Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.

FOX has a few good shows like Gotham, Master Chef and Hell’s Kitchen but most of their shows suck. I mean come on, who is watching Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader or Boom? Every once in a while FOX gets it right and comes up with a great show like Wayward Pines which has really high ratings and then they just cancel it! Whoever is making their programming decisions needs to be fired. I’m so tired of all of their boring, garbage game shows and lame romance comedies running endlessly and the good shows cancelled after one season.… Read more »
I don’t watch TV much at all. News & events are about it. I finally got interested in a few shows of which Wayward Pines is one. Including that one, 75% have been canceled. Why does all the good TV get cancelled?
I LOVED Wayward Pines!!! Just when I thought I’d found an innovative, unpredictable, thought provoking sci-fi TV show with great suspense, intrigue and monster designs, the executives of Fox network snatch this show off the network?!?! The cast was exceptional. I have always loved Matt Dillon and I was excited to see where he would take the viewers in this journey. To say that I’m disappointed is an understatement. If there was a way to bring the show back and simply tell me that tonight’s finale was just a teaser…someone’s horrible nightmare and that the second season’s first episode is… Read more »
M. Knight did a great job such a new, interesting and intriguing show, as with all his work. Too bad Fox cannot see it. Matt Dillon awesome as always. Maybe a cable network will pick up.
This is people no longer like Fox. They should give shows a chance like AMC. The walking dead and breaking bad took time to be the top shows on tv. The just want to jump to the next thing and the next thing instead of giving a good show a real chance.
Fox , this is one of those mistakes you shouldn’t make like you did telling George Lucas he can keep his Star Wars rights for a hefty pay cut! You don’t know what your throwing away here. Somehow make it so Matt dillin lives and you’ve got your tv show back . Like a previous comment, people are investing in Fox again cause of this tv show. My mother and I finally enjoyed a show to watch together and you now cut it off the air. I think it’s time to start making some administrative changes in those offices over… Read more »
Another great show let go. Wayward pines was a refreshing change from all the crap on TV lately. Every channel is consumed with stupid reality shows and game shows. Wayward pines should be brought back for another season. I would definitely watch.
My whole family loves this show. We make sure we watch ever week. We even record it so we cam watch it again. DON’T CANCEL!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the show, and Matt D. is awesome! Best new show this summer. I’m sick of reality TV… I say THUMBS UP for Wayward Pines!
Loved Wayward Pines! Finally something interesting to watch and they cancel it? Not watching FOX anymore! Shame on you! Bring it back….
Extremely disappointed. What in the world are the Fox execs thinking here? This was a quality show with an interesting angle.
I would watch a season two. I think this was a skillfully crafted adaptation of the book and I would hope for more stable ending. It is still hanging in certain areas.
I enjoyed every moment of season 1 and was looking forward to what was to come. I am very disappointed that Wayward Pines has been cancelled!!!
Love this show and its cast – season 2 please!!
No!! We love this show!! it’s been a long time since something this creative has been on..I’m hoping they reconsider!!
