actually started to have faith in m night shaymalan again.
EVERYONE LOVE’S WAYWARD PINES DON’T LET US DOWN………
LOVE this show i would definitely watch season 2
What!?!? The 2nd best show for Fox this summer & its canceled? I am not sure what these execs are thinking. Finally something new & different. Come on, Fox, listen to your viewers & renew this show.
I try to understand what makes network execs tick but they do not have their finger on our pulse. Wayward pines was entertaining which is more than I can say for most of the crap they keep. So tired of tasteless “fake”reality tv. I wonder if they know us out here at all, I don’t think si
Finally, something I really want to watch on FOX and they cancel it? Seriously????
Fed up of getting hooked into a TV programme to find that they yet again have cancelled it. Another good TV programme they have let slip through their fingers. Am very disappointed.
Wayward Pines was a refreshing Sci-Fi series in that it combined an inventive future world scenario with present day concerns over liberty and privacy. While the series is complete with episode 10, which I applaud the makers for achieving, I feel that there is much more to this world that could be explored. In particular I would like to have seen more of the struggle between the totalitarian regime of the new generation and peoples basic desire for freedom. Backstory about how humans devolved to the abbies and perhaps a jump forward another 1000 years for the remainder of those… Read more »
Love Wayward Pines. Extremely disappointed not to have a season 2 to look forward to watching. Too bad I don’t usually watch Fox but this show had me invested now guess I won’t be watching Fox again.
I can’t believe the show is being cancelled. Finally we have something interesting to watch with many twists and the powers that be are cancelling it. Fox is nortorious for starting a show and only running it for a short period. Not everyone wants to watch ridiculous cartoons or numb minding comedies.
I would have watched a second season of Wayward Pines, making sure my PVR is always set to record it. Too bad !
finaly something decent to watch and you cancel it.. screw you FOX
i think it’s a shame that there will not be a season 2. It was one of the few shows I watch on T.V. and it was the ONLY show I watch (ed) on FOX. I wish they would reconsider or at least bring on a show that is very similar to Wayward Pines (and more than 1 season).
It’s such a shame Wayward pines won’t be’ renewed ,i find it quite absurd ,this last ep is a real cliffhanger for a next season ,if they had already an idea to end it here why this finale ?i’m really really disappointed by fox ,i love Bones for example and i’m happy that they keep going in with 11 season but come on ,WP should have another chanche ;((
I would keep watching this show. I love it and I love Matt Dillion
Another interesting program down the drain! I too am so disappointed in so many programs I get hooked on being cancelled after a few episodes.
