Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.

Seriously, you cancelled Wayward Pines? We have so much time invested in Wayward Pines the series, the plot, the characters. With the exception of the Walking Dead, there wasn’t a lot out there that piqued our interest We actually love this show. I understand your Network does not count digital ratings. That really sucks because I have young grandchildren that I have get to bed during this hour. We can’t always start the show at 9:00 p.m.
I loved the series and. yES, I wears looking forward to another season. Super bummed that FOX would cancel a leading series!!
WE WANT SEASON 2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FOX GIVE US WHAT WE WANT. WE’LL REWARD YOU WITH LOYAL VIEWING.
This was a great show I really loved the show.I have so many question but I will never get them answered because there is no Season 2.Im very sad to see this show go.
WAYWARD PINES SEASON 2, PLEASE!!!!!
Being back wayward pines and put it before x-files then the ratings will be higher and we will all be 🙂
This was a very inventive show. Big mistake canceling it. It could go so much further. Plus it would be great to see how everything ended up the way it did. I really like this show and not happy they won’t be returning for another season.
Please bring this show back. This is a good show. I am so tired of reality shows.
Ditto, Carrie. Too many reality shows ( never watch ’em-think they’re crap);
WAY too few creative, NEW (not recycled) shows like Wayward Pines on Network,
which is why we all either watch cable or Netflix or Nothing?
Networks must be run by IDIOTS. What business model would cancel the #2 rated ANYTHING ?
Wayward pines best series EVER on TV….fox what are you doing?
I loved Wayward Pines!!!!..Bring it back please…It made me seek out the trilogy book based on the series…keep it coming
This show is awesome! There is no good reason to cancel it. Great acting, excellent story telling, and so much suspense! This is definitely a mistake and I’m so disappointed. Maybe Netflix or someone can pick it back up. Big mistake Fox!
I would most definetly watch…keep matt dillon alive…this show was awesome, a much needed break from reality tv and all the other garbage
We loved this show. Sad to see it go.
I think the execs need to know how absolutely fed up and pissed off people are getting with decent shows being cancelled way too soon. Of course Wayward Pines was different as we knew what we were getting into before it started but I think as the series progressed a lot of us secretly harbored hope that we might get a second season. It’s too bad they decided against it. As for all the other great shows that have gotten us hooked and have been cancelled way too soon…maybe it’s time to get some new Neilson families or whatever they… Read more »
I agree. Every time there is a good show, they get you hooked and then cancel the 2nd season. I will not watch a reality show. I do not pay all this money per month to watch other people’s crap on realities. I want to watch good suspense and dramas. I like Syfi like this one. Bring it back.
What an amazing series! Thank you M. Night Shyamalan for bringing to TV a quality sci-fi drama that could just as easily rub shoulders with the best of the big boys on the big screen! Whatta fantastic storyline! Excellent acting by all core characters. And a bucolic (seeming) setting so gorgeous it compelled me to explore film locations on Google Earth! But dag-gum it! No Season 2? Say it ain’t so! Whoever makes these corporate decisions fail to grasp the fact that most people are SICK and TIRED of stupid reality shows! We need Wayward Pines! I need to get… Read more »
Love, Love, this show! I hate I got hooked just for it to be cancelled. Just like that show with Lucas Black- called “American Gothic”.
Yes! American Gothic was great. Wayward Pines was excellent too.
Wish FOX would bring back Wayward Pines for second season.
